The Meeting

LAUREL’S POV I was grateful to Marcy’s husband, Andrew. Two days later, he somehow managed to set up the meeting, with both him and Marcy present. It was early in the afternoon. The sun was just beginning to shine brightly. We settled at the outdoor lounge of the mansion, enjoying snacks and chatting while waiting for Frank. He was taking a long to arrive and it was only making me anxious. What could be keeping him? It wasn’t like he moved out of the city. Though we had another mansion in a different part of the city, Andrew said he lodged in a nearby hotel. “Are you sure he’ll make it?” I asked Andrew, sounding worried. “Yes,” he nodded in assurance. “I chose today because it’s a work-free day and I put my friendship with him on the line. Surely, he’ll make it so don’t worry,” he gave a small smile. I forced back a dry smile and took in a deep breath to calm myself. Marcy was seated close to me, stroking my arms gently and offering support. A few minutes later, we saw Frank approaching the lounge. He was dressed casually in a button-down beach shirt, tailored shorts, sunglasses and white canvas. He looked radiant and happy like the issue we had two days ago in his office never happened. While I looked like one returning from hell. He wasn’t alone. Beside him, smiling brightly like a newlywed bride was the woman from the video Marcy had shown me two days back, Miranda. She was equally dressed casually in a wide-brimmed hat, red bohemian dress and sandal heels. Her blonde hair tumbled down like a million tendrils from her hat and bounced in waves with every step she made. She was very beautiful and graceful. Frank and this Miranda lady were holding hands, looking like they were returning from a luxury vacation. A scowl immediately settled on my face as I crossed my arms defensively against my chest. Frank was so shameless. This was meant to be a private meeting with only us, Marcy and her husband in attendance to discuss and resolve the conflict between us. How could he think of bringing her? This shows he has no regard for any of us. Even though I tried to hide it, panic began to build up inside me as my initial thought came rushing in like a violent wind. Maybe she wasn’t just a business partner. For him to be holding her hand and smiling like that, it was obvious they were something more. “Good afternoon everyone,” Frank grinned like a child as they approached. “Before we begin, I’d like for you all to meet my fiancée, Miranda Simpson,” he said, introducing her. I watched with burning eyes as he wrapped his hand around Miranda’s waist while she leaned onto his shoulder. But from the way Frank was smiling around like a fool, he was oblivious to the pain this was causing me. Marcy sensed it. She quietly tried to calm me down but it was too late. I’d already lost it. “You’re so shameless!” I threw at Frank as I abruptly stood up. “This was supposed to be a private meeting between us to settle our issues yet you go ahead to bring her?...” I glanced at her, scoffing in shock before returning my gaze to Frank. “She shouldn’t be here. Tell her to leave now!” “Excuse me?” Miranda’s red-painted lips dropped and her brows furrowed in bewilderment. “Shut up!” Marcy snapped at her. “You have no say in this so just stay out of it.” Frowning like she’d been treated unfairly, Miranda looked up at Frank for defence. Frank took off his glasses, his expression clouded in anger. “Listen and listen good Laurel. The only reason I have come here today is to finalize our divorce process. There is no settling any issues between us. Whatever we had is history now. We-are-done,” he spelt out harshly. “Can’t you get that into your head or would I rather drill it in until you finally understand? Miranda and I love each other very much. The only reason we broke after high school was because she had to travel out to study and I needed time to build myself. Now that we both have gotten to where we want to be in life, nothing is stopping us from being together. Not only are we getting married soon, we are also expecting our first child,” Frank said, lowering to rub her belly and smiling in satisfaction. “We will be sending out invitations soon,” Miranda added triumphantly, a note of mockery in her tone. “You all can come if you like.” The news of the marriage and pregnancy came at me like a thousand shards of glass, shattering me beyond repair. My knees buckled and gave up underneath me as I fell back on the chair. Marcy supported me, saying things to snap me out of the shock I was in. But I was too disoriented, I couldn’t even think clearly. “This is not the way to go about this Frank,” I heard Andrew whisper a scold to his friend. “I don’t know what has gotten into you. You’re making a big mistake and you’re going to regret it.” “No, you’re the one making a big mistake by setting up this silly meeting and bringing me here,” Frank shot back at him. “This is a waste of time. I should have just called my lawyer to fill in for me instead.” I didn’t let them finish their squabble. I looked up at Frank, my eyes soaking with tears. “How could you do this to me…? We promised to forever remain faithful to each other. What happened to Till Death Do Us Part? What happened to Us Against The World, Till The End Of Days?” “Urgh…” Miranda groaned loudly in frustration. “I’m getting sick of this, Frank. Let’s just get this over with and head out of here. You do know we have a wedding to plan.” Frank gave a firm nod and looked at me. It was as though she controlling him with a remote. “You made those promises to remain forever faithful. I didn’t,” he said with no feeling of empathy. “Everything I said to you while we were together was a lie. It was all to get you to love and trust me enough to grant me ownership of all your wealth and assets. Hope you’ve signed your part of the divorce agreement. If you haven’t you’d better do it right away so we can move on or I will just have to go ahead with the legal action to enforce it.” I felt my heart squeeze in my chest. The heartbreak was too intense. I couldn’t take it anymore as I forcefully freed myself from Marcy’s hold and ran inside the mansion. She kept calling me as she chased after me, but I didn’t answer. I just kept running. I wanted to be far away from Frank and everything that had to do with him. If only I had known he’d cause me this much pain, I would never have let him into my life. I gave him my heart, my all, but he just threw it on the floor and crushed it to pieces. I’ve made a mistake. A big mistake that’ll not only hurt me but haunt me forever. The servants were shocked and alarmed as they saw me running. But I didn’t pay attention to anyone. After I climbed the stairs and entered my bedroom, I was about to shut the door when I suddenly felt na useous. The bile forcefully rose to my throat and I left the door, rushing into the bathroom to throw my guts out.
