THE DINER ON ROUTE 9

He was already there, tucked into a corner booth with his back to the wall. "You came," Ryker said as she slid into the booth across from him. "You didn't leave me much choice." "I always leave you a choice, Elena. I just hoped you'd choose this one." A waitress refilled his coffee and disappeared. Elena wrapped her hands around a mug of tea she had no intention of drinking. "Start talking," she said. "You said this changes everything. So change it." "What do you know about fated mates?" "Old wolf legend. Two souls destined for each other, recognized through scent and instinct the first time they meet. Why does that matter?" "Because the night we met, the second I caught your scent, I knew. You're my fated mate, Elena. I've known since the moment you walked through that door soaked from the storm." "That's not possible." "I wish it wasn't. Do you have any idea what it means for an Alpha like me to claim a fated mate who isn't from my own pack? The council would use it as an excuse to attack every wolf under my protection." "So you left." "I panicked. I've built an entire pack out of wolves the council abandoned, Elena. I couldn't risk exposing all of them because of a bond I wasn't prepared for. So I left before the bond could fully lock into place, and I told myself it was the responsible thing to do." "And now?" "Now I've spent weeks unable to think about anything except finding you again, because leaving didn't break the bond. It just made it worse. I know about Damian Cross. I know the council is pressuring your family into an arrangement. I couldn't let that happen without at least telling you the truth first." "You've been having me watched." "I've been protecting you from a distance, because I didn't know how to walk back into your life without destroying everything I've built for my pack. That's not an excuse. I know it's not enough. But it's the truth." "You have no idea how much your timing is about to make things so much worse." "What do you mean?" She hesitated, one hand drifting instinctively toward her stomach beneath the table. "I'm pregnant." The diner went silent around them, or maybe it was just Ryker's stillness that made it feel that way. "Say that again." "I'm pregnant, Ryker. It's yours. There's been no one else." He didn't speak for a long moment. "You're certain." "Two tests. Both positive. I found out three weeks ago." "And you were going to tell me when?" "I didn't have a way to find you," she snapped. "You left without a name, Ryker. I didn't even know if Ryder was real until you called me tonight." "You're right. You're absolutely right, and I'm sorry. This is exactly the kind of consequence I should have considered before I walked away from you that morning." "A little late for that now." "I know." He reached across the table, hesitated, then covered her hand with his own. "Elena, listen to me carefully. This child changes everything, not just for us but for the council, for Damian Cross, for every pack watching to see how this plays out. A fated mate bond combined with an heir is not something the council can quietly bury. They will fight this claim, and they will fight it hard." "So what do you want from me?" "I want you to let me protect you. Both of you. I know I have no right to ask that after disappearing the way I did. But I'm asking anyway, because the alternative is watching you walk into a mating ceremony with a man who sees you as nothing but a political asset, carrying a child that legally makes him a target the moment anyone learns the truth." "This is a lot, Ryker. All of it. In one night." "I know." "I need time to think." "You don't have much time. The council's deadline is closing in, and if Damian finds out about this pregnancy before we've decided how to handle it, he will use it against you in ways you can't undo." "So what are you suggesting? That I just walk away from my family, my pack, everything I've ever known, because a man I met during a storm turned out to be a fated mate with an outlaw army behind him?" "I'm suggesting you let me show up when it matters most, and trust that I mean every word when I say I will not let anyone force you into a life you didn't choose." "That's a big promise for a man I've known one night and one phone call." "It is. I intend to keep it anyway." "You make that sound simple." "It's not simple. It's just true." Her phone buzzed against the table before she could answer him. A text from her mother, three words. The council decided. Elena looked up at Ryker, throat tight. "What does that mean?" he asked, reading her face. "It means," she said, "the choice I was trying to delay just got made for me."
