Chapter Six

MAYA “MAYA” I felt cold shivers run through my body as my name breezed past, carried by the wind like a whisper from the shadows. I couldn't recognize the voice sending a deep sense of foreboding into my bones. It was clearly not the overprotective beta striding before me. “MAYA” It was soft yet commanding, like a whisper that pierced the silence of the night. Every instinct in me tensed, my heart racing as I scanned the shadows, searching for the source. Whoever—or whatever—was out there wasn’t just calling my name. It felt like they were summoning something deep within me, something I wasn’t ready to face. “Maya are you okay? Should we take a break?” Lucas said I frowned in disagreement “I'm fine” “You look pale Maya. We are far off from the pack now, taking a break won't be of harm to you”. He insisted. “I feel weird, Lucas. I can't explain but ever since the night we escaped I've not been feeling like myself” I said, taking a seat on a log in my way. “What do you mean? Do you feel sick?” “No, no Lucas it's not that.” I decided to be quiet about the voices I've been hearing “We are almost at my sister's cabin. Her husband can check you, he's a doctor” As we run deeper into the forest, something stirs inside me—a pressure, like a storm building beneath my skin. The whispers in my head grow louder, and I can feel it—the presence of a power I do not understand. It’s not just my wolf, but something primal Lucas turned with a worried look, “Maya, are you sure you're okay?” I smiled in return. My pulse was changing quickly and my body was reacting to this… energy. Like I was going to lose control of it. ***** “Oh Lucas! Thank mother goddess” A red haired figure rushed to hug him the instant we stepped into its territory. “What is this I hear about you helping a rogue escape? The news is everywhere! Is this the Rogue? Why would you bring —” “She's innocent Evelyn, that's why I helped her. And I have nowhere else to go except to you sister” Lucas explained to cut off her questions. “Let's just go in, we can all talk about it later. We need to freshen up and eat, being on the run is consuming” Evelyn stared strangely at me as she moved with her brother towards the well lit cabin. The cabin, nestled deep within the forest, was surrounded by towering trees that offer natural camouflage and a sense of protection. The interior was surprisingly spacious and inviting. It made me think of home and how much I once felt loved. “Change into this. Then come down for dinner” Evelyn shoved some clothes into my arms. “Thank you” I said, more like a whisper. “Go on Maya, you're safe here” I sighed in relief at his words as I walked into the bathroom. "Why did Lucas bring me here?” My thoughts drifted, I didn't know he had a family outside Stefan's pack. “Why is he still helping me?” I reflected on his earlier defence. But I'm now an outcast, if he keeps doing this, he will become one too. I rinsed my body as I remembered the weird feeling I had throughout the journey. “What is wrong with me”? My thoughts keep wandering. ****** I sat near the window, watching Lucas move around the room. While he assisted Garret in clearing the table, his jaw clenched in thought. Something isn’t right with him either. His concern feels genuine, but there’s something more behind his eyes. A tension I can’t ignore. “Why did you really help me, Lucas?” He freezes, not looking at me, his shoulders stiff. There’s a long silence before he finally speaks. “You don’t belong in that prison, Maya. You didn’t kill Sonia.” “That’s not what I asked. You are the only one so sure of my innocence?” He remained silent. “Is there something I'm not aware of?” “What are you hiding from me, Lucas?! I was getting worked up with his silence. He finally turns to face me, and for a moment, I see the guilt in his eyes. He knows more than he’s letting on. Before I can press him further, a sharp pain shoots through my mind. I stumble back, gripping the table as memories flood in—flashes of the night Sonia died. But that's not all, there were images I didn't recognize. Old battles of wolves, far more powerful than any I’ve ever seen. And then… a face. A woman, strong and fierce, with eyes like mine. “Maya, are you okay? Lucas shaking me back to reality. The vision fades, but my pulse races. “I had a vision” “Tell me, what did you see” Both Evelyn and her husband were gathered around me now. “I saw something, Lucas. Wolves were at war, different from the ones we both know” I shook my head in confusion, “I don't get it, why would I see that?” I observed their eyes, they were tense rather than what I expected. “I saw a woman, she had my eyes. She looked like me to be precise. But she felt different, I can't explain it” “It's happening” Evelyn gasped in response. “We can't be sure about it. I mean she just clocked 18” Garret said. “Buh she saw her face” “Guys let's –” Lucas tried to calm them buh the alarm went off. “Wh– What is happening” “They are here” Garret announced, diving in and out of a room I didn't notice earlier. “Who are they? I thought you said we are safe here?!” My senses sharpened and the energy I felt while in the forest was building up. I glanced at Lucas, who was already armed and in a fight pose. Evelyn was more composed as she stood with her arms behind her. The threats were forcing their way in. My body stiffens, “Lucas, what is going on” “Don't worry, we'll protect you Luna” Garret answered instead. I stunned in confusion The door burst open as I braced myself for another round of demise.
