Dangerous Addiction
Chapter Two: An Offer Wrapped in Shadows
The black sedan idled beside the curb, its engine humming softly in the quiet night.
Elena's pulse pounded in her ears.
She looked around the nearly empty street. The few people nearby were too far away to notice her, and the shops had long since closed. Every instinct told her to walk away.
"I think you've mistaken me for someone else," she said, taking a cautious step back.
Damien Moreau regarded her with the same unreadable expression.
"I rarely make mistakes."
His voice was calm, almost gentle, which somehow made it more unsettling.
One of the men seated in the front passenger seat stepped out and opened the rear door.
"Please," he said politely.
Elena folded her arms.
"No."
For a brief moment, silence hung between them.
To her surprise, Damien gave a slight nod.
"Good."
She frowned.
"What?"
"You said no."
"...Is that a problem?"
"No."
He leaned back against the leather seat.
"Too many people agree with me because they're afraid."
"I'm not."
"I noticed."
His lips curved into the faintest hint of a smile.
"I only need five minutes."
Elena hesitated.
Five minutes.
She could handle five minutes.
Keeping a careful distance, she stepped closer to the open car door but remained standing outside.
"What do you want?"
Damien's eyes never left hers.
"When you picked up those papers tonight... did you recognize any of the names?"
"No."
"Did you read the documents?"
"No."
"Are you lying?"
She crossed her arms tighter.
"If I were, would I tell you?"
Another faint smile.
Interesting.
"You've answered every question honestly."
"Because I have nothing to hide."
"Everyone has something to hide."
"Not me."
For the first time, Damien looked almost thoughtful.
"I hope that's true."
He reached into the pocket of his coat and removed a business card.
It was black.
No company logo.
No job title.
Only his name and a phone number embossed in silver.
He held it toward her.
"If anyone asks about tonight, call me."
"I won't be calling."
"You might."
She reluctantly accepted the card, mostly because refusing it felt more dangerous than taking it.
"Can I go now?"
"Yes."
She stared at him, waiting for a catch.
There wasn't one.
Without another word, the car door closed, and the sedan disappeared into the night.
---
The next morning, Elena convinced herself the strange encounter was over.
By the time she reached campus, she had almost laughed at how paranoid she'd been.
University life quickly swallowed her attention.
Her best friend, Chloe, found her outside the lecture hall.
"You look terrible."
"Thanks."
"I meant tired."
"I worked late."
Chloe linked her arm through Elena's.
"You need coffee."
"I need sleep."
"You can sleep after graduation."
Elena laughed for what felt like the first time in days.
Maybe everything really was normal.
Maybe Damien Moreau had simply wanted to confirm she hadn't seen anything important.
That was all.
Or so she hoped.
---
After her afternoon lecture, Elena left the campus library carrying a stack of books.
As she reached the parking lot, she noticed something unusual.
People were staring.
Not at her.
Behind her.
She turned.
A familiar black sedan was parked across the street.
Her stomach dropped.
The driver remained inside.
No one got out.
The car simply waited.
She hurried in the opposite direction.
It followed.
Not aggressively.
Not closely.
Just... enough.
She ducked into a busy café.
The sedan continued past without stopping.
She released the breath she'd been holding.
Coincidence.
It had to be.
---
That evening, she returned to work.
The restaurant buzzed with its usual crowd.
Maya approached almost immediately.
"You'll never guess who called."
"The landlord?"
"Worse."
"The manager?"
"Worse."
Elena's eyes widened.
"...Who?"
"A man asking for you."
"What did he want?"
"He didn't say."
"Did he leave his name?"
Maya hesitated.
"...Mr. Moreau."
The tray nearly slipped from Elena's hands.
"He called here?"
"He asked if you were working tonight."
"What did you tell him?"
"I said I wasn't allowed to give out staff information."
"Good."
"But he already knew your schedule."
A chill crawled down Elena's spine.
How?
---
The rest of the evening passed in uneasy silence.
Just before closing time, the manager approached her.
"Someone left this for you."
He handed her a small cream-colored envelope.
There was no stamp.
No address.
Only her name written in elegant handwriting.
Inside was a single note.
You're being watched. Trust no one.
There was no signature.
Her hands trembled.
"This isn't funny," Maya whispered after reading it.
"I know."
"Should we call the police?"
Elena considered it.
What would she even say?
A mysterious billionaire gave her a business card, and now someone had delivered an anonymous warning?
It sounded unbelievable.
She slipped the note into her bag.
"I'll figure it out."
---
Near midnight, she finally reached her apartment building.
As she searched for her keys, she noticed her apartment door wasn't fully closed.
She froze.
She distinctly remembered locking it that morning.
Slowly, she pushed the door open.
Everything looked normal.
Nothing appeared stolen.
Then she noticed the photograph lying on her kitchen table.
It was a picture of her.
Taken that very afternoon as she left the university library.
On the back, someone had written three chilling words.
Stay away, Elena.
Her breath caught in her throat.
Who had taken it?
And why?
For the first time, she pulled the black business card from her pocket.
She stared at the silver number for several seconds.
Then, with shaking hands, she picked up her phone.
Maybe calling Damien Moreau was exactly what whoever left the warning wanted.
Or maybe...
He was the only person who could tell her why her ordinary life had suddenly become so dangerous.
She took a deep breath and pressed the first number.
