THE MAID WITH GOLDEN EYES

1149 Words
The Azure Imperial Palace was a gilded cage. Beautiful on the outside. Rotten on the inside. Aurelia walked through its servant gates three days after she rose from the Abyss. Her name was now Lian. Her face was hidden behind a plain servant’s mask. Her golden eyes were dulled with a paste of herbs that smelled of bitter root and ash. The paste itched. It burned. It was necessary. No one looked twice at a maid. That was her weapon. Invisibility was stronger than any sword. A queen could be killed. A maid was forgotten. She was assigned to the East Wing. The most filthy, most dangerous part of the palace. Where broken servants were thrown to die without a name. The air was thick with rot and fear. The walls were stained with things she did not want to name. Perfect. The Abyss had taught her to hunt in the dark. And this was darker than any cavern. On her first night, she learned the rules. Kneel. Do not speak. Do not look at nobles. Your life was worth less than a teacup. Less than a grain of rice. And never, ever, spill a drop of wine on a eunuch. “New blood,” a voice sneered. Eunuch Han. Fat. Corrupt. His fingers were stained with ink and stolen gold. He was in charge of the maids. The man who sold them to nobles for coin. The man who broke them before they were sold. He grabbed Lian’s wrist. Hard. His nails dug into her skin and left red crescents. The pain was nothing. She had died. This was less than a pinprick. “Pretty hands for a sewer rat,” he hissed. His breath stank of wine. Sour. Rotten. “You will serve me tonight. On your knees.” The other maids looked away. This was normal. This was survival. To scream was to die. To fight was to vanish. Aurelia did not look away. Her dulled eyes lifted. And for a second, the herb paste cracked at the corner. A sliver of molten gold showed through, like fire behind water. Like a dragon opening one eye. Eunuch Han froze. “What… what are your eyes…” He never finished. Lian’s hand shot up. Her fingers, thin but forged by Dragon Blood, locked around his wrist like iron. Like a vice. Snap. The sound was clean. Wet. His wrist broke backwards at a wrong angle. Bone cracked. Eunuch Han’s scream tore through the East Wing. It bounced off the stone walls. It woke rats. He collapsed, clutching his shattered arm, blood pouring from his mouth as he bit his tongue. Silence. Every maid in the room stared. Horrified. Frozen. Some covered their mouths. Some started to cry. None of them had ever seen a servant fight back. Lian stood over him. She did not tremble. She did not beg for mercy. She looked down at him the way a dragon looked at a rat that dared bite. “I am not here to be used,” she said. Her voice was low. Cold. Not Lian’s. Aurelia’s. The voice from the Abyss. “Touch me again, and I will take your tongue next.” She stepped over his bleeding body and walked out. Her steps made no sound. The stone did not remember her weight. By morning, the story had spread like plague. The new maid broke Eunuch Han’s hand with her bare fingers. No magic. No weapon. Just strength. _________ Head Steward Mei summoned her. “Do you know what you’ve done?” Mei snapped. Her eyes were sharp. Old. She had seen a hundred maids disappear. “Eunuch Han is cousin to a Minister. You could be flayed for this. Skinned alive.” Lian knelt. Her eyes down. The gold hidden again behind dull brown. “He broke the rule first, Steward. No one touches the Emperor’s property.” It was a gamble. The law was a blade, and she was using it. Vales did not kneel. But they knew when to bend. Mei studied her. Most maids would cry. Most would beg. This one was still. Deadly still. Like a dagger waiting to be drawn. Like a storm that had not yet broken. “…You’re either stupid, or dangerous,” Mei said finally. She leaned forward. “The Prince needs a new personal maid. One with no fear. One who does not flinch. You start tonight.” Lian’s heart did not race. It went cold. Ice over molten gold. Caelan. So soon. The Abyss had been generous. _________ That night, she entered his chambers. The Crown Prince of Azure sat by a window. He looked tired. Older than she remembered. His dark hair was tied back. No crown. No Lysandra. Just a man with shadows under his eyes. Shadows she had put there. He did not look up when she entered. “Name?” he asked. His voice was flat. Bored. The voice of a man who had killed and forgotten. “Lian, Your Highness.” He lifted his head. His gray eyes met hers. For a heartbeat, nothing. He did not recognize her. The herbs worked. The mask worked. She looked like a stranger. A plain, dangerous stranger. Not a dead princess. Not the woman in the red gown. “Pour the tea,” he ordered. Her hands were steady as she moved. But inside, golden blood roared against her ribs. It remembered him. It wanted out. This is the man who stabbed me. This is the man who laughed as I fell. This is the man who will kneel. She set the cup down. Her sleeve slipped half an inch. A single line of gold flashed on her wrist before she could stop it. Ancient. Inhuman. It glowed like a brand. Caelan’s eyes narrowed. “What was that?” Lian pulled her sleeve down fast. She knelt, head to the floor. Forehead to cold stone. “A birthmark, Your Highness. Forgive me. It is ugly.” Silence. Heavy. Like a blade over her neck. She could feel him watching. Weighing. Remembering. He had stared at that same mark once. On her wedding night. Before the dagger. Then, “Leave.” She rose and backed out. Her back was straight. She did not bow her head until the door closed. Only then did she breathe. Outside his door, she breathed. Once. Twice. The gold in her blood was screaming. Phase one: Complete. She was inside the cage. With the wolf. And the wolf had no idea the dragon was already in his bedchamber. Watching. Counting his breaths. Learning his sins. _________ Far below, in the dungeons, Eunuch Han wailed. His career was over. His fingers would never hold gold again. In the palace above, an Empress began her hunt. And the palace did not know it yet. But the walls did. The stone remembered.
