Shay
Shawn was working in his shed and Chrissy was sitting on the couch with me watching “Charlies Angels” for the one hundredth time. Sion and JJ were still upstairs playing the game in his room while Tina was in her room gossiping with my mom on the phone. Chrissy begged me to spend the night with her after her mom gave her permission to stay over. So, I showered and put on a spaghetti strap shirt I had over here and a pair of basketball shorts. While we were watching the movie Sincere came in and ran up the stairs. He looked like the happiest boy alive when he came back down and dropped onto the loveseat. Of course, Sincere had s*x with his girlfriend at the pool. Why would she agree to do it in a nasty public place? Thinking back to what McGee said earlier, it was probably her idea. The girls they date go crazy when it comes to them.
“Why are you so happy?” Chrissy looked at him with amusement and suspicion.
“Do you have to ask?” I turned my nose up.
“If she wants to know, she wants to know Shay. Ms. Chrissy I just had the best se- Oh, s**t!” Sin lost focus of what he was saying when Silas walked through the door. “You’re about to ask?”
“Yeah, what mood is she in?” Silas replied.
“I ain’t seen her yet, if she says yes, I got your back.” Silas nodded his head as he walked towards the stairs. At first, I was just as confused as Chrissy until Sin ran to the door and opened it, exposing Alicia, who was standing on the porch waiting on Silas to return. Tina came down to the bottom of the steps with Silas in toe. She approached the front door now with the girl and Silas both standing in front of her. This isn’t the first time she sent a girl home at the door; this should be funny. Tina's body blocked my view of the two of them, but I heard what said very clearly.
“You are to stay downstairs unless you're going to the bathroom. No room visits, no kissing, no feeling, and nothing you wouldn't want me to tell your father. Do you understand me?” Tina spoke with nothing but authority.
“Yes Ma’am.” The Alicia answered quickly.
“And don't get used to being here. Silas knows my rules about house guest. Don't make me have to put you out or band a pretty young lady like yourself.” Tina said before looking at Silas then back at Alicia.
“I won't.” Alicia confirmed.
“Why do you want to be here with this knucklehead anyway?”
“Silas is a gentleman who respects me and a really cool friend to have.” Alicia beams.
“The lies.” I roll my eyes.
“Hush girl. Y'all come inside and don't be too loud down here I’m reading.” Tina waves me off.
“Yes Ma’am.” Everyone replies together. I felt Alicia's eyes on me as she walked over to the couch to sit down. When I finally looked at her, she was now giving Chrissy the evil look. Silas got comfortable and turned the lights off leaving only the blue hue from the tv light. He sat down in between Chrissy; whose legs were up under her butt as she leaned on the arm of the couch; and Alicia. Once he got comfortable, she turned towards him, opened her jacket, and rested her legs across his lap. Once she got in place, she turned his face to hers and kissed his lips. I adjusted myself in Tina’s recliner and focused my attention on the television. Chrissy didn’t move but she stared at the TV as well. It seemed neither her nor Sincere cared about what Silas and his angry guest were doing.
“I’m going to get that “warriors” movie from Sion.” Chrissy said.
“Okay, they’ve been talking about it ever since they saw it last week.” I reply.
“Hurry up short stock, I like some Natalie, but I could live without watching that movie again.” Sin complains.
“Now she’s your type?” Chrissy doubts.
“I like what I like.” Sincere winked at her. Chrissy shook her head with reddened cheeks as she went upstairs to get the next movie for us to watch. Now that I think about it, Chrissy kind of resembles the girl who plays ‘Natalie’ in the movie, with wild curls.
“Why are you here? Dressed like that?” Alicia questioned me as if she was the lady of the house.
“Excuse me?” I look at her calmly despite her tone.
“I knew it.” Sin smacked his thigh and chuckled.
“Don’t start,” Silas threw his head back in annoyance. Chrissy coming down the stairs, stopped on the last step with the movie in her hand and Sion behind her. JJ pushed by them and stood in the middle of the floor facing us all.
“What did I miss?” JJ asked from the middle of the floor.
“Nothing, put the movie in.” Silas told him.
“Answer my question. Chrissy is here as well and they’re both underdressed.” Alicia says more sharply.
“They're obviously spending the night.” Sion said expecting her to use her common sense.
“Okay, let’s go upstairs and play the game Shay. We can watch the movie later or tomorrow.” Chrissy suggests.
“Y’all so sweet, giving your boy some privacy. Let's play Uno in my room, I feel like winning.” Sincere rubs his hands together.
“They're spending the night and can go in your bedrooms. But I have to stay here unless I go to the bathroom? What type of f****d up game is that?” Alicia grits angrily.
“We all grew up together, those girls are like sisters.” Sin sighs.
“But they are not your sisters. I should be treated better than them. I’m your b*tch, not this silly h*e.”
“Alicia. Do you want to test me?” Silas asks in a hypnotic deep tone. The room fell silent waiting for Alicia to say something. Sion took the movie out of Chrissy's hand and set it up on the tv for us to watch. I stayed silent because I told myself I wouldn't entertain Alicia's crazy attitude. And I’ve never heard Silas use that tone before. Chrissy grabbed a couple of blankets, handing me one and covering herself with one as she sat on the loveseat next to Sincere. Silas Slid over to the end of the couch closer to me, where Chrissy sat before. Alicia did the same thing and removed her jacket then she spread it across her and Silas arms. JJ and Sion plopped down on the couch beside them with Sion in the middle. Once the movie begins, I still can feel her evil eyes on the side of my face. I bit down on the inside of my bottom lip watching the clock on the wall above the tv. I knew eventually she would try to go all the way with him, and I wanted them to hurry up so she could stop hating me. And part of me wants Tina to come down and tell her it's time for her to go.
“Mm… Hehe, not here.” I didn't look but I heard the nasty sound of her moans. She giggled and denied him a few times but didn't sound like she meant a word of it. I saw their reflection in the tv whenever it went dark and could tell they were making out. Sincere stood up when he heard movement in the kitchen and paused the movie. Silas joined him to get a blanket out of the closet while sincere went to see what their father was doing. They came back at the same time. I assumed Shawn wasn't coming since all Sincere did was turn the tv up before continuing the movie. Silas sat down next to Alicia and covered both of them with a blanket. For some reason I got really hot and dehydrated. I put the blanket I had on the arm of the chair and went to get a bottle of water.
“Hey Shay, I didn’t know you were here,” Shawn smiled at me while collecting his tools. “Are you okay?” He studied my face.
“Yeah, just a little thirsty.” I force a smile before he smiles and leaves, returning to his shed.
“Is this based on a true story?” Chrissy asked?
“Why? Are you scared?” Sin pestered her.
“Slow,” Alicia loudly whispers. Listening to Chrissy and Sincere go back and forth about the movie was funny until I heard Alicia’s voice. I'm not exactly sure if they are doing it or just messing around. I can hear her heavy breathing mixed in with JJ’s laughing. I feel lightheaded standing here in the kitchen and a little nauseous. I'm not sure what's going on but I'm not going to stand here and let it get worse. walking to the back door with my eyes set on the doorknob, I hear her again. I look back and my eyes landed on Silas and Alicia whose eyes were closed while his face was somewhat covered by the blanket as he kissed her neck. I turned away immediately knowing what’s wrong as my eyes start burning with tears.
“Shay?” Chrissy called my name with concern. Knowing everyone's attention would be on me only makes me uncomfortable. I closed the door behind me and sat on the steps. My first thought was to breath deep. Instead, I'm sitting here squeezing my eyes shut. I refuse to cry or feel the way I'm feeling. I don't even know why I'm jealous when it's not the first time I've seen him with another girl. It’s been almost a year since anything happened between us, and I still have to remind myself. Silas is not my boyfriend; he never was and never will be. I took a deep breath and settled down a bit. The door creaked as it opened behind me. I got up off the step and turned to go inside before they all came out being nosy. “Girl, you scared me. What's going on?” Chrissy stood at the door.
“It's nothing let's go inside.” As we entered the living room, everyone had their eyes on me. Silas looked at me but then looked down at Alicia's legs that were still across his lap under the cover. Now I had the urge to laugh. I could have been overwhelmed because of my assumptions of what they were doing. Nonetheless I still will take that as a sign to get away from the Hendrix boys for a while. After tonight I'm not letting Chrissy talk me into another sleepover for a long time. At least not until I get my feelings in check.
“Shay, what's up?” JJ raised his brows at me waiting for an explanation. Alicia sat with a crooked smile on her face the whole time. Her attention stayed on Silas and that made me feel a bit of relief. I didn't want her killing me with her looks anymore.
“Nothing let’s finish the movie.” I smile and lift my blanket to sit down. Before I do, Alicia moves her leg making their blanket fall flat, on top of Silas standing erection. I quickly look away when I see her hand moving under the blanket and grabbing him. This time instead of sitting in my seat I started up the stairs. I heard Chrissy behind me and stopped mid step. I faced her to ease her mind.
“I'm okay Chrissy I promise. I'm just going to the bathroom.”
“Are you serious? I know you saw that print, he’s huge!”
“Chrissy please!” I shriek in a whisper. “I need to lay down.” I confess.
“Okay I’m sorry, go lay down.” Chrissy calms herself down. I could only imagine how we’d react if the blanket wasn’t covering it.
“Go finish the movie, I'm good.” With that Chrissy went back down the stairs. I stood there a minute listening to Sin’s questions.
“Don't hold out either.” He warned.
“Good Grief! She was overwhelmed, stepped outside to get some air after she drank some water but none of that worked.”
“So, she turned in for the night?” Sin asked her.
“Overwhelmed by what?” Silas commanding voice gave me chills. Chrissy didn’t answer so I can only imagine she shrugged.
“She is in Sins room ain't she? Cause I locked my door. I knew one of you was gonna try to take my bed.” Sion clarified quickly.
“I'm sleeping with her before she kicks me out of my bed, we share around here.” Sin said truthfully.
“She's not in your room Sin, I don't think she wants the headache after hearing you snore.” Chrissy rolled her eyes.
“Whatever hater, Shay doesn’t complain like you.”
“Play the movie.” JJ cut in.
“Your mom lets her lay in her bed?” Alicia asks Silas.
“Mm hmm.” He hums.
“Mama said don't interrupt her. Shay is tired not stupid.” Sion snorts.
“If she's not in his or her room she's in yours.” Alicia responds.
“I said I…” Sion starts.
“Leave it alone.” Silas spoke, cutting Sion off.
“OMG!” Alicia shouts. “She’s in your room!”
“Dumbass.” Sion mumbles.
“Oh boy…” Sincere groaned.
“That b*tch sleeps in your bed?”
“She's going to sleep down here when everyone leaves.” Chrissy simplifies.
“Don't lie to me you sneaky h*e.” Alicia narrows her eyes.
“You're the only h*e here.” Chrissy snapped, I figured it's time I intervened and get Chrissy upstairs before Tina hears them. I went down the stairs without saying a word and grabbed a hold of Chrissy's arm before pulling her towards the stairs. Sincere stood up when he saw me, most likely assuming I'd fight the girl but not now.
“He doesn’t want you.” Alicia spat at me.
“Alicia.” Silas said her name as a warning, and she shuts up.
“Let’s go Chrissy.” I said calmly while pulling Chrissy up.
“Go where?” Alicia questioned, but I didn’t bother answering her.
“Kitchen.” Silas says while standing up. Alicia followed him into the kitchen while I walked away, and Chrissy followed. We went up into Silas room were we planned on staying until she left.
“You did good not letting her get to you.” Chrissy said while we laid in bed staring at the ceiling.
“She hasn’t said anything we haven’t heard before.” I reply before sleep consumes me. Light taps on my shoulder woke me from my sleep. I scan the dark room trying to place myself. Seeing the neighbor’s backyard through the dark window let me know I was lying in Silas bed. Three more taps on my shoulder and I rolled over to see who it was. Silas sat on the edge of his bed looking down at me. I looked around the room one more time because I remember Chrissy was in here with me.
“She’s in Sincere’s room. The living room heater went out again.” He informed.
“What time is it?”
“A little after midnight.”
“Well, I have more than enough blankets since she's not sleeping downstairs with me.” I cover my yawn when I finish talking.
“You ain't gotta go downstairs, just move over.”
“I don't want to sleep next to you after what you did today.”
“What did I do?” He asks as if we weren’t in the same room earlier.
“I heard her moaning.”
“That’s why you caused a scene?”
“I didn’t cause a scene I left the room, that’s all.” Any other time no one would care if I walked out of the room. Everyone was on edge because she was here.
“Am I not supposed to please my girlfriend?” His words cut me.
“I don’t want to be in the room while you or anyone has s*x.”
“Oh, my... wow.” It’s dark but I could see him shaking his head. What did I say that was wrong?
“Excuse me.” I sat up and attempted to pull the cover off of me so I could get out of his bed. Silas lightly pushes me back down and gets under the cover himself.
“Lay down, you're overreacting.”
“Silas, you can't force me to sleep here.”
“I told you it's cold and I'm not letting you back in after you go find out for yourself.”
“Why do you care if I'm cold or not?”
“Now I'm not supposed to care about you? Yo, what's up with you?” My feelings were hurt, but I couldn't tell him that. I'm not going to want to answer any of his questions, so I turned towards the window and laid down with my back to him. He sucked his teeth and did the same. With his back to me I could tell he was annoyed. I turned to look at him for a second then looked away. After a few minutes he turned around and looked at me. “Why do you do s**t to make her mad?” He scanned my face.
“What are you talking about? If I breathe that girl will get mad.”
“It's not just her.” He sighs as if he really doesn’t know why.
“What are you saying?” Is he really blaming me for the problem he has in his relationships?
“Every girl I bring around doesn't like you. When it comes to my relationships, you're the common problem.”
“I'm the problem?”
“Look them knowing you hang out here is cool but seeing you in the house makes them fuss at me. Then they cry when they find out you not only spend the night, but you sometimes sleep in my bed.” I felt a lump in my throat listening to Silas explain how I was a problem for him. My presence wasn't wanted by him, and I couldn't help but feel like his brothers felt the same way. When I would spend the night, I’d sleep in all of their rooms, not just Silas. All of them had girlfriends that weren’t fond of my presence. My eyes burned as I fought back tears yet again tonight. I looked down at my hands replaying what he was telling me. Then I felt anger, how dare he put the blame on me?
“Silas, things didn’t work out the way you and Alicia planned because of you and Alicia, not me.”
“What things? You really think you letting it be known you’re gonna stay in my room didn’t affect her?”
“I didn’t announce where I was going. And I know you bought her back here to take her virginity. Now you’re mad at me because you couldn’t do it.”
“Everything you did was a f*****g announcement! Who said I didn’t bone her? Who said she was a virgin? Why does any of this s**t matter to you?”
“Why did you come in here to yell at me about her?” I whisper.
“I didn’t. Some things are better left unsaid. They don't need to know you stay here or where you sleep. You don’t want the drama and neither do I.” I nodded my head in agreement with him and turned back to the window before laying down again. My brain started spinning, my body was hot, and I was struggling with all my might trying not to cry. I sat up again and looked down at him. I didn’t ask to be put in his mess and he’s not gonna have me end my night feeling like s**t by myself.
“I never told any of your girlfriends anything about me staying over or about where I sleep. I didn't plan on coming back for a sleepover.” Silas sat up and looked at me dead on. His facial expression was stoic.
“Yet here you are, in my bed. When my girlfriend whom I just walked home is pissed off at me, sleeping alone in her bed.”
“You left her alone, not me. And you’re the one who stopped me from getting out of your bed when I tried to leave. But since I am the problem, you don’t have to worry about any of that anymore, I’ll solve it.”
“Right, of course you will.” I know its cold downstairs so despite how I’m feeling right now, I’m not gonna leave the room. But I did take a pillow and another blanket and lay on the floor. He didn’t care about that though. Who would have thought my first day seeing him would end in a huge argument? “Get off the da*n floor.” He curses.
“Leave me alone.” I say sternly. Silas jumps up faster than expected and pulls me to my feet. I shake his hands off of me and move to lay back down.
“Get. In. The. Bed.” He growls lowly at me. My heart feels like it’s being chocked as I stop in place. I look at the bed with a strong urge to listen to him, pissed my lady parts are tingling. Silas grabs my arm gently and a gave me goosebumps.
“No.” I snatched away from him and stormed out his room before he could stop me. I collected all the blankets available and got comfortable on the couch. After about an hour, I woke up again, back in Silas room with his arm wrapped around me as if that argument never happened. “Silas?”
“No.” He doesn’t open his eyes; he just tightens his hold on me.
“Tomorrow I won’t be anyone's problem.” I confirm, knowing for a fact we did argue.
“Mm Hmm.” He hums in his sleep. He can do whatever he wants whenever he wants wherever he wants with Alicia. I’ll be out of sight, out of mind.
