8Over the next few days, Andrew studied the books Sinclair fetched down from the top shelves. Combined with the papers, letters and diary extracts he already had, a picture was beginning to form. The more he read, the more fascinated he became but by the time he came to the final volume – a beast of a book, with a broken spine and dog-eared pages – his eyes ached and his head throbbed. All this changed when he carefully opened up the fragile volume. There, in the inside cover, was a handwritten letter, signed by Andrew's grandfather. For a moment he sat, staring in disbelief. Throughout all of his searching, he hadn't come across one piece of written evidence from his grandfather. Now he held in his hand an actual letter, a spidery scrawl recording feelings and thoughts.
