AN UNEXPECTED REUNION

1232 Words
Alexander Kingston had closed billion-dollar deals without losing his composure, but the young waitress from the café continued to occupy his thoughts. It had been less than twenty-four hours since coffee had spilled across his shirt, yet he could still picture Emma Carter's warm smile and honest eyes. As his limousine moved through the morning traffic, his assistant, David Collins, reviewed the day's schedule. "You have a board meeting at nine, lunch with the investors at one, and a charity committee meeting this evening," David said. Alexander nodded absentmindedly. "Sir," David continued, "are you even listening?" "I heard you." David smiled. "Then why have you been staring out the window for the last ten minutes?" Alexander looked at him. "Since when did you become my therapist?" "Since my boss started acting like a man in love." Alexander let out a quiet laugh. "I met her once." "Sometimes once is enough." Alexander didn't answer. Instead, he looked out the window again. Emma had been different from everyone he had ever met. She hadn't recognized his name, treated him with kindness, and refused to accept favors simply because he was wealthy. Those qualities were rare. --- Meanwhile, Emma arrived at the café before sunrise. She tied her apron around her waist and immediately began preparing tables for the morning customers. Lily walked over with two cups of coffee. "You've been smiling all morning." Emma accepted the coffee. "Have I?" "You have. Don't tell me you're thinking about the billionaire." Emma shook her head, though she couldn't stop herself from smiling. "I barely know him." "But you want to." Emma avoided the question by returning to work. Hours passed as the café filled with customers. Just after noon, the bell above the entrance rang. Emma looked up. Standing at the doorway was Alexander Kingston. Their eyes met immediately. A smile appeared on Emma's face before she could stop herself. Alexander walked toward her. "Good afternoon." "Welcome back," she replied. "I hope today's coffee is safer." Emma laughed. "I'll personally make sure it is." She led him to the same table where he had sat the previous day. "What can I get for you?" "Black coffee." "And something to eat this time?" He smiled. "Surprise me." "I'll do my best." A few minutes later, Emma returned with a freshly brewed coffee and a slice of homemade chocolate cake. "Our chef insists this is the best dessert in the café." "I trust your recommendation." As Alexander tasted the cake, he nodded approvingly. "You were right." Emma folded her arms playfully. "I usually am." Their conversation was interrupted when the café door opened again. A tall woman dressed in an elegant white suit stepped inside. Her expensive handbag and confident stride drew everyone's attention. The moment she saw Alexander, her face brightened. "There you are!" she exclaimed. Without hesitation, she walked over and wrapped her arms around him. Emma froze, the smile disappearing from her face. Alexander gently removed the woman's hands from his shoulders. "Victoria," he said calmly, "what are you doing here?" "I've been trying to reach you all morning." Emma lowered her eyes, suddenly feeling like an outsider. She quietly placed the receipt on the table. "I'll give you both some privacy." Before Alexander could stop her, she turned and walked toward the kitchen, unaware that the woman behind her was watching with a satisfied smile. Emma remained in the kitchen longer than necessary, pretending to organize clean cups while trying to ignore the disappointment settling in her heart. She didn't understand why she felt that way. She had only known Alexander for a day, yet seeing another woman embrace him had left an ache she couldn't explain. Lily noticed the change in her expression. "Emma, what happened?" "It's nothing," Emma replied, forcing a smile. Lily peeked through the kitchen window and immediately understood. "Oh... the woman with him?" Emma nodded slightly. "They look... close." Before Lily could respond, Alexander's voice came from the doorway. "Emma, may I speak with you?" She hesitated before stepping outside. Victoria stood nearby with her arms folded, her expression cold and disapproving. "I'm sorry you had to witness that," Alexander said sincerely. Emma shrugged. "You don't owe me an explanation." "I think I do." Victoria scoffed. "Alexander, this is ridiculous." He ignored her and kept his eyes on Emma. "Victoria is not my fiancée." Emma blinked in surprise. "But she said—" "Our parents wanted us to marry because it would benefit both families," Alexander interrupted. "I refused. I never proposed to her, and I never will." Victoria's face hardened. "You'll regret humiliating me." "I won't marry someone I don't love," Alexander replied firmly. The café fell silent. Victoria glared at Emma before picking up her handbag. "This isn't over," she said quietly. With that, she turned and walked out of the café. Emma watched her leave before looking back at Alexander. "I'm sorry," she said softly. "I misunderstood." "You had every reason to." For a brief moment, they simply looked at one another. Then Alexander smiled. "I was actually hoping to ask you something." Emma tilted her head. "What is it?" "Would you have dinner with me tonight?" She was caught off guard. "Dinner?" "Yes. No business. No meetings. Just two people getting to know each other." Emma hesitated. She had never imagined sharing dinner with a billionaire. Their lives were completely different, and she wasn't sure she belonged in his world. "I don't think I'd fit in." Alexander smiled warmly. "I'm not asking you to fit into my world. I'm asking you to spend one evening with me." His honesty touched her. After a long pause, Emma smiled. "All right." Relief spread across Alexander's face. "I'll pick you up at seven." The rest of Emma's shift seemed to pass in a blur. Every now and then, she caught Alexander glancing in her direction, and each time, they exchanged shy smiles that neither could hide. When the café finally closed, Emma stepped outside carrying her small handbag. Alexander was already waiting beside a sleek black limousine. "You really waited," she said. "I told you I would." The chauffeur opened the door, and Emma climbed inside, amazed by the luxurious interior. As the limousine drove through the glowing city streets, Alexander asked about her family, her dreams, and the life she wanted to build. Emma told him about losing her parents, working hard to support herself, and her hope of returning to school one day. Alexander listened carefully, admiring her strength and determination. The more she spoke, the more certain he became that she was unlike anyone he had ever met. Neither of them noticed the black SUV following a short distance behind. Inside, Victoria watched the limousine with narrowed eyes. "So that's the girl," she muttered. Her driver glanced at her through the mirror. "What should we do, Miss Victoria?" Victoria's lips curled into a cold smile. "Find out everything about Emma Carter. I want to know where she lives, where she works, and everyone she cares about." The driver nodded. As the city lights shimmered ahead, Emma smiled at something Alexander had just said, completely unaware that someone had already decided to turn her life upside down. What had begun as an unexpected meeting in a small café was quickly becoming a love story filled with danger, jealousy, and secrets that neither of them saw coming.
