The Counterattack

As dinner was nearly ready, the men of the Trinh household returned home one after another. Earlier, due to what had happened to Ta Shi, they had rushed back from the fields, leaving their tools behind. Now, they had gone back to finish the work and brought everything home. But during that time, something else occurred. While Trinh Trieu was working with his father, Old Master Trinh, and his younger brothers Trinh Nhi and Trinh Tam, they encountered members of the Lam family. Lam Thach approached and grabbed Trinh Trieu by the collar, pulling him aside. “Your family owes six wen for medicine!” Trinh Trieu brushed his hand off. “What does that have to do with me?” Lam Thach glared. “You hit my wife, so you have to pay for her medicine!” Trinh Trieu raised an eyebrow. “Then are you going to return the dozen wen worth of medicine my wife needed? Besides, the village head already ruled on the matter—what, you want to start trouble again?” Lam Thach clenched his fists. “So are you paying or not?” Trinh Trieu replied coldly, “No.” Lam Thach threatened, “If you don’t, your family’s land should go to ours!” Trinh Trieu gave a cold laugh and grabbed Lam Thach by the shirt, lifting him off the ground. “You wanna try me?” Lam Thach struggled. “You dare hit me?” “Try me.” With that, Trinh Trieu threw him to the ground, then stepped forward and pressed a foot down on his head without waiting for a reaction. Lam Thach screamed, “Are you not afraid of the consequences?” “You think I’m afraid of you?” At that moment, Lam Thuy—his father—rushed over, shouting, “Trinh Da! How dare you hit my son?” He looked at Old Master Trinh, “Old Trinh, look at your son!” Trinh Trieu stared at Lam Thuy and said in a steely voice, “Come any closer, and I’ll hit you too.” Lam Thuy growled, “I’ll report this to the village head!” “Be my guest. Let him know your family refuses to accept the ruling and even tried to take our land.” Trinh Trieu stomped hard on Lam Thach’s hand, making him yelp in pain. Then he let go and said coldly, “If you dare mess with my family again, I won’t go easy next time.” Trinh Trieu recalled that the original host of this body used to get bullied by Lam Thach—clearly bigger and stronger, yet he never dared fight back. He turned to his father and younger brothers. “Let’s get back to work.” Old Master Trinh said with concern, “Da, what about the Lam family…” “No need to worry. If they try to bully us, we fight back. We did nothing wrong.” He looked at Trinh Nhi and Trinh Tam. “You two as well. Stop being so timid. The Trinh family isn’t here to be pushed around.” Trinh Nhi had been terrified earlier, but seeing his big brother take action left him exhilarated. Trinh Tam looked at his brother with admiration, “Big Brother, you’re amazing.” Trinh Trieu only said, “Keep working.” Over on the other side, Lam Thuy helped his son up. Lam Thach muttered, “Since when did he get so strong?” Lam Thuy scowled, “Why did you even mess with him in the first place?” Lam Thach snapped, “Because of those six wen for Xiao Hu’s medicine and Ma Shi’s too.” Lam Thuy sighed, “The village head already ruled on it. If they report us again, we’ll only end up worse off. After all… the village head is a Trinh…”
