1. Well-designed plot twists and turns. All novels need a good storyline, and a long novel especially so. For web novels, you could have all the freedom you want to arrange your plotline. If your main character wants something, don’t just give it straight to him or her. Try to set some setbacks, be it a tricky situation or a tough boss to deal with, and elaborate on how he/she overcomes all those to finally achieve their goals. Show readers that the character you’re trying to portrait is vivid and real just like them, and give them the chance to resonate, to laugh, to cry and to grow with the character.
2. Flesh out the novel with subplots. For example, if you’re considering writing a romance novel, the main plot of course has to be the romance between the male lead and female lead, how they overcome all those obstacles to finally find each other their soul mate. However, besides whatever may come in between them, you could also write about their past, their career, their family, etc.
3. Introduce new characters. Only main characters are not enough to make a good story. Just like us in normal life, we have a social life. We meet new people now and then. So do characters in the novel. Introduce new characters as the plot requires and let them do their part to make the story complete. One more thing, be specific and write in detail when introducing characters to readers, especially the main characters. How they look, the way they speak and dress, their attitude towards others…all let readers get a clearer idea of the characters. Just make sure the description is not against the character’s personality and the situation.

How to design characters?Character building is of utmost importance when writing a novel. Have in mind what type of person your protagonist is, slowly reveal it to your readers and enforce that impression from behaviors and events.
1. Stays consistent to his/her setting. I’m sure you’d have a clear idea of what background your characters are from, and his or her upbring will have a significant influence over the way he/she treats people and how he handles matters. If you plan to write a demanding but caring male lead, be sure to explain to readers why he’s developed such personality and his future behaviors shall not go against such traits.
2. Dynamic. Everyone learns, so do the roles in your novel. Your character would learn and improve as the plot develops, that’s what resonates with your readers. They tend to see themselves in the roles you’re writing. However, the core trait of the character, the very fundamental thing that makes him/her the very person should not change.
3. Give him/her some weakness. Humans are complicated creatures who’d surprise you every second. Perfect men always sacrificing for the greater good are great, but it is the weakness that makes your characters real, special and close to readers.
4. What does he/she what? A dream to be a billionaire? A goal to save the world? A Cinderella striving to the top of social ladder? Whatever it is, big or small, best something your readers can relate to, make it clear to your readers what matters the most to your protagonist and then centers your story around that. Do not make it too easy for him or her to get it. Let your readers worry what might happen should your protagonist lose or fail to get it. It is the process of overcoming adversities and finally getting what they want that makes the story most exciting.

How to keep readers interested?Fundamentally, what keeps readers is your plotline, whether it is intriguing and well-paced. Besides that, some tips can help to keep readers interested in your novel longer.
1. Regularity of updates
Regular update is important to keep readers interested. There are millions of novels out there and it already takes great effort to let readers find your story. When they do, give them something to read every day to let them stay or they might just walk away.
Set a word count every day and a time for writing.
2. Interaction with readers
Readers are ones who get to decide whether your novel is great. Read their feedbacks and let them know that you care. However, don’t feel upset when receiving negative comments. Nobody is able to be liked by all.
Thanks for reading, my dear friends. Hope my two cents could at least help you in some way. Ultimately, you’re the master of your novel and you get to decide the pace, plot and characters of your novel.
