Elias's POV
The words came out loud and fast like a big storm breaking loose, and I could feel my heart pounding hard in my chest because the anger was so strong it made my whole body shake.
“What in the gods’ name did you bind my wife to?!
Marcus tried to hide his smile, but it wasn't real because it didn't reach his eyes, and I saw a hint of something mean in them, like he was happy about what was going on even though he was trying to hide it.
The big room where we had the pack meeting was still quiet, so quiet that I could hear everyone's breathing, and the wolves around us did not move at all, their eyes looking not at me who was their leader but at Rowan who stood there with his smell suddenly strong and sharp like a fresh cut in the air.
My wolf woke up with a big roar, pushing hard against my thoughts like it wanted to break free and take over everything. “Mine! How could they hurt him? Tear them apart and protect him.” He cursed out.
I quickly moved to stand between Rowan and Marcus, my body tight and ready to fight, my eyes turned bright gold because the wolf was so close to coming out. The whole pack could feel the change in the air, like something big was breaking, and their connections to me felt weak now, not strong like before, because they were not listening to me anymore but to Rowan, and that made my stomach twist in a bad way.
“We need to talk alone, right now,” I said in a low growl to Marcus, my voice rough and full of warning, “or I will make you tell everything in front of the whole pack, and it will not be pretty.”
Marcus slowly nodded his head, acting like he was okay with it, but I could smell a sneaky happiness coming off him like bad smoke, and I knew he had planned this the whole time because he liked being in charge.
We left the meeting place and walked through dark halls that felt cold and long, with Rowan right next to me so close that I could feel his warm body touching my arm, and my wolf kept pushing me to get even closer, to hold him tight and never let go.
“Touch him! Smell him! He is ours!”
I had to squeeze my hands into fists to stop myself from grabbing him right there, from pulling him against me and putting my teeth in his neck until all the bad feelings went away and the world felt right again.
When we got to the elder’s room, the door closed with a loud bang that echoed throughout the space. Marcus turned around and put his hands together as if he were going to say something important.
“Alpha, you want the truth, so here it is, but you might not like it because it changes everything you thought you knew.”
“Tell me now,” I growled, my voice low and dangerous, and I could feel my wolf scratching inside me, wanting to jump out.
“The contract was never just about finding someone to take Lucas’s place,” Marcus said in a smooth voice that sounded nice but felt like a lie, “because Lucas’s bond with you got too strong, and the pack started to slip away from what the elders wanted, so we had to take him away quietly with a poison and make it look like an accident. Rowan was destined to make his place from the start, his smell split when he was born so one part tied to you through the marriage to keep him under control, and the other part sleeping deep inside him, ready to wake up as a way to stop any Alpha from getting too powerful.”
My blood felt cold like ice running through me, and my wolf howled loud in my head.
“Lies! He is telling lies.Kill him!”
But the words fit together too well, like pieces of a puzzle, because Lucas’s death had always felt wrong, and the contract had parts that did not make any sense, and Rowan’s strange pains started right after we signed it.
I looked at Rowan, his face white and his eyes wide with shock, but he did not look broken yet, and that made my wolf push even harder. But the words got stuck in my throat because if I said I had guessed something bad about Lucas’s death but hid it to stay strong for the pack, it would break the little trust we had left.
“You knew?” Rowan said, his voice small and shaking, but it cut through me like a sharp knife.
Marcus gave a small, cold smile. “We did what we had to do to keep the pack safe and strong.”
Anger flared up inside me like fire, and I jumped forward, pushing Marcus hard against the wall with my arm on his neck making him hard to breathe.“You killed my mate, and then you used his brother like a chain to hold me down?”
Marcus made a choking sound. “It was for the pack—”
I pressed harder, my face close to his. “Leave now, before I end this right here and make an example of you.”
He slipped away when I let go, running out like a scared animal into the dark, and I knew he would plan more bad things but for now he was gone.
Rowan did not move, he stood there, his smell getting stronger, full of fear and anger and something sad that made my chest hurt.
I turned to him, my breathing fast and heavy. “Rowan—”
“Do not say anything,” he said, his voice shaking more, “you kept me safe, but you hid this from me,when you know Lucas was my brother, how could you not tell me?”
My wolf growled loudly inside me. “Tell him the truth now!”. But I couldn't because the pain from Lucas was still there, like an old wound that never healed, and I wondered if Rowan was really my mate or if this was just a trick because he looked so much like Lucas.
Instead, I put my hand on his arm. “Come with me, let's go home now, where it is safe.”
I led him back to our house, but the silence between us was thick and loud, like a heavy weight pressing down. And as we walked through the halls, I saw wolves looking at us with strange eyes, not following my orders fast like before because their loyalty was changing.
When one wolf got too close, Rowan's smell came out strong, and the wolf fell to his knees without me saying anything, not to me but to Rowan.
When we got to our room, I locked the door tight so no one could come in, and Rowan went to the window, wrapping his arms around himself like he was cold even though the room was warm. I wanted to hold him close and let my smell cover him to take away the pain, but the bad feelings held me back like chains because I remembered Lucas and how this might not be real.
“You need to stay in this room until I say it is okay to come out,” I said, my voice rough from all the feelings, “because the elders will try to hurt you, and I will not let that happen.”
Rowan turned around, his eyes filled with anger. “Safe, or you want to lock me up like a dog on a chain?”
The words hurt me deep, and my wolf whined.
I moved closer to him, my heart beating fast. “I will not let them get to you, no matter what.”
He laughed a little, but it wasn't a happy laugh. “You already let them, for years I was just a thing bonded to you.”
The air got thick with his smell, stronger than before and wrapping around me like a warm blanket that I wanted but did not trust, and my wolf pushed hard.
“Touch him. Mark him. He is our mate!”
But I couldn't give in because I wondered if this feeling for Rowan was true or just because he looked the same as his brother.
But I couldn't resist for long as I put my hands on his arms, feeling the softness of his skin and the heat under it. I pulled him close slowly but firm, his body fitting against mine like it belonged there, and his head lay under my chin, and I could feel his quick, warm breath on my neck.
His smell mixed with mine, pine and smoke with something sweet and faint that made my body tingle all over, and I could hear his heart beating fast like a drum next to mine, so close that it felt like one big beat. My hands moved down his back, feeling the curve and the way his muscles tightened under my touch, and I wanted to kiss him hard, to taste his lips and let the wolf take over, but I couldn't because if I gave in now it might ruin everything.
His hands came up to my chest, pushing a little but not hard, and I felt the spark of heat where our skins touched, making my breath come short and my body hard with want, but I stopped myself before it went too far, pulling back just enough to look at his face flushed and eyes dark.
“Elias,” he whispered, his voice soft and full of questions, “why does it feel like this, like my body wants you even when your betrayal hurt my heart so much?”
