Chapter Three — The File

Dira’s hands trembled as she pulled the papers from the envelope. At the top of the first page were the words: Adoption Transfer Authorization Her chest tightened painfully. No. No, no, no. She flipped through the papers faster, her breathing becoming uneven. There it was again. Child Name: Dira Monroe Monroe? Her last name wasn’t Carter. Her eyes filled with tears as she continued reading. Transferred into temporary guardianship at six days old. Six days old. Dira stumbled backward slightly, gripping the desk for balance. The room suddenly felt too small. Everything she believed about her life was collapsing right in front of her. A floorboard creaked behind her. “What are you doing?” Dira turned quickly. Jacob stood frozen in the doorway. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then his eyes dropped to the papers in her hands. His face lost all color. “Dira…” “You lied to me.” Her voice cracked instantly. Jacob stepped forward slowly. “Please let me explain.” “Explain what?” she shouted quietly, trying not to wake the others. “Explain how I’m not actually your daughter?” “You are my daughter.” “No, I’m not!” Tears streamed down her face now. “You let me spend sixteen years wondering why I was different!” Jacob looked completely broken. “We were trying to protect you.” “From what?” Before he could answer, Emily suddenly rushed into the room wearing her robe. “What’s going on?” Then she saw the envelope. Her expression fell instantly. “Oh my God…” Dira looked at both of them with disbelief. “So it’s true?” Emily covered her mouth as tears filled her eyes. “Yes.” The word shattered Dira completely. She stepped backward slowly. “No…” “You came into our lives when you were just a baby,” Emily whispered emotionally. “We loved you from the very first moment.” “But I’m not your real daughter.” “You ARE our real daughter,” Emily cried. “Maybe not by blood, but in every other way that matters.” Dira shook her head repeatedly. “So Mandy and Radi are your actual kids…” “And you’re ours too,” Jacob interrupted firmly. “But why didn’t you tell me?” The room went silent. Finally, Jacob spoke carefully. “Because we were afraid.” “Afraid of what?” Emily sat down weakly in a chair. “The day you came into our lives… it happened during the worst moment of our lives.” Dira stared at them silently. Jacob continued. “When the triplets were born, Mandy and Radi survived the delivery…” His voice cracked slightly. “But the third baby didn’t.” Dira froze. Emily began crying harder. “We lost her before we even got to hold her properly.” The words hit Dira like a wave. “And six days later,” Jacob continued softly, “the hospital contacted us about a newborn baby girl abandoned at another hospital nearby.” Dira’s breathing became shaky again. “You.” Nobody spoke for several seconds. “You replaced her,” Dira whispered painfully. Emily immediately stood. “No. Never say that.” “But that’s what happened!” “We loved you because you were YOU,” Emily cried. “Not because you replaced anyone.” Dira wiped her tears angrily. “Then why hide it?” Jacob looked away. “Because the adoption was complicated.” “What does that mean?” Emily and Jacob exchanged nervous looks. And suddenly, Dira realized there was still more they weren’t telling her. Her stomach dropped. “What else are you hiding?” Nobody answered immediately. That silence told her everything. The truth she had just discovered was only the beginning.
