I observed his body movements keenly waiting for his next action. I've never been this uncomfortable sitting before anyone. I'd thought I was ready to meet the new director but I got the biggest shock of my life which was meeting the man who gave me the most pleasurable romance of my life after six years of being invisible.
Since he didn't recognize me yet, I would have to lay low and not try to make him recall our first meeting at the hotel. I might as well ask for a transfer before he would remember how he first met me.
My parents had called two weeks back and asked that I return to California to meet with Jayson or he would take it upon himself to find out my location in Los Angeles.
I was excited he made efforts to meet with me, it would hasten my revenge to cripple Jayson's ego. On the other hand, I was also not finding it cool working with Justin, he would get to see me almost every day and might recall our first meeting which would definitely spring up heating memories and sensual desires seeing the way he had kept looking at me.
“How long have you worked here?” He paused, boring into my soul. “At Mercury Gardens and Suites,” his throaty but calm voice snapped me out of my thoughts.
“Six years”, I replied swiftly, anticipating his next question.
“Have you always lived in Los Angeles?” he enquired.
He seemed to be looking for answers to his hidden questions, and getting those answers indirectly from me was his goal.
“No, I haven't always lived in Los Angeles.” I replied.
The next words that followed slipped out of my mouth before I could think twice. “You're not stalking me, Mr Justin Jones? Are you?”
“I wouldn't do that Karen, I would rather sit with you outside work life to trash out whatever questions I have,” he replied.
Although his face formed a grimace as he spoke, I could tell his heart was beating fast, his eyes looked comely against the fold on his forehead.
“How many times do you visit the new buildings being constructed where we have the new site?”, he asked, glancing through the file handed to him by Daniel Derek.
“Three times during weekdays”.
“How about on weekends?”
“I didn't know I've to be at the site on weekends, I'm so sorry”.
“You don't have to be”, he asserted and bit the side of his lower lips as though he heard something difficult to comprehend.
“You just have to be there on weekends from now, that will be part of your responsibility”, he paused scanning through the file and looked at me.
“I get that”, I uttered, nodding my head along.
He continued going through the file in silence. When he was done, he dropped it on the table and heaved a sigh of relief. A white face towel was placed on the table, he picked and placed it over his mouth, coughed slightly into it to clear his vocal cords before muttering.
“Since you're a lead supervisor, you would be my assistant until I acclimatize with the work process here in Los Angeles”.
He seemed not to be interested in my response, he simply picked his car keys on the table with the official suitcase by the side of the table and got up from his chair.
I didn't say any other word either as it looked like he was in a hurry to leave the office, I got up as he did and followed in silence as he walked to the door.
As we got out of the office, he set up a new code into the smart lock and tried to see if it worked. It did and he bellowed “Great”.
Before I turned to use the elevator, he muttered “I'll take it as a Yes, that you agree to become my assistant since you didn't object to it”. He smiled and walked to Daniels office tucking his hands in his pocket.
**********
That evening at home, I ate little and said little. Olivia had been her usual self of asking too many questions and chattering about the latest entertainment gossip. I listened without responding, my mind drifting away multiple times from whatever she was saying.
I had enjoyed Olivia's company as she was always abreast with the latest trend but today her voice reechoed much noise in my ears.
“Olivia, can you be quiet please?”, I asked politely.
“Since when did you start getting bored of our discussions”, she peered at me.
“Olivia, just be quiet for this evening please”, I begged, catching my hair in frustration.
“Hmm”, “Alright then”, she sneered. “So tell me how your day went, then I can be quiet”.
“My day went good”, I cut in sharply.
“Is that all?”, she queried, watching me carefully.
What she didn't know was that my heart had been aching with the thought of working as Justin's assistant. I didn't want him remembering who I was, especially as I would be his assistant.
But maybe I was over thinking, maybe he really couldn't remember where we met and was only trying to get to know me and even if he did recall that we had a fling with each other six years ago, it wouldn't change anything, after all he left before I woke up the next morning, if he was so interested In me, he would have waited till I was awake.
I cheered up after concluding on not overthinking his gestures and gave Olivia a warm smile.
“Hey”, “Can't you be quiet after work hours”, I giggled, folding my legs on the couch I sat on.
“What got over you”, she babbled, her nose twitching into a sneer.
“Anyways the new director is having a welcome party at Golden Tulips Lounge”.
“He had even bought over the lounge for this night just to have us as his guest, we are already late, get prepared, let's go grab some drinks”, she giggled.
“But no one told me of a party today”, I managed to speak despite the shock reeking my mind.
“Go get yourself ready Karen”, She screamed as she walked to the bathroom.
At 9pm we arrived at the lounge after getting several calls from our colleagues because we were late to the event.
The moment we got through the gate I sighted Justin pacing about at the reception talking on the phone. His face lit up in a smile as we got closer. He ended the call when we got up close.
Olivia mumbled a short pleasantry and stretched her hands for a handshake before walking past without minding if I followed behind her.
“Hello Karen, you look amazingly beautiful and breathtaking”, his gentle smile broadened across his lips as he spoke further.
“You'll be my special guest this evening Karen”, he smiled and as he held my hands still, he lowered his face to kiss the back of my palm.
