Chapter 2: A Second Encounter

592 Words
Aria barely thought about the stranger she had helped in the rain the next morning. Life had a way of pushing personal moments aside, replacing them with deadlines, meetings, and endless emails. By eight-thirty, she was already seated in the conference room at Morrison & Hart, reviewing a presentation for one of the firm's biggest clients. "Morning, everyone," her manager, Daniel, announced as he walked in. "We have exciting news. We've secured a new account, and this project could be the biggest of the year. I expect nothing less than your best." The room buzzed with excitement. Daniel continued, "Our client will be arriving in ten minutes." Aria adjusted her notes, determined to make a strong impression. She had spent years earning her reputation, and she wasn't about to let nerves get in the way. A few moments later, the conference room door opened. Her heart skipped a beat. Walking beside Daniel was the same man she had met in the rain. Ethan Blake. Their eyes met instantly. For a second, surprise flashed across Ethan's face before a familiar smile appeared. "I believe you've already met our new client," Daniel said with a grin. The room fell silent as everyone looked between them. "We've... met once," Ethan replied politely. Aria nodded, trying to hide her surprise. "Very briefly." The meeting began, but concentrating became nearly impossible. Ethan spoke confidently about his company's vision, explaining how they wanted to rebrand before launching a new product nationwide. His calm voice and thoughtful ideas immediately earned everyone's attention. As Aria listened, she realized he wasn't just charming—he was intelligent. Every suggestion he made was backed by careful planning, and he welcomed feedback instead of dismissing it. When it was finally Aria's turn to present, she took a deep breath. She walked through her proposal with confidence, outlining creative strategies and digital campaigns that could help Ethan's company reach a wider audience. When she finished, the room was quiet. Then Ethan smiled. "I like it," he said. "Actually... I like it a lot." Relief washed over her. Daniel clapped his hands together. "Excellent. Then it's settled. Aria will lead this project." The meeting ended with handshakes and congratulations. As everyone filed out, Ethan approached her. "I guess fate likes repeating itself," he said with a chuckle. Aria laughed softly. "It seems so." "I still owe you for helping me yesterday." "You don't owe me anything." "I disagree." Before she could protest, Ethan reached into his pocket and handed her a simple business card. "Coffee after work?" he asked. "As a thank-you. Nothing more." Aria hesitated. For three years, she had kept everyone at a distance. Accepting an invitation from a man she barely knew felt dangerous—not because she feared him, but because she feared herself. She had promised never to let anyone get close enough to hurt her again. Seeing the uncertainty in her eyes, Ethan smiled gently. "No pressure. If you say no, we'll just pretend I never asked." She looked at the card in her hand. For reasons she couldn't explain, saying no felt harder than it should have. "...One coffee," she finally said. Ethan's smile widened. "One coffee." As he walked away, Aria stared at the business card. It was such a small thing, yet it felt like the beginning of something much bigger. Outside the office window, the rain had finally stopped. Sunlight broke through the clouds, casting a warm glow over the city. For the first time in years, Aria felt something she had almost forgotten. Hope.
