“Hakashi…”
“Hakashi,… save me … save me please”.
I opened my eyes, the warmth of the sunrays softly brushing over my face. I stretched my arms and looking up in to the mirror close by and brushed my hair backwards with my hands. I sat up at the edge of the bed and slid my legs not my flip flops. I picked up my phone, 5 missed calls all from my best bud, Haito. I wonder what’s up. I glanced at the time before heading downstairs.
“Good morning Mom”, I greeted as I spotted her in the kitchen. And Dad was sitting in the living room glued to the TV as usual. “Ohayo Kahashi”, she greeted back.
“What’s today’s date, honey”, my mom called out to my dad who obviously didn’t hear it the first time, so she asked again.
“Second day of 2256”, dad replied.
My thoughts paused for a moments, my mind went blank, it felt as if my heart stopped pumping blood as well.
“A-Again??”” I muttered
“huh??” my mom sounded surprised.
“Where’s Asagi?” I asked.
“She’s in the backyard,” she responded.
“She was up early today, go play with her she must be bored”.
“Damn”, I thought aloud
I then noticed the expression on my mom’s face. She was so worried. I ran out to the backyard to meet Asagi.
“Asagi, Asagi”,
“Ohayo onii-san”, she greeted smiling at me. She’s safe I guess, I let out a sigh of relief. Mom was still looking at me stunned.
“Did you have a bad dream,” my mom asked still looking worried.
“Yeah – I think so”, I said smiling at her, she smiled back.
Just then…
Exactly like before the light shined again making it seem as if the sun was becoming brighter but it only felt cold. My body was gripped with fright I ran to shield Asagi from the light. Mom was still staring at the light ignoring my shouts, leading her to go inside Asagi held unto my clothes as firm as possible, she started sobbing as her body turned to stone. Her voice echoed in her head.
“Kahashi…”
“kahashi… save me… save me… please”.
Mom on realizing that she couldn’t move anymore started screaming, panicking. The image of Asagi’s sad face was printed deep down in my soul as it was the last thing I saw. And then I was swallowed up by the darkness and nothingness again.
“I will definitely save you Asagi, I promised, I said before totally loosing consciousness.
…
I opened my eyes after what seemed to be like a few seconds of loosing my consciousness and saw a strong light amidst the darkness. The stone that covered my body crashed open and into small pieces then it fell to the ground. I fell on my knees as I didn’t have the strength to stand or walk. I was butt-naked. I looked up, taking a quick survey of my environment. Everywhere was bushy, grasses and some trees with broken buildings around. I immediately spotted a stone figure with my sister’s remembrance covered by some thick grasses.
“Asagi”, I crawled over to her. Tears rolled down my eyes, so this wasn’t a bad dream after all. It’s reality. And I failed to save my family even when I was given a second chance. I looked up at the remains of what used to be our house. I managed to stand up and push Asagi to some free space. Then I walked into the house I was able to find black trousers and dad’s black jacket. As I put it on, I suddenly realized that my parents weren’t around. I glanced around and my eyes fell upon some broken stone pieces. I froze.
I was immobilized, shocked, sad, confused. I couldn’t utter any word. My eyes widened. Just when I thought things couldn’t get worse. Dad has been broken. Even if there was a way for him to be turned back to normal, he still had to be in one piece. So there was no turning back from this. Mom was missing; she was nowhere to be found. Dad was dead and Asagi was still petrified. I walked into the kitchen to find some food. Nothing was still good. I walked out and carried Asagi’s body to the house basement which was the only safe place in the house.
“Asagi”…
“ I promise, I’ll come back for you.
Let me just go and gather enough information”… “I’m sorry I failed you”. I couldn’t help the tears from rolling down. I went up and buried dad close by. I was sorrowful the whole day.
The following day, no one had to tell me to go look for food. The hunger toil was aggravating. I went up to the remains of my room and I found a small heap of clothes and some shoes. I picked a bag and stuffed some clothes in. I put on a new pair of trousers and a noodies. Then I wore my sneaker and hug my bag with some supplies inside I locked the basement and headed into the bush.
Asagi’s POV
“Kahashi..”
“Kahashi… save me… save me please”
I d…………. how but I muttered those words without moving my lips and it got to kahashi.
Tears in my eyes, I was just looking into his eyes. I could tell he was so scared and worried. I saw a tear drop rolling down he’s left cheek. I’m sorry Kahashi,” “Be strong’.
Then I was engulfed in darkness.
