Sonia Pov
"Cheers!" I said with a bright smile to my friend Lenny, lifting my glass of red wine high. Lenny smiled back and raised her glass too, then we both drank deeply.
We were alone in my room inside Alpha Magnus’ house, celebrating what I thought would be a sure victory. I knew Mavi and Lotlot were going on a blind date today. My cousin Ben had told me all about it. Lenny and I both hated those two women. We wanted them gone for good.
I loathed Mavi because she was trying to take Alpha Magnus away from me. Lenny hated Lotlot because she was Alex’s ex‑girlfriend. So as soon as I found out they were meeting Ben and his friend Ted, I made my move. I offered the two men a large sum of money in exchange for spending the night with them.
I knew they would never say no. Both were deep in debt from gambling. Right now, I was sure they were already doing exactly what I had ordered. I only waited for Ben’s call to tell me the job was done.
"There is no way they can escape this time," Lenny said, grinning widely.
"If they slipped away the first time I tried to get rid of them, they will not get lucky again. Mavi cannot always be saved," I said sharply. I had sent three men to kidnap her before, but Alpha Magnus and Alex had arrived out of nowhere and ruined everything. This time would be different. Alpha Magnus told me he was going to the province to check on one of his business branches. He would be miles away. No one would come to save her.
My cellphone rang loudly from the bed. I almost jumped to grab it.
"This must be the good news we have been waiting for, Sonia," Lenny said excitedly, standing up to stand beside me.
"Hello, Ben? Do you have good news—"
"You wretched woman!" Ben roared before I could finish. "Because of you, Ted and I are lying in the hospital right now! We may never walk again!"
"W‑What? What happened? Why are you in the hospital?" I asked, completely stunned.
"How dare you ask me that! You never told me that the woman you wanted us to touch is the mother of Alpha Magnus’ child! Everyone knows how cruel he is! You paid us to do your dirty work and never warned us! Do you know how close we came to being killed? The money you gave is nothing compared to what we suffered! And yes, I told them everything! Do not blame me!"
I pulled the phone away from my ear as his shouting rang in my ears.
"Wait, Ben. Did he find you—"
The line went dead.
"Sonia? What happened? What did he say?" Lenny asked, her voice full of worry.
I did not answer. I walked shakily to the small table where our wine glasses sat.
"I hate you, Mavi! Why are you always so lucky?! Why does Alpha Magnus always come running to save you?!" I screamed, hurling both glasses hard against the wall until they shattered.
"She escaped again?" Lenny asked. "Alpha Magnus was there? I thought you said he was in the province. Why is he here?"
"He is here, Lenny! They were saved again! Both of them!" My hands shook with rage. "I do not know why he lied to me about being away. What can I do to finally get her out of my way for good?"
"It is not fair how lucky they are," Lenny said, her fists clenched tight.
"And worse, my coward of a cousin told them everything! He admitted that I ordered them to do it!"
Lenny’s face went pale. "Does everyone know it was you? Did he mention that I knew about this too?" She looked terrified that Alex would turn against her.
"I do not know. He hung up before I could ask," I answered quietly, sinking down onto the edge of the bed. "What am I going to do? How can I ever face Alpha Magnus now? What if he finds out the truth and leaves me? I love him so much. I cannot bear to lose him."
Lenny came over and wrapped her arms around me for a moment before pulling back.
"You must act as if you know nothing," she said firmly. "Do not say a word until he brings it up himself. He will not cast you aside easily. He feels he owes your mother a great debt."
A flicker of hope returned to my chest. "You are right. He will not hurt me because of that promise. But how do I make him truly love me? He chose me as his mate long ago, yet he has never asked me to marry him."
"Use Moses," Lenny said simply.
I frowned at the mention of his son. That child was the only thing standing between the man I wanted and me. Him and his mother.
"Forget your anger toward the boy for now, Sonia," she urged. "Win his heart. If you become like a mother to him, Alpha Magnus will see how perfect you are. He will not need Mavi around the child anymore. He will finally make you his wife. And once you are married, then you can find a way to get rid of the boy too."
I hesitated for a moment. Could I really pretend to care for the child of the woman I hated most? But I had no other choice. Moses was the only key left to secure my place in Alpha Magnus’ life and my future as Luna of the pack.
