Chapter One

STEFAN
"s**t!"
I cursed.
I left the bed and sat up. Maya has just caught me and Sonia on bed, having s*x and now she has left.
"s**t!"
I said again the second time.
"What is wrong with you?"
Sonia asked, irritated.
I passed the blanket to her to cover herself and I wore my briefs.
"Did you not just see what happened now?"
I was angry with the way she reacted to this situation. She doesn't even look a little bit disturbed at all.
"What happened? Maya is just being a baby."
Sonia replied, sneering. I couldn't believe what she was saying about her.
"Why would you reply to her like that? What we did to Maya was not fair."
I replied to her.
"So, what are you trying to say? Are the things you are doing to me fair?"
She replied to me back with the same energy.
"Sonia, listen to me."
I began.
"We have been dating for two months now and you told me; no, you promised me that you will break up with her and openly reject her, but you have always been postponing it. You are the real jerk, Stefan."
She lashed out at me.
I moved to her and held her in my arms.
"You know that that's not true. You know that I have chosen you already…"
I began, but she cut me off.
"Then you will reject her. And it is going to be today!"
Sonia said.
"You can't make me do this, Sonia. Today is her birthday! You are her best friend. You know that it will shatter her."
I said, alarmed.
"There is no time like the present, Alpha Stefan. If you are really who you say you are and if the words that you said to me are really true, you will follow me now to the party and we will make an open declaration; you, Stefan will reject her as your mate and you will announce that I am your mate. This is how I will know that you are truly serious with me. And like I said, it must be today!"
She said and walked away from the room, with her naked body obstructing my view.
I sighed and put my hand on my head.
I know that you must be thinking that I'm a jerk at this moment. The Alpha who thinks he can get whoever he wants. After all, I'm the leader of my pack and I'm meant to be ruthless, right? Wrong.
Sonia came into my life when Maya introduced her to me when she got jilted. Maya practically pushed her to me and as I got closer to Sonia, I found out how we were more alike than Maya and I. Sonia's father is the brother to Alpha Tyler, an Alpha that I respected so much. We have been in an alliance for years and we never crossed paths with each other. He was already a veteran and I know that if I somehow connected with him, he would teach me how to lead my pack better.
That was not all, as an Alpha; I have certain needs. Needs that Maya refused to satisfy, insisting that she came of age. But, Sonia was there and she came through for me. She helped me and not just that, she was passionate. She made me feel alive again like before I lost my mother. I fell in love with her.
So, for more than a month, I had to battle over whom I loved the most and who would be more beneficial to me politically. Maya just became my mate by accident and she has little or no significance to me at all. Common sense will tell me to drop this childlike fantasies and go for the real deal which is Sonia.
I braced myself up and I dressed up too.
When I got to the living room, Sonia was waiting for my answer already.
"So, Alpha Stefan."
She called out my name sarcastically.
"What would it be? What are you going to do?"
She asked, with a hint of nonchalance.
I breathed deeply and answered her.
"You know what my answer is, babe."
I said, as I grabbed her by her hand.
"I choose you. I will always choose you."
I said and she leaped up in excitement and kissed me.
"Let's go and get this b***h down."
She said and dragged me. I don't feel good about this though.
MAYA
I ran all the way back home. Not as a wolf but in my human form. I wanted to feel the hurt and pain that strains around my heart. My legs raced on the harsh roadway as I carried on in an unknown direction. The fresh breeze from moving cars touched my cheeks, instantly drying my tears as they spilled out.
Stefan and Sonia? All together! I can not believe this betrayal. That my best friend did this to me even though she knew how much I love Stefan and how I was preparing for this day. It was supposed to be me, not my best friend.
I wept as I thought about it. Is he that horny that he couldn't wait for this long?
As I could no longer withstand the throbbing pain in my legs and heart, I broke down in tears. Sobbing through the rest of the day in the middle of nowhere but trees and harsh wind.
I don't know what next to do but I decided to attend my birthday party anyway. Dashing through the front door, the party has already started and some of them were shocked when they saw my appearance.
Ignoring weird stares, I rushed to my room. As soon as I locked the door, I heard someone knocking at it. I am not interested in any kind of conversation with anyone.
"Go away!"
I said, while my face was in the pillow.
"Maya, it is me, Lucas. Please, open the door."
Lucas? That is Stefan's most loyal and trusted Beta. What does he want with me? I'm sure he must have a hand in this. I walked up to the door, ready to blast at him. But as soon as I opened the door and saw his face, I started crying again.
"Maya, why are you crying? Are you okay?"
He asked softly, his voice showing that he cares. But I don't really believe him.
"You planned it, right?"
I asked him.
"What do you mean?"
He sounded puzzled.
"He was cheating on me and you planned it. That's why you were at my house so early. You were watching me so that you would alert him that I was coming. Guess what? Your plan failed because I caught him cheating on me with my best friend."
I said.
"I don't know about this, trust me Maya. I will talk to him and make sure that he…"
He was interrupted with the voice of Stefan in the living room.
"Can I have everyone's attention!"
He commanded, with his Alpha like tone.
"Maybe he wants to apologise and openly declare you as his mate."
Beta Lucas said and we went into the living room together. He's not going to get off that easily.
When we got there, I was still surprised that Sonia could show her stupid face at my party. Lucas sensed what I was about to do and he held me down and pacified me.
"We would like to first celebrate the newest full adult wolf of the pack."
He started and an array of applause followed. I don't really care at this moment.
"I know many of you have carried out rumours and investigations whether or not Maya Silver is my girlfriend and mate. Today, I have come to clarify the air."
He said, taking a few steps towards me. I didn't miss the warmth his eyes lacked as I stared at him.
“ I, Alpha Stefan of the Silver Moon Pack before every member here today, reject you, Maya, as my mate.”
His words are like ice, cutting through the warm air, and the room was filled with a lot of gasps.
I felt my knees weak. Even Beta Lucas looked surprised.
Cheating on me with my best friend on my birthday is not enough? You still pull this kind of stunt on me on my birthday again? Can you not be more cruel than this?
"Silence!"
He commanded, authoritatively.
"I have not finished."
He said.
I turned my stunned gaze to my so-called best friend and saw her smiling devilishly. This is her plan. She is not going to get away with this.
"I have more news to announce."
He said.
What more can he do to add to the humiliation that he has caused me on my day?!?
