I paced the floor of my room with my mind running a thousand places. I looked at the paper in my hand one more time, trying to make sense of it. Of course, the words were in bold letters, but reading them out made my head want to explode. Then there's the little gold key that dropped out when I opened the envelope. Everyone in the pack knew what that key was and where exactly it should be.
I stormed out of my bedroom at dawn the next morning in search of her.
"Eloise!"
I screamed, barging into her room. I didn't mind breaking the schedule I had strictly followed for the past four weeks in the triplets chambers. The triplets would be ruffled, but that was better than messing with the Alpha.
"I know you're in here, come out right now!"
"Whoa! Keep it down."
She emerged from an inner room, her eyes searching everywhere cautiously.
"What in the world is the meaning of this?”
I threw the key and paper at her, but she totally ignored me, moving straight to the door to shut it close.
"Now we can talk." Her eyes flashed with anger. But they went poker the next second.
"You're not trying to set me up, are you?"
I inquired, trying to read her expression.
"Don't start throwing accusations, honey. I'm only trying to help."
"By handing me the Alpha's golden key?" I scoffed. "This could get me hanged!"
"Uhm hmm…I didn't hand you the keys. You made the choice of taking them...."
"I didn't even know the contents of the damn envelope!"
"Well, now you do, you have more choices to make. Remain here and be treated like a nobody and eventually die as one. Or, escape and save your dying mother."
Cold chills washed down my spine upon hearing my mother. I had tried not to think about her for weeks now. It was working just fine, or so I thought. I stood helplessly and the walls I had managed to build up the past few weeks came crumbling down on me.
I met Eloise's gaze and the look on them was soft, almost compassionate, which was strange. That b***h has no heart. I snapped my eyes shut, hating myself for letting her use my weakness against me.
"It's okay to accept help sometimes, please don't fight it." She continued and I molded my fist in rage
"What do you want from me!"
"Progress. I want your progress." She shrugged, as though it was natural for her to wish anyone well. "You helped my sister once, remember?"
"What?" I c****d my head, genuinely confused at what she was talking about.
"The petit girl from the Black Sea pack you helped pass her 6th grade exams. That was my little sister. That exam changed her life, and now she's in a better place.
I locked eyes with Eloise for a moment and then it clicked. They had the same eyes and unarguably the same cheek bones.
"You mean— Janet?"
"Janet Weakham."
Her confirmation sealed it all and suddenly memories began to flow in.
Janet was a very bright student and, just like me, was on a scholarship in May High. Unfortunately, she suffered the same fate I did; the unfavorable and constant bullying and harassment from other students that believed we weren't worthy of being there. But unlike me, Janet suffered more because of her petit nature. One day, I managed to witness a mischief against Janet and decided to help. I recovered the exam sheet the notorious students tampered with and Janet's excellence in that one exam changed her life for good. She got a double promotion that granted her another scholarship to college.
"You see why I must help you? This is just my little way of saying thank you," Eloise continued, and I dragged my eyes to her face. The light in her eyes seemed genuine and her words dripped with so much conviction that it was hard to block them out.
But then, there was her history.
I shut my eyes and tried again to shake it off, but it was too late. My heart was already trapped in the claws of her words and all I could see in my head was the face of my "Dying mom."
"Tonight, by 10 at the north gate. I will be around to watch your back."
I hurried out of the Servant's quarters and headed straight to the Alpha’s quarters. To my masters.
"Where do you think you're going?"
Julian barked and I froze. My eyes fell on my hands instantly, knowing I was at their mercy.
"Have you lost your tongue overnight?"
Lucien.
"Or maybe she's a little too shaken to speak." Give her some grace, brothers.
Orion finished and all I did was shut my eyes while I searched my blank head for something. Too bad I hadn't prepared any speech for them, all thanks to Eloise and her distractions.
"5 seconds is enough grace and she has long exhausted it. Guards! Bring her to the showroom now!"
I arrived at the showroom bound by two hefty guards. Just like the name implied, it was "show time", at least for the boys. Anyone who made it here would do anything they wanted. They had the license and we had no choice.
I looked around the fully furnished dimly lit room, clueless about what they wanted. It was my first time there, and I must admit it looked nothing like others described.
Julian took position before me first in one of the king-sized armchairs. Orion and then Lucien.
"We missed breakfast because of your belatedness, but somehow I still want to hear you out."
Orion spoke first, but Julian waved him off.
"It's too late for that now. Good thing our stomach was starving for a better feast." His voice was hoarse, carrying a husky depth that hit my spine.
Our eyes locked, and I melted at the fire in his gaze. My eyes shifted only for safety, but they landed on the others. How cruel.
Tension brewed, the room suddenly airtight. Thoughts began to creep into my head. Nasty thoughts that I wished knew my situation,
"Okay enough of the stalling," Julian barked, and with one wave of his hand, the platform I stood on went crumbling.
"Arrgh!"
