Ji Ling's jaw tightened. "You wandered off without saying a word." Ling Yu'er smirked, tilting her head. "Aw... were you worried about me?" For a moment, his expression flickered, but he quickly looked away. "You're trouble." "And yet you still came back for me," she teased, clasping her hands dramatically behind her back. "See? You do care." Ji Ling's eyes narrowed. "Don't push your luck. How do I explain it to my father if something happens to you?" Ling Yu'er only grinned wider. Ling Yu'er bent down, scooping a pebble from the ground. She tossed it lightly across the pond, watching the ripples spread. "You know, you're not very good company." Ji Ling crossed his arms, standing tall behind her. "And you're too noisy." She turned to glare at him. "Excuse me? I was silent until you showed up." His lips curved-just barely-like he was holding back a smirk. "For once." Ling Yu'er gasped. "Did you just... joke? Was that a joke?!" Ji Ling looked away, pretending to examine the trees. "You're imagining things." "Oh no, no, no," she said, circling him like a little cat who had found a weak spot. "I saw it. A smile. A tiny little smile. Don't try to deny it." He shot her a warning glance, but she only clasped her hands behind her back and leaned closer. "Aha! I knew it. You're not made of stone after all." Ji Ling exhaled slowly, clearly trying to keep his composure. "You talk too much." "And you pretend too much." She gave him a cheeky grin before skipping a few steps ahead of him. "Don't worry. I'll make you laugh properly one day. Just wait." Ji Ling watched her from behind, his face unreadable. But deep in his eyes, a faint glimmer betrayed his thoughts-she was already getting under his skin. Meanwhile, by the pond, Ji Na and Ji Luo strolled side by side, tossing pebbles into the water. Their chatter quieted when their eyes landed on Ji Ling and Ling Yu'er walking close together across the garden path. Ji Na nudged Ji Luo with her elbow, her eyes sparkling. "Look at them... don't they look close?" Ji Luo chuckled, covering his mouth to stifle a laugh. "If they get any closer, the palace walls might start whispering." They both burst into muffled giggles, too caught up in their amusement to realize a shadow loomed behind them. "You two have way too much time, don't you?" The siblings froze, stiff as boards, before slowly turning around. "B-big brother!" they exclaimed in unison. Ji Xingling stood there, hands clasped behind his back, his expression calm but his sharp gaze giving nothing away. His eyes lifted briefly toward Ji Ling and Ling Yu'er. For the faintest second, the corner of his lips curved into a smirk. "Big brother, you're smiling," Ji Luo dared to point out with a mischievous grin. "Shut up," Ji Xingling snapped without missing a beat. He grabbed them both by the sleeves, dragging them along the path. "You should spend more time being useful in the palace instead of gossiping." "No, forgive us, big brother!" Ji Luo cried dramatically, stumbling after him. "Sister Princess, save me!" Ji Na wailed toward Ling Yu'er, her voice carrying across the pond. "She can't hear you," Ji Xingling said flatly, pulling both of them away despite their whining. Later that evening, The soft glow of lanterns filled Ling Yu'er's chamber, painting the silk curtains a warm golden shade. She sat cross-legged on the couch, her long pink robe loose now that the day's formalities were over. Li Tian sat across from her, eagerly leaning forward like a child waiting for gossip. "And then," Ling Yu'er said dramatically, waving her hands, "he dismissed everyone. Everyone, Tian! Even you!" Li Tian gasped, covering her mouth. "Me? Oh, how cruel!" she teased, then burst into giggles. Ling Yu'er leaned closer, lowering her voice as though sharing a great secret. "He told me to walk him around the palace. Imagine! Me, his personal tour guide!" Li Tian laughed so hard she nearly toppled over. "Our princess, reduced to showing him around? Heaven help Tiandou!" Ling Yu'er pouted before breaking into a grin. "You should've seen me. I almost refused. But then I thought, 'Hm. Let's see how long he can resist my charm.'" Li Tian clapped her hands together, her eyes sparkling. "Yes! That's the spirit, Princess. You'll have him tripping over his own robes in no time." Ling Yu'er tossed her hair dramatically, though a little blush colored her cheeks. "Well, it won't be easy. He's colder than winter snow. But no one has ever resisted Ling Yu'er's cheerfulness before. Not even Zheng!" Li Tian chuckled again, leaning back with a mischievous smirk. "Oh, I can already picture it. The mighty Second Prince, defeated... not by swords, not by war, but by your smile." The two girls burst into laughter, the sound echoing like bells through the chamber. For that moment, the worries of palace life seemed far away. The laughter in Ling Yu'er's chamber grew louder, spilling through the half-closed windows into the quiet evening air. Ji Ling, who had been passing by on his way back from the training grounds, slowed his steps. His sharp ears caught fragments of the conversation. "...the mighty Second Prince, defeated... not by swords, not by war, but by your smile!" Another round of laughter followed, bright and unrestrained. Ji Ling paused, his hand resting lightly against the wooden pillar beside him. His expression didn't change much, but there was a flicker in his eyes - irritation, amusement, or perhaps curiosity, even he couldn't say. He stood there for a brief moment, listening as Yu'er's voice carried out again, cheerful and full of life. "Let's see how long he can resist my charm." "What an i***t" Ji Ling's lips twitched ever so slightly - the faintest ghost of a smirk, gone as quickly as it appeared. He exhaled quietly, then turned away, his footsteps retreating into the shadows of the corridor. Inside, Li Tian leaned closer to Yu'er. "Did you hear something?" Yu'er tilted her head, frowning. "No... probably just the wind." She grinned again, completely unaware of the pair of eyes that had just lingered outside her chamber.
