Chapter 2 Nessa’s POV I looked at my reflection in the mirror for the hundredth time. I wore the blue colored dress Damien once said I looked like a summer princess in. It wasn’t too expensive but it was my Favorite outfit because Damien liked it. My mind drifted to Damien. I was getting anxious trying to know what surprise he had for me this time. Before long the taxi stopped in front of Sterling Hotels. The Sterling Hotel was one of the most luxurious hotels belongs to Damien’s family and Damien was in charge of it. Expensive cars lined up outside. The crystal chandeliers made it look unique and romantic no wonder he chose for us to meet here. I couldn’t stop smiling. Despite everyone else forgetting my birthday, my parents didn’t forget Damien. He had a surprise waiting for me. I took a deep breath and I walked inside. The lobby buzzed with elegance as business owners discussed multi-million-dollar deals and signed contracts. Soft music played in the restaurant by a pianist. I looked around for Damien but there was no sign of him. My phone buzzed “Table 12.” The text read and I made my way towards the hotel’s exclusive private restaurant. The hostess walked to me politely. “Good evening ma’am, table 12 is waiting .” I thanked her before walking to the corner where table 12 is and my steps slowed. My smile froze when I spotted my worst nightmare Tessa who sat gracefully in the red dress she wore that perfectly suited her wavy hair, with a glass of red wine in her hands. “Tessa?” I called and she lifted her eyes from her phone, she smiled warmly, a smile I have never received from her. It felt strange because Tessa has never smiled at me for a very long time. “Happy birthday sister.” She said and I frowned “What are you doing here?” I asked but instead of a reply she pulled out the chair. “Sit.” I stood for a while wondering if she was the one who texted Damien or me, and I remembered the text didn’t mention Damien and he didn’t even have a reason to text with an unknown number. Maybe it was Tessa all along and I thought it was Damien. Something feels off. Before I could think any further. “Happy birthday sister,” Tessa said and I froze, I never in a million years would believe that Tessa actually remembers my birthday. “I know you don’t trust me, you don’t have a reason to trust me either. I have been horrible to you.” I blinked, Tessa looked almost regretful for the first time in years. “I’ve spent all my life competing with you, taking away Mom and Dad's love from you.” She looked down at her wine glass looking pitiful. “I’m tired.” She said and I didn’t know what to say because this is not the Tessa I knew. Tessa always sees me as a stain, someone unworthy of sharing the same womb with her. “I want tonight to be different, a new beginning for us. Give me the chance to treat you better, I’m tired of the constant argument. There are a lot of things I wish to talk about but I can’t talk to Mom about them because I feel embarrassed and most times I feel I should talk to you about them but we’re always distant. I want to make things right.” Tessa said and I was too shocked to react. She pushed a neatly wrapped gift across the table. “It’s for you.” She said and I stared at it and then back to her “You bought me…a gift?” She laughed softly “Happy birthday Nessa, I know it’s shocking. I slowly sat down, I looked at Tessa and the sadness in her eyes made my heart soften. Maybe people really do change. Tessa. And be bad after all. Within minutes, a waiter approached with different dishes all of the where my favorite. Seafood, steak, and dessert. Everything I loved. At home, they always prepared Tessa’s favorite dishes even when I was allergic to most of them I was still forced to eat them till I got used to them. “You remembered my favorite.” “Of course I know your favorite dishes, we’re twins remember.” Tessa smiled sweetly and surprisingly we both laughed. Halfway through the dinner, Tessa insisted we toast. She raised her glass as we toasted to new beginnings. Our glasses clicked and I took a sip. The wine tasted weird but I didn’t care because all I wanted was to enjoy the moment with my sister even if it was a dream I wanted it to last. We drank and soon we started talking about childhood memories, we talked about school and soon I found myself laughing for real. I looked at Tessa, maybe I had judged her harshly. Soon I got a call and I excused myself for a few minutes and then I came back. Took another glass of wine. Soon everywhere started becoming blurry, I blinked several times as the open space began to feel suffocating. “Tessa…” “Hmm?” “I just want to say thank you for today, I just…” I reached for a glass of water and my hands pushed the glass instead and it shattered on the floor… “Oops…I’m sorry…I just …I just feel …a little bit…dizzy.” “It’s alright,” Tessa said. “I’ll take you upstairs to your room.” Tessa’s voice was distant now. Maybe I shouldn’t have drunk too much. “I’m sorry.” “What are you apologizing for?” I managed to ask. “For being…difficult.” She smiled. “You’ve always been kind to me despite my rude attitudes towards you.” I could barely keep my eyes open. “We’re almost there," Tessa said. The electronic lock beeped and the door opened. The room was dark except for the bedside lamp that lit faintly. Tessa helped me lie on the bed. Within seconds I was already fast asleep Tessa’s POV I let out a sigh I was holding in. It was almost becoming so boring putting on an act and being in the same space with her. I was suffocating eating at the same table with Nessa. I quietly closed the door and took a look at Nessa who was unconscious now. I brushed a strand of hair on her face. “You’ve always been so easy to fool, just a few sweet words and you fell right as I thought.” “You really believed I wanted to be sisters with you…so dumb.” I quickly took Nessa’s phone, unlocked it with her face, and deleted the text I had sent her with my other phone and I made sure to erase any trace of my involvement. I left Nessa in the room immediately after I got a text from Damien. “Meet me at our usual spot, I’ll be waiting. Wear something sexy.” I smiled and texted him back “30 minutes.” Then I left. Tomorrow will be a huge turning point for Nessa. Nessa Whitlock’s life would be destroyed forever.
