Chapter 5

926 Words
This cannot be happening, this cannot be f*****g happening. And absolutely not at a time like this! Why? Why does this have to happen to me?! I scream into my palm as I smack my staring wheel multiple times. “Arghhh!!!” He’s beautiful, his brown eyes pull us in. He’s not so bad…. I shut Kilos up immediately. Of course she was going to crumble down the moment she sees a man. I start the engine. Go back. Kilos paces inside me, claws scraping. Turn around now! “No.” I mutter under my breath still gripping the staring wheel. I shift into gear. I’m about to drive out of this wretched place and forget about the stupid deal I was to broker with the prime minister when he steps into the headlights. I immediately slam the breaks. The car jolts to a stop inches from him. He doesn’t even flinch, he just stands there, hands at his sides, those stupid brown eyes fixed on me like he’s afraid I’ll disappear if he blinks. Mate kilos snarls, pleased. Our mate. Over my dead body! “Move,” I snap my fingers through the glass, demonstrating for him to get out of my way. Instead of stepping aside he leans down, palms on the hood of my car. His scent invades my nostrils and kilos sigh in pleasure. “I don’t know what your problem is,” he says, breath fogging the windshield, “but can you at least let me dry clean your suit.” I don’t know what makes me angry the most, the fact he thinks he can just ‘dry clean’ this massive coffee stain off my Kiton suit or the fact that he’s too stump to realize what him coming into my life means. “Get out,” I reeve the engine, “…of my way.” “I don’t need your f*****g apology, just get out of my way!” He still doesn’t move. I laugh, “Alright then.” I ease my foot off the break just enough for the car to creep forward. But he still doesn’t step back. He just continues to stare at me with this kind of quiet confidence, like he knows I won’t run him over and throw his body into a lake. And for the first time in my life, I hesitated. I actually hesitated. Damn him. Damn my wolf. And damn the fact that I don’t drive away and cripple him in the process. I exhale twice. One long and one short. I get down from the car and make my way to where he’s standing. “You do realize you just ruined my meeting with that disgusting fool of a prime minister right? Costing me millions?” I stalk closer toward him and he finally moves back. But I wasn’t done. “And you do realize that this bloody coffee stain is not leaving this suit…” “But–“ he tries to cut in but I stop him. “But nothing! And no, please I don’t need your stupid help. Now get the f**k out of my way before I run you over.” “Have I seen you before?” He asks out of the blue. I turn to look at him with raised eyebrows. “Of course you’ve seen me before, I’m Caroline Stone, I’m on your television screen everyday.” “No, I know who you are, it’s just….you seem very familiar, like I know you personally.” His eyes narrow. Kilos purrs. I’m scared that if he comes any closer to me, kilo would pounce on him, so I take a couple steps back. “Take a step back please.” Nigel, my head of security appears in front of me, blocking the restaurant owner from looking at me. “I’m sorry…I didn’t mean to cause trouble, I just—“ Nigel takes a step forward. Now, Nigel is big, he towers over me, and I’m 6’1. So I’m not surprised when he towered over the restaurant owner like he was a little kid. “You're still trying to explain yourself, and that is asking for trouble, leave. Now.” Nigel wasn’t trying to be nice anymore. He’s my beta. Strong, intelligent, loyal. He had always been by my side since we were in Lunaris, so I wasn’t surprised when he said he wanted to work for me. I’m honestly grateful for him, even though I don’t tell him. He works for me, there wasn’t any need for loud appreciation, that’s what the money does. The inept fool of a restaurant owner tried to get a glimpse of me but Nigel didn’t let him. Eventually he gave up and stepped out of the way. I don’t look up as I hastily make my way to my car. He’s still standing by the side of the road like a confused lost puppy. I hated it. As my car engine roars to life, a cruel realization hits me. This isn’t a complication. This isn’t even an inconvenience. It is a catastrophe. A punishment the moon goddess had finally decided to dump on me for all her people I’ve slaughtered. To define how much of a punishment it is, she didn’t just give me a mate. No. She gave me a human one. As I drive away, the inept fool’s reflection shrinking in my side mirrors a voice that isn’t kilo’s murmurs inside me—soft but terrifying—that this time, running will only make it worse.
