Chapter Nine Homecoming Gus would be discharged from the Army in San Francisco. He prepared to leave Hawai‘i via passenger ship on March 3th for the eight-day run to the mainland. Their time in Hawai‘i could be described as idyllic; Gus and Soo-ah were able to spend the six months enjoying each other in their new roles as husband and wife. Many evenings were spent walking on the beach, hand-in-hand, practicing English. At 9:30 Sunday morning, March 3rd, Gus and Soo-ah walked up the gangplank of the SS Lurline to head for San Francisco. Technically still in the Army, Gus donned his uniform. In her fifth month, Soo-ah looked beautiful in a lovely silk maternity dress. All could see they were a handsome, happy couple as they boarded the ship for California. * * * Tugboats guided the SS
