Chapter 8: The Man Behind the Mask
Damien's phone vibrated again.
His eyes remained fixed on the screen.
DON'T TURN AROUND.
A second message appeared almost instantly.
If you value Elena's life, stay exactly where you are.
Elena noticed the color drain from Damien's face.
"What is it?" she whispered.
He silently handed her the phone.
She read the messages, her heartbeat quickening.
"They're from Marcus?"
Damien nodded once.
"I've known him for twelve years."
Victor crossed his arms.
"That's what makes betrayal so dangerous. It comes dressed as loyalty."
Before anyone could speak, footsteps echoed through the abandoned church.
Slow.
Steady.
Unhurried.
Marcus emerged from the darkness wearing his usual black suit. He looked exactly as he always had—calm, composed, and unreadable.
He wasn't holding a gun.
He didn't need one.
The silence was weapon enough.
"I'm disappointed," Marcus said, his voice smooth. "I hoped you wouldn't find Adrian's notebook."
Damien's jaw tightened.
"Tell me one thing."
Marcus raised an eyebrow.
"Did you kill my brother?"
Marcus didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he looked at the stained-glass windows, as if remembering something.
"I respected Adrian."
"That's not what I asked."
"No."
Marcus met Damien's gaze.
"I didn't kill him."
Elena frowned.
"Then who did?"
Marcus's expression darkened.
"The man who hired me."
Everyone froze.
"You worked for someone else?" Damien asked.
"For years."
Damien laughed bitterly.
"So every mission... every secret... every conversation..."
"I reported everything."
The words landed like a knife.
"I never wanted to hurt you, Damien."
"But you did."
"I had no choice."
"You always have a choice."
Marcus lowered his eyes.
"Not when the people you love are being held hostage."
The confession caught everyone off guard.
"What do you mean?" Elena asked.
Marcus swallowed.
"My wife and daughter disappeared thirteen years ago."
"They're alive?"
"I don't know."
"They promised I'd see them again if I obeyed."
"And you've been obeying ever since."
Marcus nodded.
"I became their eyes."
"Their ears."
"Their shadow."
Damien's anger slowly gave way to disbelief.
"They used you."
"They owned me."
Before another word could be spoken—
A sharp crack echoed through the church.
Marcus's body jerked violently.
A crimson stain spread across his white shirt.
Someone had shot him.
"Marcus!" Elena cried.
He collapsed to his knees.
Another gunshot shattered one of the church windows.
"Sniper!" Victor shouted.
"Get down!"
Damien grabbed Elena, pulling her behind one of the stone pillars as more bullets tore through the church.
Glass rained from the ceiling.
Victor drew a pistol and fired toward the broken window.
The shooting stopped as suddenly as it had begun.
Silence returned.
Damien rushed to Marcus's side.
Blood pooled beneath him.
Marcus coughed painfully.
"They..."
He struggled for breath.
"...they know I talked."
"Who?" Damien demanded.
"Who are they?"
Marcus weakly reached inside his jacket and pulled out a small silver key.
He pressed it into Damien's hand.
"Locker..."
"Number..."
His voice faded.
"Thirty-seven..."
"At Grand Central Station."
Damien leaned closer.
"Who's behind all this?"
Marcus's lips moved.
Only one name escaped.
"...Cassandra..."
His eyes closed.
The church fell silent.
Elena stared at Marcus's lifeless body.
"He died trying to tell us the truth."
Damien slowly closed Marcus's eyes.
"I judged him before I knew his story."
Victor looked toward the shattered window.
"The sniper wasn't trying to kill us."
"He was silencing Marcus."
Damien stood.
"Then whoever Cassandra is..."
"...she's the one pulling the strings."
Just then, Elena's phone vibrated.
Unknown Number.
She hesitated before opening the message.
It contained only a photograph.
A little girl, no older than eight, smiling beside a woman whose face had been torn from the picture.
On the back, in faded handwriting, were six chilling words:
"You were never supposed to survive."
Elena's hands began to shake.
"This..."
She whispered.
"...this is me."
Damien looked at the photograph, then at Elena.
If the picture was real, it meant one terrifying thing.
Elena hadn't stumbled into this conspiracy by accident.
She had been part of it from the very beginning.
