THE HOSPITAL BED

825 Words
Beeping sounds from the electrocardiogram announced itself repeatedly, to my ears, like a timing bomb. The ooze greeting my nostrils isn't one my body condones and would accept to endure for too long. Why am I here? I have never, for once, liked the smell of drugs, nor that of the hospital. My eyelids split… And the first view it caught was a white-rob donning personnel, and some few other individuals. Standing by the bed, I found myself on. Curiosity was registered boldly on their faces, like they have waited for long, in expectancy, for my lids to flit. Their faces appeared blurry at first, but I managed to recognize Linda and Stephanie, seconds later. The lite curtain that was to shield the sunlight, from penetrating the room was struggling to do it job, as it staggered shameless to the rhythm of the calm breeze, penetrating via the window. I made to sit up, but, was hurriedly held down by the lady on white. A beautiful nurse. Easy Steve! Easy! Linda and Stephanie chorused in concern. It was at this point, aches and pains, greeted my bones and joints for the first time. What is going on, I exhaled, wearily. Why are we here, and not the party venue? “Relax, Stephen. Everything will be fine!” I heard Linda say, patting my hands mildly. Did I hear her say 'everything'? What else could be wrong, aside this hospital, and me being oblivious to how I got on this bed. What happened at the party, I gasped under my breath? My thoughts were beginning to adjust to reality. I sensed the tension between the ladies, and it got me even more worried. Where is James? I questioned, as I tilted my neck to face the ladies. My eyes caught Stephanie flap her lashes to Linda, before she urged the nurse to go announce to the doctor that I've woken. Her actions, furthermore, spelled troubles. I tasked My memory for the umpteenth time on how I got to be on this bed. But, yet again, it delivered no results. I beckoned the attention of the ladies again, and directed the question of James's whereabouts, this time, as stern as I could. I noticed Linda's hesitation, she wanted to say something. But, before her lips split, to let out a word, Stephanie hurriedly spoke. The stutter in her voice exposed the dishonesty in the words she reeled out to me. My mind is troubled. I know she isn't saying the truth. I made to ask further questions, before the doctor announced himself with a fulfilling smile plastered on his chin. “How do you do today, young man?” the doctor asked, examining my eyes, as he, furthermore, requested for the ladies to excuse us. The doctor's lips continued to nibble incoherent noises I didn't care to listen to, as Stephanie and Linda made their way out of the ward. None of the word s from the doctor registered in my consciousness, except the voice of Stephanie, which continued to echo in my head, with what she said; “Spi-Spitit Jay is fi-ne. Err mm… He just stepped out to go… Err mm… Get some few things… Across the road. He-he-he will be here, in no time.” By the window came a voice, that jolted me out of the thoughts I found myself. The voice was that of Linda, and from the conversation she was having, it appeared, she was on a phone call. I didn't know where the strength came from, when I flung the stethoscope the doctor, placed on my chest, as it smacked on the wall. I sprang to my feet. What I heard Linda say can't be true! The doctor made to hold my hands, but I had already disengaged the needle transmitting the drip into my body, as I made for the door. Now face to face with Stephanie. What happened to James? I screamed at her with all the energy I could muster. Stephanie became defeated as she sank her back to the wall. Letting tears pour freely from her eyes. She opened her mouth to speak, but I guess, words eluded her. she finally spoke, after several attempts; “After you vomited and collapsed on Queen Bee, last night, her gang members pounced on you. James attempted to stop them, but he was also beaten, and later taken away”. I felt this sudden surge of rage posses my body, as I asked, rhetorically, why I wasn't told all along… Linda went ahead to tell me who Queen Bee is. And how she and her cult members; (The Black Axe Fraternity) has become a deadly torn in the flesh of all the students on campus. My feet voluntarily shuddered in anxiety. I felt balls of sweat form on my forehead, as they took turns to pop.
