Chapter 7: The Truth in the Ashes
The warehouse burned like a funeral pyre.
Thick black smoke curled into the sky as firefighters struggled to contain the flames. Police officers surrounded the area, keeping curious onlookers behind yellow caution tape.
Elena stood beside the ambulance, wrapped in a gray blanket. Her hands trembled—not from the cold, but from everything that had happened.
One minute they had been searching for answers.
The next, someone had tried to bury those answers beneath fire and rubble.
Damien emerged from the ambulance after a medic finished bandaging the cut on his forehead. Despite the blood staining his shirt, his attention went straight to Elena.
"Are you hurt anywhere else?" he asked.
She shook her head.
"I'm fine."
"You don't look fine."
"I almost died."
His expression softened.
"So did I."
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Then Elena stepped forward and threw her arms around him.
She didn't think.
She simply acted.
Damien froze in surprise before slowly wrapping his arms around her.
For the first time since they met, neither of them was pretending to be strong.
Hours later, they returned to the Moreau estate.
The notebook Adrian had hidden was still safe.
Damien placed it carefully on his desk.
"This better have been worth risking our lives."
Elena sat opposite him.
"Open it."
Taking a deep breath, Damien flipped to the first page.
Most of the notebook contained names, dates, and coded transactions.
Then, tucked between two pages, they found a folded letter.
It wasn't addressed to Damien.
It was addressed to Elena Hart.
Her heart skipped.
"That's impossible."
Damien looked just as confused.
"Open it."
With trembling fingers, Elena unfolded the yellowed paper.
The handwriting matched Adrian's.
If this letter has reached you, then fate has chosen its path.
Elena... if you're reading this, you're finally old enough to know the truth.
Her breathing stopped.
"What...?"
She continued reading.
Your father saved my life many years ago. Before he died, he made me promise that if anything happened to him, I would protect you.
Tears blurred Elena's vision.
"My father?"
She looked at Damien.
"My father died when I was eight."
Damien slowly shook his head.
"I don't think that's the whole story."
The letter continued.
The people hunting me are the same people who hunted your family. They believe your father took something valuable before he disappeared. They are wrong... but they will never stop searching.
Elena lowered the paper.
"My father didn't die in an accident..."
Damien's face darkened.
"He was murdered."
A knock interrupted them.
One of Damien's guards rushed into the study.
"Sir."
"What is it?"
"We found Maya."
Elena jumped to her feet.
"Where?"
"An abandoned church outside the city."
"Is she alive?"
The guard nodded.
"Barely."
Without another word, Damien grabbed his car keys.
"We're leaving."
The church stood alone beneath the pale moonlight.
Broken stained-glass windows scattered colorful reflections across the dusty floor.
Elena spotted Maya first.
She was tied to a wooden chair.
Her wrists were bruised, but she was alive.
"Maya!"
She rushed forward, tears streaming down her face.
"I'm so sorry."
Maya smiled weakly.
"I knew... you'd come."
Damien cut the ropes.
"Can you walk?"
"I think so."
Before anyone could move—
A slow clap echoed through the church.
Victor Kane stepped out from the shadows.
"You always did have excellent timing."
Damien immediately pulled Elena behind him.
"You planned this."
Victor smiled.
"Of course."
"You kidnapped her."
"No."
Victor's smile disappeared.
"I rescued her."
Everyone fell silent.
"What?"
Victor looked directly at Elena.
"The people trying to kill you..."
He pointed toward Damien.
"...aren't working for me."
Damien's jaw tightened.
"You're lying."
"Am I?"
Victor reached into his coat and tossed a small envelope onto the floor.
"Open it."
Damien didn't move.
Elena picked it up.
Inside was a photograph.
It showed Adrian.
Standing beside someone Damien knew very well.
Someone neither of them expected.
The face belonged to Damien's most trusted bodyguard...
Marcus.
The man who had protected Damien for years.
The man who had been with them at the warehouse.
The man who knew every move they made.
Damien stared at the photograph in disbelief.
"No..."
Victor's voice was quiet.
"Sometimes the greatest betrayal doesn't come from your enemies."
"It comes from the people standing beside you."
At that exact moment...
Damien's phone buzzed.
One new message appeared.
DON'T TURN AROUND.
His heart stopped.
Because he recognized the sender.
Marcus.
