"You had better get started. You have 5 minutes."
The chief maid, Eden, ordered and I nodded. I stared at the heap of plates before me and my shoulder dropped. This has been my life for the past 2 days now, working at the park house in my mom's place.
My eyes welled up at the thought of her. I wondered how she was doing. I have not heard from her since they dragged me away from our home. Was she okay? Of course, she would rush here first thing if she was.
So how was she? Was she still in bed? How bad has she gotten? My heart was heavy from worry with different thoughts running through my mind.
"Are you even listening?"
Eden's voice cut through my thoughts and I flinched. She had said something and yes, I wasn't listening. s**t!
"Run along before I lay my hands on you!"
She continued and I stared, clueless. Her anger grew and was ready to push her into action. Only then did I notice a packed tray for the first time and it clicked.
"Sorry ma... I will get going right away."
I picked up the tray without waiting another second and stumbled out.
I approached the dining room with shaky steps and a thumping heart. The dining room was big and I have been there before. But this time was different. I was not going into an empty room to clean as usual but to serve the triplets.
I paused at the door and just when I leaned forward to take a peek, Lucien glanced my way, making eye contact. My heart stopped instantly. He flashed a sly smile , his eyes roaming all over me. Before I could gather myself, it was the three of them, looking me down. I didn't wait long to read the expression on their faces before I looked away, but one thing was clear: They weren't so surprised to see me, which I found strange.
I have tried not to cross paths with them for the past two days. I was hoping to spend the brief stay here and disappear as soon as possible, but here we are.
"Are you going to stand there forever?"
Eden spat and I jerked. I didn't know she was behind me. I took a shaky step forward into the room, aware of the eyes on me.
"Calm down Natasha... walk it easy."
I tried to encourage myself. I managed to walk to the table and dropped the tray in one piece, about to leave.
"Won't you plate our meal?” Lucien asked and I stopped.
"Oh not today." I said inwardly, releasing a shuddered sigh. Eden shot me a scowl for hesitating.
"Of course I will."
I managed a small smile as I turned around. My hands moved so fast as I scooped each spoon full into their plates. I guessed if I was fast enough, I would be done and out before they tried anything stupid.
"Pass me the jar, please."
Orion said from the other side of the table, his eyes not lifting from the book before him. I picked up the glass jar filled with fresh orange juice, about to make the turn. But something swept me off my feet, landing my butts down and the glass shattering on the ground. Pain shot up my waist, but I didn't miss Julian’s leg slide back under the table as if it didn't just trip me down.
There was silence, a deafening one that lasted for a second. A snort broke through the air, followed by a loud slap sound.
"You clumsy brat!"
Eden barked, hitting me hard across the face. I sat there, face down in shame and embarrassment.
“Not here… not in front of these people” I cried inwardly, trying to hold back my tears from dropping. I didn’t know how, but I managed to drag myself up and ran off.
I raced to the south wing of the pack, desperate to get away from everyone. Tears blurred my vision, rage aching my chest. I stopped when I didn't have the strength to continue and dropped on the grass.
"They won't get away with this!"
I gritted, fisting the grass on the ground. I had had enough of their cruelty, and it was time to stand up to them. Now they were aware of my presence in the pack house, they would not stop till they made me worse than miserable.
"You won't let that happen, Nat. Show those bastards you got some games too." I seethed, wiping the tears I hated to shed.
I pondered how to go about this and found myself smiling at the crazy ideas that popped in my mind. Just at that moment, a bell went off. It was not just any kind, but the one that marked an event.
I looked up instantly at the dark clouds forming in the sky and my heart leaped.
"It's a full moon tonight." I gasped, my eyes glistening with excitement. It was a special night in the wolf world, experienced once every season. In this season, the full moon was mating day.
Anxiety mixed with my excitement and rippled in my blood. It was the night I had waited for entire life. I would finally mate with Chris, my long-time boyfriend, and move to his pack. That way, this hell of a life in this pack would be over. I raced off to the maid quarters with excitement, instantly forgetting all my troubles.
That evening, as the moon became clearer in the sky, my anxiety grew. I imagined for a thousand times how the feeling would be.
Will I feel the force? Will Chris come here to find me or will I go to his pack? I paced the floor of my bedroom, unable to settle down.
My legs began to cramp and I decided to rest them for a bit. But just then a strange feeling came over me, springing me up.
"It's now..."
I whispered, identifying the feeling even when it was my first time. It was nothing like they had described. So exceptional. Strange, yet beautiful. I found myself walking away without any effort. There was a force, so strong and fierce, pulling me like a magnet.
"Come on, move those feet faster"
A voice that was not mine urged, and I could feel a part of me come alive.
'Is that you?’ I asked.
"Of course, it's me. Now let's go find mate!"
My wolf purred, and I couldn't help the giggles that rolled from my throat. My pace hastened as I walked through the hallway eager to find Chris.
"Mate is here!"
My wolf cooed immediately, as I crossed into the woods and I stopped. The strange, yet sweet feeling overwhelmed me and I found myself almost trembling. 'He made it here before me' I thought, turning red from sensation.
"Behind you."
My wolf whispered, and I turned slowly, only to be met with the biggest shocker.
"No.."
My heart dropped, my smile instantly replaced with terror.
"She?”
Lucien sneered, his brothers raging behind him.
“f**k, No.”
