Aria stood frozen on the rooftop, her heart pounding against her chest. Ethan had walked away before she could explain, and Ryan's unexpected return had stirred emotions she had fought hard to bury. The wind brushed against her face, but it did little to calm the storm inside her.
Ryan broke the silence.
"He's important to you, isn't he?"
Aria sighed deeply.
"I don't know what he is to me."
Ryan nodded slowly, as though he had expected that answer.
"I wasn't lying when I said I never stopped loving you."
She turned to him, her eyes filled with disappointment.
"Love isn't just about saying the words, Ryan. It's about staying when things get hard."
He looked away.
"I know."
"Then why did you leave?"
For a long moment, Ryan remained silent. Finally, he took a deep breath.
"My father owned the company I worked for. Three years ago, it was on the verge of bankruptcy. We owed millions, and investors were pulling out. The only way to save it was through a merger."
Aria frowned.
"What does that have to do with us?"
"My father arranged an engagement between me and the daughter of another company's CEO. It wasn't about love—it was business."
Aria stared at him in disbelief.
"And you agreed?"
"I didn't have a choice."
"You always have a choice."
Ryan's voice cracked.
"If I had refused, over five hundred employees would have lost their jobs, including people who had worked for my family for decades. I thought I was doing the right thing."
"And what about me?"
He lowered his head.
"I thought letting you hate me would hurt less than asking you to wait for someone who didn't know if he'd ever come back."
Tears filled Aria's eyes, but she refused to let them fall.
"You should have trusted me with the truth."
"I know."
She shook her head.
"It's too late."
Without another word, she walked away.
Meanwhile, Ethan sat alone in his office, staring at the city skyline through the large windows. The file on his desk remained unopened.
He couldn't stop thinking about what he had seen on the rooftop.
He barely knew Aria, yet seeing another man standing so close to her had unsettled him more than he wanted to admit.
A knock interrupted his thoughts.
"Come in."
His assistant entered.
"Mr. Blake, your mother is asking for you."
Within minutes, Ethan was back at the hospital.
His mother smiled weakly as he entered the room.
"You look tired," she said softly.
"I've just been busy."
She reached for his hand.
"You've been carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders."
He forced a smile.
"I'm managing."
She studied his face for a moment.
"There's someone, isn't there?"
Ethan laughed quietly.
"It's nothing."
"A mother's heart always knows."
He looked down, unsure of what to say.
"I've met someone," he admitted. "She's kind... stronger than she realizes."
His mother smiled warmly.
"Then don't let fear keep you from happiness."
Before Ethan could respond, the heart monitor beside the bed let out a sharp, unfamiliar beep.
Doctors and nurses rushed into the room.
"Sir, please step outside."
Ethan stood frozen as the medical team surrounded his mother.
The door closed in front of him.
For the longest five minutes of his life, all he could do was pray.
Finally, the doctor stepped out.
"We've stabilized her," he said. "But she can't wait much longer. The surgery must happen within the week."
Ethan nodded silently, relief mixing with fear.
As he left the hospital later that night, he looked up at the stars hidden behind the city lights.
He had promised himself he would never let his personal life distract him from protecting the people he loved.
But now, two people occupied his thoughts.
His mother...
And Aria.
Neither of them knew that Ryan's return was only the beginning.
Someone else had been watching from the shadows.
Someone who had a reason to destroy both Ethan's company and Aria's life.
And their first move was already in motion.
