Leetia’s Boy
If ever a family had a favorite, it would be Leetia, the third of five children. Growing up, she always took care of her two younger brothers, and played peacemaker between her older sister and brother. Her mom worked at the school in the village and depended on Leetia to keep her siblings on task and on time. Her dad fished commercially in Bristol Bay in the summer and trapped in the winter. Leetia adored him. Never giving her folks any trouble—never using tobacco, drugs, or booze—she applied herself and got an education and a job.
Everyone loved Leetia.
In September, Leetia called her mother to share news of a coming baby. Lillian Kashevarof was over the moon, calling all her sisters and her mother. Soon enough, everyone from Manokotak to Naknek knew.
