Heartbreak
Somehow over the years Jae-sun and Ji-su endured the horrid conditions at the camp. The extent of their world was Block One from 8:00 each night to 4:30 each morning, then the kitchen, receiving area, and the guards’ dining room all day. Many people died at the camp each week, but it seemed there was a never-ending supply to replace them. Jae-sun and Ji-su survived each year under the oversight of Colonel Ji and their access to more calories than the typical prisoner. It became kind of a host-and-parasite relationship. Colonel Ji and his officers and guards enjoyed the superior food service that Jae-sun and Ji-su provided.
