Chapter Eight Coming of Age The first time Jae-sun and his parents travelled to America, they took a ship to San Francisco and a train to Washington, D.C. This time they flew from Seoul to Washington, D.C., on a de Havilland Comet jetliner. What a trip! Jae-sun fell in love with flying. Jae-sun penned a letter to Billy, which included travel plans. Billy’s father agreed to take him to the Washington National Airport to meet Jae-sun’s plane. Twelve years old when his family left Washington, now Jae-sun was fifteen and going through puberty. His culture and his own intellect kept him grounded, even during his teen years. The past three years Jae-sun read much about the war and the politics behind the division of Korea. He’d also formed very strong opinions about the folly of civilization
