Chapter 3 SAVANNAH'S POV. "NEVER!!" "Margret, at least let me land first-" "There's nothing to explain, Edward. All I know is that my one and only daughter is not going to be married off to our enemies. That is never going to happen!", She said firmly, and Edward sighed in frustration, knowing that he was going to have a hard time getting it through his wife's head. "Do you even hear yourself? Do you even know what you're telling me to allow? You want Avery to be shipped off to that Kingdom to be married to that good-for-nothing family? What if they kill her when we can't protect her anymore?" "Nonsense! That will never happen-" "And what if it does? You'll get revenge by killing the whole of Sylvia? And what if you do? Does that bring back my daughter?" "Honey, you need to understand the situation at hand. First of all, we have to do it to end the war that has been looming between our kingdoms for generations now. Secondly, it's the wish of the Moon Goddess. I swear, I'm not happy with the decision, but we do not have a choice-" "To hell with the Moon Goddess!!", Margaret nonchalantly dismissed with a hiss. "Margaret!! How dare you utter such blasphemy?!!" "I said it and I'll say it again! To hell with the Moon Goddess and her wish! I would rather die than allow the girl I groomed and nurtured... The daughter that came from my belly, to be sold off to those wolves! It will never happen!" "Margaret, you need to snap off your illusion and come to terms to reality-" "Your dinner is here sir. Wh... Where do you want me to put it-" "Put it anywhere you goddamn please and get the hell out of my room immediately!! Can't you see that I'm having a conversation with the Luna here?! Can't you read the atmosphere? Does it look like I'm in the mood for your stupid food?!", He thundered at me before he got the chance to know that I was the one he was talking to. Not like his demeanor changed when he realized it was me. I wasn't surprised. I wasn't any different from a common maid anyway. I'd been standing here for the past five minutes, waiting for the right time to announce my presence, but I was too tired for their back and forth that I had to chip in. I couldn't tell what the argument was about, but I knew father needed Avery to marry another royal family, and aunt Margaret was not having it. There was no use staying longer, because I usually had no right to be a part of family decisions like this. I gently placed the tray of food on the side table and bowed before making for the door. "If you're so desperate, why don't you give Savannah off as the sacrifice?" Aunt Margaret's sudden mention of my name caused me to grind to a halt, and something told me I was going to regret it. "Savannah is not who do they're looking for-" "And how do you know that?", She fought him. "As unfortunate as it sounds, she came from your loins, and that makes her your daughter too." I just stood there like I was invisible, while they decided my fate in my presence. "The spiritual seer did not ask for a specific daughter of yours. What he instructed was that a daughter from your loins be married to the heir of Sylvia. How does that disqualify her?", She questioned him, hand on her waist. Wait a minute... Did she just opt that I be married off to the heir of Sylvia Kingdom? The same Kingdom that has been our enemy for as far back as I can remember? Father turned to me, and for the first time in a long time, his eyes did not carry hate. But I know that it was because he was in need of something from me. Up until now, they had never considered me as a daughter of the Alpha, until it was time for a princess to go on a suicide mission. "I need your help, Savannah...", He slowly walked up to me and held my hands in his. "The Kingdom needs your help. The seer brought a message from the Moon Goddess, and she asked that we settle the dispute between our kingdom and Sylvia by marrying a daughter of mine to the heir of Sylvia. I promise you it's going to be the best decision you've ever taken. Not only will you marry a handsome prince, but you'll be the Luna of Sylvia in a few years to come", he gently cupped my face in his hands and spoke softly. "You'll do it for your father, right?" "If it's such a rosy offer, why can't Avery do it?", I suddenly blurted. The look of shock on his face made it obvious to me that they were not expecting me to ask any questions, but to just agree. But I wasn't a fool. I could only endure so much. "Well...", Father frantically tried to look for words, and I could see my stepmother sending me a death glare over his shoulder. But I didn't care. Not anymore. Not tonight. "I'm sorry, but I can't marry the prince of Sylvia. I have gone through so much pain, and the only thing I hope for now is to get married to a man who loves me just as much as I love him. I will not marry a stranger from the land we despise, to please you." *** As I scraped the pots that I used to cook dinner tonight, my legs were still feeling wobbly under me, threatening to give in and make me crumble. Where the hell did I get that kind of courage from?! For the first time, I made my decision and stood on it instead of succumbing to theirs, and I honestly didn't know how to feel. I was a little scared, but I felt relieved. Like a weight had gotten off my chest. I caressed the pendant handing over my chest that held my late mother's image and smiled. I'm sure she was smiling with pride wherever she was. "You're quite brave, I must say", a sudden voice wiped the smile off my face immediately. I turned to meet the cold eyes of my stepmother. "So your father asked you to get something done, and you decided to talk back at him? So what do you think of yourself? That you deserve a round of applause?", She questioned sarcastically. "I didn't do anything wrong." "You have been nothing but useless to me since I married your father, and the one time you had a chance to be useful to us, you decided to be a dunce", She muttered with a disappointed sigh. Being here with her alone scared me to death, but I tried not to show it. "Can't you see that I was trying to help you? You've become the most despised person in this palace because of your worthlessness. Look around you. You're living like a maid in your own father's house. Nobody cares if you die or live. In fact, it would be good riddance to bad rubbish if you actually go join your mother..." Her hurtful words were beginning to pierce my soul, but I saw this coming. "And this was a chance to go somewhere far and try to start life afresh, and you're throwing it away? I'm disappointed, really. I thought you had something up in your head", she spoke with so much hate. "Savannah." The way she mentioned my name made the atmosphere tense. "You will go to your father first thing tomorrow and tell him that you've changed your mind, and that you're going to marry the prince of Sylvia. Do you understand?" I couldn't even dare to look her in the eye, but I could still feel her glare peeling my skin off. "I'm sorry, stepmother. I won't marry him-" She suddenly charged at me with full speed and I shielded my face with my hands, thinking she was about to give me a dirty slap. But I felt her hands around my neck for a split second, and the next thing I heard was a snap. I slowly took my hands off my face to see what was happening, and I noticed... My chest was bare... The pendant that was sitting beautifully on my chest was... In her hands!! The sight of the pendant in her possession caused my heart to beat hard in fear. "Stepmother, please!", I begged her in tears. "That pendant is the only thing my mother left for me before she died. It's the only thing that reminds me of her! Please give it back!!" "Are you going to marry the prince or not?!!" "Aunt Margaret, please!!!", I cried helplessly. Ignoring my pleas, I watched as she turned on the gas cooker to the highest ignition and threw the pendant to the blazing fire. "Stepmother!!" I rushed to the gas cooker to put it off, but she pushed me away with so much force, I crashed to the tiled ground, pain coursing through my entire being immediately. My head was dizzy. I could feel fresh, warm blood dripping down my head. But that wasn't what hurt me most. The sight of my mother's pendant melting and burning under the heat made my heart break in agony. "I'll ask you one more time!! Will you marry prince or watch your useless pendant turn to chaff-" "I'll marry the prince!! I'll marry him!! I'll do whatever you say... Just put the fire off! Please!!", I cried in weak shame. I saw an evil smile curve up her lips, and she slowly turned the gas off. "Good girl. Get ready. You're getting married in the next eight hours", she gently caressed my cheeks.
