Narrators P.O.V 1999 “I’m turning fourteen next week!” Shay screamed from the passenger seat of her mother’s car. Tisha and Chrissy were sitting in the back seat. “Welcome to the club kid!” Tiana cheers. “It’s time to PARTY!!” Chrissy shouts. “Will you girls quit yelling?” Tisha flinched from their loudness. “Sorry Mommy.” “Tell Tina, I’ll be back to pick up the three of you by eight and I’ll call her if anything changes.” “Yes Ma’am” They all answer in unison. “Fingers crossed nothing will change.” Shay wished. “Fingers crossed.” Chrissy joins in. The girls got out of Shays’ Mothers car and met Tina on the porch. Chrissy told Tina what Tisha said and they made their way through the house to the backyard. The girls sat at the picnic table talking about their weekends while they waited for Samantha and Tiffany to get there. “I like it in Atlanta, I wish y’all could have come with me.” Shay explains to her friends. “Isn’t your dad mean.” Chrissy asks unsure. “No, he tries to be, but he’s not.” “What did you do?” Tiana asks. “We went to the pool and spent time with his girlfriend and her family.” “You like them?” Chrissy leans her head on her hands. “Because I sure don’t like my dad’s new girlfriend. She’s the definition of evil.” Tiana rolls her eyes dramatically. “I don’t not like her, but I don’t really care for her either. She was just there.” “Shay! You’re back from the country!” Sam took off running towards Shay and gave her a tight hug. After the girls talked a little more about their weekends, they started playing double dutch in the driveway. JJ and Sion made their way to the backyard along with their friend McGee to wrestle each other. Tiffany challenged Shay to a jumping competition, causing shay to take her glasses off, put her hair down out of the high bun she wore into a low ponytail. Tiffany had an advantage being that she wore jean shorts and Shay had on a jean skirt. Shay still jumped; she doesn’t turn down a challenge. “Candy Alert!” Samantha yelled but only loud enough for the girls to hear her. “Don’t Distract Me!” Tiffany yells in the middle of jumping. “Hadn’t he turned you down before?” Chrissy says apathetically. “That was a long time ago.” Samantha brushes her off. “Go get him.” Tiana challenges her, smirking. “No!” Tiffany tripped over her feet and messed up her progress. She was hoping to see Silas today but not for Sam to flirt with him. She stood up to dust herself off and quickly changed her mind about approaching him. Tiffany started stretching while Shay took her turn to jump. She’s hoping that Silas would notice her and approach her instead. The boys huddled up by the swing set in the back of the yard when Sin and Silas joined them. “Sin, that’s a new camera?” JJ asks checking it out. “Yeah, it has better focus and I can record all of you doing embarrassing shit.” Sin jokes. “You should make a Share Worlds channel.” Sion suggest. “For sure, I’m posting everything, and I’ll call it Unrated X.” “Who is that?” Silas asks as he sat his gym bag down on the bench of the picnic table while watching the girls jump rope. “Who are you looking at?” Sincere asks. “The one with the ponytail.” “There are two and aren’t you dating Emily?” JJ chimes in. “Yeah, what’s your point?” Silas looks at JJ with a careless expression. “His point is, why are you asking about another girl if you’re taken? Lover boy.” Sincere rephrased while recording Silas on his new camera. He turned and recorded the girls zooming in on the two individually with their hair tied. Then he put the camera back on Silas in time to catch him say ‘She’s fit,’ while checking out the girl. “Shay or Samantha?” Sion reads his expression. “Samantha the one with brown hair and I know Shay.” “Then you know that’s Shay in the jean skirt.” Sin informs. “Nah. The girl jumping rope right now ain’t Shay.” Silas says, doubting them. “Ninja, That’s Shay.” “Da*n.” Silas scans her over for a second. “You high?” Sion asks Checking Silas eyes. “Nah, she looks different.” Silas shrugs, looking away from her. “Nope, no she doesn't.” Sion insists. “Shay has always been a babe.” JJ stated before squirting some water into his mouth. Silas shook his head then proceeded to do some pull ups on the swing sets bars. “She does have more curves. No! off-limits babe.” Sion Jokes. “Not to Silas, especially not after they boned.” Sin instigates. “Don’t start with that shit.” Silas brush him off. “Oh, he's mad now. He wants what he can’t have.” Sion jokes. “Who can’t have?” Silas looks at him as if he was lying. “Yeah right, you two can’t have a conversation without fighting.” JJ chuckled, “And we would know if they fucked.” JJ, Sin and Sion didn’t know the details, but they knew something was up with them. “Hell yeah, I will be back. Don’t fight unless I’m here to record it.” Sincere pointed at them while backing away from them. JJ sat at the picnic table with the rest of the boys while Sincere made his way over to the girls. He hugged every one of them except for Samantha and Tiffany, Sin always said they were trouble. Chrissy went into the house and came back out with the CD player. Sincere sat on top of the empty picnic table that’s placed closer to them so he could get a clear view of the entire backyard on his camera. The girls started dancing and singing to the music in their own world; at least Shay and Tiana were. “Samantha?” Tiffany whispered. “What?” Sam saw how Tiffany’s attitude changed when the boys came around. “Is it just me or is he looking at Shay?” Tiffany nodded her head towards Silas. “He probably is, they’re friends.” Sam said casually. “Chrissy said they hooked up.” “I doubt it, but it probably was a bet or something if they did.” Sam knew Tiffany like the back of her hand, and she refuse to get worked up giving Tiff what she wants. Tiffany wanted Sam to cause a scene so she would look like the calm, mature one out of the two. “It was a dare.” Tiffany confessed. “My point, Shay is pathetic.” Sam cut her eyes at Shay. “Right, she’s not his type.” Tiffany giggles. “Mm, girl look at him work out!” Samantha sat up and clutched her chest acknowledging Silas. She studied him for a minute checking out his looks. “You’re thirsty.” Tiffany said then shook her head at her friend. “Who is that?” Sam asked as Emily came walking around the side of the house looking for Silas. Emily is a pretty petite blonde with brown streaks. She’s been Silas girlfriend for a week now. Silas stopped doing push-ups to meet her in the center of the backyard. Shay saw him hugging her, but she wasn’t staring at them like Sam and Tiff were. “Aren’t they just the cutest?” Tiana said in awe. “Not according to Sin.” Chrissy said being messy. “Chill, I ain’t say that.” Sin pushed her shoulder. “She cool people though.” JJ defended Emily. “Are you going to introduce us to your friend, Silas?” Tiana raised her voice to ensure they heard her. Shay attempted to hide her emotions and went to sit at the table so she wouldn’t have to talk to them. Silas walked over to them with Emily following behind him. She walked looking at her feet, displaying her nervousness. When they made it to them JJ and Sion sat in the grass beside them waiting to see what Samantha had to say. Chrissy sat at the table with Sin and Shay when Tiana walked up to Emily with a smile on her face. “Look up girl! We don’t bite.” Tiana reached out her hand to shake Emily’s. “Not all the time, anyway.” Chrissy teased causing Sin to laugh and Silas to look their way. “Ignore them.” Silas said not paying Shay any mind. “Any-who, Emily dear, I’m the cute brother, Sion.” Sion smiles. “Nice to meet you.” She said in a soft voice with a hint of a Texas accent. Sion kisses her hand and Emily gave a nervous smirk then leaned into Silas wrapping her arms around his arm. “That’s Tiffany, Tiana, and Chrissy.” Silas said. “Why are you holding on to him like that?” Sam asks rudely. “This is my girl, Emily.” Silas continued, ignoring Samantha in a whole. Tiffany put on one of the biggest, fakest smiles she could muster up and went on to shake Emily’s hand. Shay stood up and focused her attention back on the music while Tiana and Chrissy stopped Samantha from talking to Emily. Sincere stood on top of the picnic table with his camera, waiting for something good to happen. JJ and Sion started walking over to the swing set with McGee. “Silas, are they always at your house?” Emily asks with hesitation in her voice as they walk to the farthest picnic table. “Some of them.” “I don’t think they like me very much.” She rubbed her arm awkwardly. “They don’t know you.” Silas shrugged and sat at the picnic table gesturing for her to do the same. “Silas?” Sam walked up to Silas but not close enough to hear their conversation before she called his name. Once he turned his attention to her, she walked closer to him and whispered in his ear. Emily had no clue what she was saying but it made her uncomfortable. Silas nodded his head and Samantha walked away slowly with her hands in her pockets. She looked at Emily and let out a sly giggle before turning around and walking away, Switching harder than necessary. Shay sat at the other table watching everything unfold. Emily complaining to Silas in one corner and Samantha laughing with Tiffany in the other corner. Chrissy and Tiana were dancing and singing karaoke for Sincere to record them. “Shay come on and join us, we’ll let you be Kelly.” Tiana announced in excitement. “Fine, which one of you is Beyonce?” Shay asks as she stands up and stretches, preparing to join them and catching Emily’s eye. “You didn’t tell me their names.” Emily tells Silas. “Who?” “Those girls and the only other white person back here.” She pointed at them as she spoke. “Really?” “What? “That’s why you think they don’t like you?” Silas asked her with skepticism. “Maybe.” Emily shrugged. “It has nothing to do with the color of your skin. And I like you, it doesn’t matter what they think. Plus, they don’t know you to not like you.” Silas reassured her. “Okay, I’m overreacting. I’m sorry babe.” Emily pouted a little before taking a deep breath. “Yeah, yeah, come here.” Silas pulled her onto his lap into a hug. She stayed there and watched the girls sing and dance, from a distance. Samantha made eye contact with Silas when she saw Emily sitting on his lap. She gestured for him to come to her with a nod of the head. “What’s that about?” Emily asks after seeing Sam’s gesture. “She asked me to help her with something, nothing important.” Samantha originally asked Silas if she could work out with him later because she wanted to try out for the cheerleading team at her new school. He said yes but he wasn’t going to leave Emily to work out with her right now. Tiffany knew what Sam was trying to do and laughed at her obvious failure. Silas watched Samantha catch an attitude and wrapped his arms around Emily tighter pulling her closer to him. Sam went over to Shay, to try and get him away from Emily another way. Something about making Samantha mad was amusing to him. While Samantha was talking to Shay, she turned around and looked at Silas. It was the first time they’ve made eye contact since she got back in town. Silas loosened his grip on Emily then focused his attention elsewhere. “Who is she anyway?” Emily notices them looking at her and started feeling uneasy. “Who now?” “The girl we’ve been talking about. Are you okay babe?” She twisted in his lap to look at him. “Yeah, why?” He looks her in her eyes waiting. “You seem distracted.” “I’m not. That’s Samantha and the boy you asked about before is McGee.” He explained as Shay walked over to them. Silas watched her come towards them and sucked his teeth when he saw she had a bad attitude. Emily shifted on Silas lap, appearing to be uncomfortable. She had no idea what to expect and Shay was another girl Silas failed to introduce her to. Shay stopped in front of them and exhaled loudly before she spoke to them. “First things first, if you’re gonna date this knucklehead, you better stop acting scared. Or those girls are going to do whatever they can to make you feel like crap and think he’s cheating on you.” Shay say’s straight up. “Whoa” Emily leaned back a little repulsed. “And secondly, you’re an asshole for not standing up for her, Silas. Now you’re good friends with Sam all of a sudden?” All the annoyance Shay felt was evident when addressing Silas. “Go somewhere with your mess, she can handle herself and we ain’t thinking about your goofy friends.” Silas states, annoyed. “I don’t want to be dragged into your mess either, Okay?” Shay rolled her eyes. “Emily? Right?” Shay put on a calmer voice. “Yes?” Emily was hesitant. “I’m Shay, don’t say I didn’t warn you. Oh, and if you want to make friends, it’s best to go talk to them rather than sit on his lap all day.” Shay nodded in understanding causing Emily to mimic her.
