The Game Unfolds

803 Words
The faint hum of Victor’s helicopter faded into the distance, leaving the rooftop eerily silent. Damian stood with his gun still raised, his sharp gray eyes fixed on the spot where Victor had escaped. His jaw was clenched, and his breathing was steady, but Selene could feel the frustration radiating off him. “He wanted us to follow,” Damian muttered, lowering his gun. “He’s playing with us.” Selene took a step closer, her voice trembling. “So what now? We just let him go?” “No,” Damian said firmly, turning toward her. “We regroup. And then we take him down.” --- A Sudden Reunion As Damian and Selene made their way down the rooftop stairs, a shadow moved in the dim hallway ahead. Damian raised his gun instantly, his body coiled like a spring. “It’s me,” a familiar voice called out, rough but alive. “Elias?” Selene gasped as he stepped into the faint light. His face was pale, and he was clutching his side, but his smirk was intact. “You’re alive!” “Barely,” Elias said, his smirk fading as he leaned heavily against the wall. “Victor’s men hit harder than I expected, but I got out with this.” He held up a small device, the screen glowing faintly with a blinking dot. “It’s a tracker. Victor’s been leaving breadcrumbs, and this one leads straight to his next move.” Damian took the device, his expression hard. “He wants us to follow. He’s setting a trap.” Elias shrugged, his exhaustion clear. “Probably. But do we have a choice?” --- A Time to Plan Back at the boathouse, the trio gathered around the table. Elias spread out a map, marking a spot near the coastline. “This is where the tracker points. An old shipping yard. Victor’s likely using it as a staging area.” Selene leaned over the map, her brow furrowed. “If he’s expecting us, it’ll be heavily guarded.” “Exactly,” Damian said, his voice cold. “He’ll be prepared for an assault.” Elias raised an eyebrow. “So what’s the plan? Because a head-on attack sounds like suicide.” Damian leaned back, his gray eyes calculating. “We use his overconfidence against him. Victor thinks he knows our every move. We’ll make him think he’s right—until it’s too late.” Selene’s gaze sharpened. “What do you mean?” “We won’t just follow his breadcrumbs,” Damian said. “We’ll set our own trap.” --- A Quiet Resolve As the first light of dawn crept through the windows, Selene found herself standing on the dock, the cool breeze brushing against her face. Damian joined her, his presence grounding even in the growing tension. “You don’t have to come,” he said quietly, his eyes fixed on the horizon. Selene turned to him, her expression resolute. “I’m not staying behind.” “This won’t be easy,” Damian said, his voice soft but firm. “Victor isn’t just dangerous—he’s calculated. If we make one mistake—” “Then we don’t make mistakes,” Selene interrupted, her voice steady. “You don’t have to protect me, Damian. I’m in this just as much as you are.” Damian looked at her for a long moment, his gray eyes searching hers. Finally, he nodded. “All right. But if things go sideways, you stick to the plan. No improvising.” Selene smirked faintly, her tension easing for a moment. “Deal.” --- The Chase Begins Elias worked furiously inside the boathouse, his fingers flying across the keyboard as he tracked Victor’s movements. “The tracker’s holding steady. He’s at the shipping yard, but he’s not moving. Looks like he’s waiting.” Damian’s jaw tightened. “Good. Let him wait.” Selene stepped closer to the monitors, her chest tightening as she studied the feed. “What if it’s another decoy?” “It doesn’t matter,” Damian said. “We’ll find him. And when we do, we end this.” As the trio prepared to leave, the air in the boathouse felt heavy with anticipation. Damian checked his weapons one last time, his movements precise and practiced. Selene packed her bag, her resolve stronger than ever. Elias glanced at them, his smirk faint but genuine. “You two are either the bravest people I’ve ever met—or the craziest.” Damian’s gray eyes glinted with determination. “Maybe both.” As they stepped into the dawn, the first rays of sunlight casting long shadows across the ground, Selene felt a chill run down her spine. They were walking straight into Victor’s trap—but this time, they were ready.
