THE FAMILY SECRET

441 Words
My mind was reeling with questions, but Emily's expression told me she wasn't ready to reveal more. We stood there in silence, the only sound being the distant crickets and the creaking of the old oak tree. "Let's get out of here," Emily said finally, her voice barely above a whisper. "We can't talk here." I nodded, following her as she led me back to the house. We entered through the back door, avoiding the living room where Jack was watching TV. As we reached the kitchen, Emily stopped and turned to me. "Promise me you won't tell Jack anything," she said, her eyes pleading. I hesitated, unsure of what to do. But something in Emily's expression made me nod in agreement. "I promise," I said, trying to sound convincing. Emily nodded, a look of relief washing over her face. "Thank you," she said, her voice barely audible. "I'll tell you everything soon. But for now, let's just keep this between us." I nodded, feeling like I was getting in over my head. But I couldn't help wanting to know more. As we parted ways, I couldn't shake off the feeling that I was caught in a web of secrets and lies. And my brother, my own flesh and blood, was at the center of it all. The next day, I found myself digging deeper into Emily's past. I snuck into her room, searching for any clues that might reveal her true identity. And that's when I found it - a piece of paper hidden under her mattress, a paper with a name and address on it. I recognized the name - it was a town a few hours away, the same town Emily had mentioned earlier. And the address...it was a address of a law firm. My mind raced as I realized the implications. Emily was in witness protection, and her past was catching up with her. But before I could process this information, I heard a noise behind me. I turned to see Jack standing in the doorway, a look of anger on his face. "What are you doing in Emily's room?" he demanded, his voice low and menacing. I tried to come up with an excuse, but my mind was blank. "I...I was just looking for something," I stuttered. Jack's eyes narrowed, his expression unyielding. "Get out," he said finally. "Get out of her room, and get out of our lives." I felt a chill run down my spine as I realized the danger I was in. And my brother, my own flesh and blood, was the one who was threatening me.
