Chapter 14

Blake The look in Claire's eyes burned into my brain. No matter how fast I ran I could not escape her and the hurt I caused her. A crack of thunder sounded in the sky, and I knew that it was because of me. Claire and I could never happen. We are from two different worlds, different species. No one has ever bred with someone of the opposite species or lived long enough to try. The air turned frigid, and snow began to fall. Slowing my pace, I stopped in front of my grandparents' cabin. I held out my hand as a perfect snowflake landed in my palm. It was mid-October; snow shouldn't be falling yet. I smiled as I looked up, in amazement, into the whirlwind of white falling around me. Claire could control water too. No witch has ever had more than one affinity. That makes Claire all the more dangerous and a bigger target for rogue clans if they ever found out. "You should really fix this place up Blake." A female's voice called out in a low whisper from the barn. Walking up to the entrance, I slid open the double doors. It was pitch black inside, but movement sounded from the rafter. The scent of death hit my nose. "Mara," I called out. "What are you doing here?" Out of the corner of my eye a shadow emerged from above me. She's wearing a black cloak with the hood over her head. Slowly she walked along the edge whistling in tune with the wind. "I saw you in a vision," Mara spoke lowly. "There was a girl too." "What do you know about her?" "I know how you feel about her." Mara appeared at my side, whispering in my ear. I spun around, coming face to face with her. She grabbed the sides of my face and her bright purple eyes glowed as they locked onto mine. A faint, blurry picture appeared in my head. It showed Claire and I lying in bed together. Her head on my chest with my arms wrapped around her body. Suddenly the picture dissolved into blackness as I was pulled back into the barn. How I wished that could be reality. "Why are you showing me that?" I asked her as my fists clenched. She was toying with me, that's what the daughter of the fallen angel Ramiel does. "She is your future." Mara dropped her hands from my face and stepped back as a sly smile appeared on her face. I could tell she knew more than she was letting on. Mara and her twin were gifted with insight into the future, but unlike her twin sister, Mara saw the dark side. I shook my head as I started pacing, "No, she can't be. We can't be together." "You are wrong Blake. You two were always destined." Mara appeared in front of me, making me stop in my place. Her words were soft as she spoke, "You two are going to change the world. Stop fighting your true path." I searched her eyes for any sign of a lie, but her eyes were as dead as her soul. When I blinked, she had disappeared into the night. "f**k," I yelled into the cold air. Mara was never wrong about a vision. I don't know what I was more scared of. The fact that I messed things up with Claire and I'm not sure I can fix them now. Or that we are going to be going against the council's rules and might not be alive long enough for that vision to come true. Kicking the wall out of anger my foot went right through it. "s**t," I muttered. Pulling my foot out of the hole I made, I walked out of the barn. The snow had stopped falling but the air was still chilly. Looking up at the abandoned cabin an idea hit me. If we are going to break the rules, we will need a place to stay if we make it out alive.
