The meeting took about two hours. They had a lot of information for me. I now had files on top of files on attorneys and police officers I needed to watch over. The two men had only completed half of both the office and the station, leaving me with the other half. The entire situation was overwhelming and a little scary. I couldn’t believe I had stayed after learning what the odds were for the job expectancy. Have I lost it?
I left the meeting unsure of my next move. This was much more than what I had planned for. I didn’t know I was signing up to be the clean-up crew of a flawed system. How could the people of Savannah allow their city to get so over-ran by monsters? Who would be willing to allow these men and women to take over their city and destroy a way of life?
Before I came to Savannah, I did some research on the town. From my understanding, Savannah had been a town in which families would come on vacation, to spend time with the past. Savannah was one of those towns that didn’t move into the future as quickly as the rest. People came to see a time long since past, but still have all the modern advantages; some would say, a modern ghost town.
However, since the insurgence of drugs and gang activity, the number of tourists had gone down, souvenir sales and hotel rentals had gone down, and crime rates had gone through the roof. The economy, in short, had gone to the dogs. This city needed a savior. I was supposed to be that savior. How am I supposed to do all this? I’m just one person. If an entire town can’t do it, what makes Robert and Seth so sure I can? How am I supposed to do this job without help from the outside? The city needed to become more involved in what happened around them. Fear is what kept them silent. That fear needed to be the first thing to disappear.
As I walked to my new office behind Robert, I thought of the one good thing that had come out of our little meeting, Andy had a job when he arrived. Robert had put me in touch with the commissioner, Captain Scott, and I told him my sad story. He said that Andy had a job when he got to Savannah. I was elated by that news. At least I had part of my job finished. It wouldn’t take long for Andy to infiltrate the station. He had been a Marine black ops officer before he worked for the Little Rock police department. There, he worked as an undercover officer. He knew how to make people trust him. He was much better at it than me. I knew it would take me weeks to infiltrate, if ever, and then they would figure it out before I had a chance to learn anything of value. Andy was most definitely a much better choice for undercover work.
Now, all I had to do was find someone else in the office I could trust; and according to Robert, that was easier said than done. I still had the suspicion that I could trust Gabriel. He still felt very safe to me.
