Chapter 10

1169 Words
Third-Person POV: I’ve been watching her closely. There’s something extraordinary about Louisa Powell—real name, Louisa Agatha Davis, before the police adopted her as a child. She’s only sixteen, about to turn seventeen on Valentine’s Day, and yet, she carries a power unlike anything I’ve ever seen. A power she doesn’t fully comprehend. A power that grows stronger with each passing day. It’s not every day you encounter a human who can do what she does. Seeing spirits? Not unusual. Speaking with them? Rare but possible. But sending them back to where they came from? That’s something else entirely. Louisa’s life has been anything but ordinary. This is her third school. The first expelled her after she pushed a girl down the stairs—not once, but five times. What no one realized was that she was trying to save those girls from someone who wanted them dead. She failed every time, and it cost her everything. The second school? She got caught tampering with a car that later crashed. Two boys were inside, but miraculously, they survived. Another incident involved her nearly getting expelled after a stage accident involving a piano. Once again, no one saw the truth: Louisa wasn’t trying to hurt anyone. She was trying to protect them. Jack, her guardian, understood the truth. That’s why he took her far from the chaos of the city. He wanted to shield her from the world—and the world from her. I’ve seen what she can do firsthand. She senses them, speaks to them, and somehow, she’s learned to banish them. It’s unprecedented. If she hones her abilities, they’ll grow unimaginably powerful. But that also makes her a target. For now, she remains blissfully unaware of just how special she is. And that’s exactly why I can’t reveal myself yet. She’s too young, too vulnerable. But watching her navigate this precarious balance between the living and the dead? It’s maddening. And then there’s her connection to Titus, the governor’s son. It seems harmless now—a friendship, nothing more. At least, I hope that’s all it is. ******** Louisa’s POV: “Titus!” I shout, rushing toward him as he strides across the school courtyard. He stops, turning to glare at me. “What now, Louisa? I’ve done everything you asked—kept my cool, stayed out of their way. What else do you want?” His tone stings, and I freeze. Tears well up in my eyes, and his expression softens. “Sorry,” he murmurs, running a hand through his hair. “I didn’t mean to snap.” I nod, swallowing the lump in my throat. I know this is hard for him. How could it not be? Knowing the truth about his former friends—Paul, Darren, and Eric—and doing nothing about it goes against every fiber of his being. But we have no choice. Not yet. “We can’t act recklessly,” I remind him gently. “If we do, they’ll know we’re onto them.” He exhales sharply, pacing in frustration. “They deserve to pay for what they did to Rachel.” “They will,” I promise, my voice steady. “But we need evidence first. Rachel’s going to help us.” “Rachel,” he repeats, shaking his head. “I still can’t believe you’re working with a ghost.” I smile faintly. It’s surreal, even for me. Rachel’s spirit appeared to me a week ago, sharing the horrific truth about what happened to her. She showed me memories of that awful day—how those boys lured her to the abandoned building, humiliated her, and destroyed her. The shame and despair drove her to take her own life. But she didn’t rest. She stayed, waiting for someone who could uncover the truth. And that someone, apparently, is me. “She says Paul has a second phone,” I explain. “If we can find it, we’ll have all the proof we need.” Titus lets out a bitter laugh. “You think he’s just going to hand it over? Those guys are monsters, Louisa. They’ll do whatever it takes to cover their tracks.” “We’ll figure it out,” I say firmly. “But we can’t let anger cloud our judgment.” He stops pacing and looks at me, his jaw tight. “You’re right. We’ll do it your way—for now. But if they catch on...” “They won’t,” I assure him. “We’ll be careful.” He nods reluctantly, the fire in his eyes dimming just enough to reassure me. “Fine. I’ll help you. But you owe me for this.” I smile, relieved. “Thank you.” He rolls his eyes, his lips twitching into a faint smirk. “Never thought my life would turn into a ghost story.” Later that day, as I walk through the school hallway, I hear giggles behind me. I turn to see three girls—the so-called Barbies—watching me with smug expressions. “Trouble in paradise?” one of them sneers, clearly enjoying the spectacle of my earlier conversation with Titus. “Mind your own business,” I snap, turning away. “Oh, don’t be so sensitive,” another one chimes in. “It’s not our fault your boyfriend’s got a temper.” Before I can respond, Titus appears beside me. His glare silences them instantly. “Get lost,” he says coldly. They scatter, muttering under their breath, and Titus grabs my hand, pulling me outside toward his car. Once we’re alone, he starts pacing again, his agitation back in full force. I stay quiet, giving him space. I know how much he’s struggling to keep his emotions in check. Every fiber of his being wants to confront those boys, to make them pay for what they did. But he knows we need to play the long game. After a few moments, he stops and looks at me. “You’re right,” he says finally. “We need proof. But once we have it, they’re done.” I nod, relieved. “We’ll get there. One step at a time.” He sighs, opening the car door. “Come on, I’ll drive you home.” As we head down the road, he glances at me. “How did you even become friends with Rachel, anyway?” I laugh softly. “It’s... complicated.” He shakes his head, a small smile tugging at his lips. “You’re something else, Louisa.” I gaze out the window, my thoughts racing. This is the first time I’ve ever worked with a ghost, and I can’t help but wonder what happens when it’s all over. Will Rachel finally find peace? Or will helping her open the door to something even darker? For now, all I can do is focus on the task ahead. Together, Titus and I will uncover the truth—and make sure Rachel gets the justice she deserves. ------------------------------------
