Chapter Six It Is Your Responsibility What a memorable weekend for Jae-sun—Fourth of July. Billy invited him to stay at his house for the weekend, the first time Jae-sun had ever been away from his parents overnight; twelve felt old enough to him. The Johnsons took Jae-sun to a picnic with gunny sack races, watermelon-eating contests, softball games, and all the food you could eat. Jae-sun was becoming very aware of civics, and he enjoyed all the tradition and festivities of America’s Independence Day. Jae-sun took special interest in what happened in Korea, but he also wanted to understand the history and the Constitution of the United States so he could better appreciate why his host country was so special, and hopefully be able to help heal his own country.
