Chapter 9: Ghosts of the Past
The photograph slipped from Elena's trembling fingers.
Damien caught it before it touched the floor.
He stared at the smiling little girl in the picture, then back at Elena.
"It really is you?"
She nodded slowly.
"I remember this dress."
Her voice barely rose above a whisper.
"My mother bought it for my eighth birthday."
Victor took the photograph from Damien and examined the faded image.
"This wasn't taken by accident."
"What do you mean?" Elena asked.
Victor pointed to the background.
"There."
Standing several feet behind the little girl was a man wearing dark sunglasses.
His face was blurred, but one detail stood out.
A silver wolf pin was fastened to his jacket.
The same wolf symbol they had found in Adrian's warehouse.
Damien's eyes narrowed.
"The wolf again."
"It's not just a symbol," Victor replied. "It's a society."
"A society?"
"A secret organization."
"One that operates above governments, corporations, and criminal families."
Elena's stomach tightened.
"So my family was connected to them?"
Victor looked away.
"I believe they were trying to escape them."
The following morning, Damien drove Elena to Grand Central Station.
Marcus's final words echoed in his mind.
Locker... Number Thirty-Seven.
The station buzzed with commuters, unaware that two people searching for answers walked among them.
Damien inserted the silver key into Locker 37.
The lock clicked open.
Inside was a weathered leather briefcase.
Elena opened it carefully.
There were several passports, stacks of cash in different currencies, and a thick file stamped:
CONFIDENTIAL
Damien pulled out the first document.
His expression darkened.
"No..."
"What is it?"
He handed the file to Elena.
It was an adoption record.
At the top, in bold letters, was her name.
Elena Grace Hart.
Her hands shook.
"I was adopted?"
"But my parents..."
She looked up, tears filling her eyes.
"They loved me."
Damien placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder.
"Being adopted doesn't make them any less your parents."
She nodded through her tears.
"I know."
"But why was it hidden?"
Victor continued searching through the briefcase.
He froze when he found another sealed envelope.
It was addressed to Damien.
Inside was a single handwritten letter.
Damien,
If Marcus gives you this, then he finally chose the right side.
Everything you've believed about Elena is incomplete. She wasn't simply adopted. She was rescued.
The people hunting her have searched for her for fourteen years because she is the last surviving heir of the Ashcroft family.
Protect her. They must never discover what she inherited.
The letter was unsigned.
"What did I inherit?" Elena asked.
No one had an answer.
As they left the station, a little girl ran past Elena, accidentally bumping into her.
"I'm sorry!" the child said before hurrying away.
Something fell from the girl's pocket.
Elena picked it up.
It was a folded piece of paper.
She called after her, but the child had already disappeared into the crowd.
Curious, she unfolded the note.
Three words were written inside.
TRUST NO ONE.
A second line followed.
They're watching now.
Damien's instincts flared.
He scanned the busy station.
Dozens of strangers.
Businessmen.
Students.
Families.
Then he noticed them.
Three people wearing identical silver wolf pins.
Watching.
Not speaking.
Not moving.
Just... watching.
"Elena."
His voice was calm.
"Don't look at them."
"Why?"
"We're leaving."
They walked toward the exit without changing pace.
Behind them, the three strangers began to follow.
Outside, Damien's driver pulled the SUV to the curb.
Just as Elena reached for the door handle—
A black motorcycle roared between them.
The rider snatched the briefcase from Victor's hands and sped into traffic.
"No!" Victor shouted.
Damien jumped into the driver's seat.
"Get in!"
The SUV lurched forward as tires screeched against the pavement.
The chase had begun.
The motorcycle weaved through cars with impossible speed, the briefcase strapped tightly to the rider's back.
Damien refused to let it disappear.
Because whatever was inside that case...
Someone was willing to kill for it.
And for the first time, Elena realized the truth wasn't just dangerous.
It was priceless.
