Wrong Brother

1360 Words
Maddox Last night’s dinner was boisterous like always except the point where Dad had given us all a warning in not so many words. Brandon, Dominic and I had been insulting each other like we usually do. The little argument about our betraying queen hadn’t affected us. And, I could say that nothing had the ability to affect us as from the tender age we had learned to stick together. Our mother had been serving us and we were consuming the food like hungry savages when Dad had spoken, “Boys.” One word in that tone had all of us sitting straighter in our chairs and food forgotten as we waited silently for our father to speak. After a moment he did. “Maddox, son,” I sat straighter as like my other brothers, my dad’s approval was everything for me. “As you know that it wasn't easy to get you out on a bail, that's why first time I had to negotiate on your behalf and got only eight months for you to serve.” I knew what he wasn’t saying, my dad had never fought a case and had lost. He always came out as a winner, except this time. “Even when I negotiated as much as I could, you still had to go for eight bloody months.” “Dad, it’s okay.” I said, knowing that somehow he was thinking that he had failed me and my brothers and my mother. You see, Mr. Jared Carter- who was one of the best and well known criminal lawyer in the whole state, was our hero. He wasn’t our biological father, that s**t was never our father just a sperm donor. But this man sitting with us having dinner was our Dad, he had saved us all, especially our mother and had loved us since. “No. It’s not.” He had said, his green eyes fierce. “With as much power as I have in this f*****g town, I should’ve gotten you out within minutes.” “Jared, darling, it’s okay…” My mother, always the calm in the storm, had stroked her husband’s back in a soothing manner and like magic, Dad smiled up at her. Taking her hand, he had placed a kiss in the middle of her palm. This time when he had turned back to us brothers, he said, “Boys, you know, I love you as much as your mother loves you. You all are my sons as far as anyone knows and I’d do anything for my sons. There’s only one thing I’m asking in return..” When we all nodded, he had said, “You all promise me not to start any new shenanigans, and Maddox, stay away from Ray Morris.” His voice and eyes had turned serious as he had warned me and I knew it was a warning and an order. We brothers had shared a glance because we all knew there was something else that Dad was not saying. But still, when Dad had prompted, we all had given our promises. I was sitting in the cafeteria with my brother Dominic who was currently eating the face of a girl whose name I didn’t know and doubted that Dominic even remembered her name. My gaze met Cole’s, my best friend, and he lifted his brow silently telling me that how much antsy he was getting sitting in the school cafeteria in between normal students as if everything in his life was normal, too, which wasn’t. Cole and I had met during my with months sentence. Within hour after knowing each other’s story, because we knew we weren’t much different, we had become best friends and since then we were inseparable. Now, he was like the fifth Carter brother for us. My father had taken his case on my request and unlike me he was able to get him out within two days, but Cole had been stubborn to remain behind bars for extra eight months because of me. I nodded at him, without wasting a second he was out of his chair and striding out of the cafeteria. He had his outlet, I knew as soon as he was out of the school he’d find some asshole to beat the s**t out of and after that he would be somewhat normal for a time until the need for pain drove him again. But, for me… there was no outlet. She was absent today. She didn’t come to school. As much as I remember she hadn’t ever taken a leave before because of other students bullying her. So it prompted me to think if today she was absent because of me. Well…. Time to find out. The thought hadn't even finished and as if on queue Kiara entered the cafeteria. I watched as she looked around and then her gaze came to our table and stopped on Dominic. If I hadn't been watching her so closely I would've missed the look of hurt that passed on her face before she turned back around and exited the cafeteria. I really didn't have any idea what was going on with her and my brother, but hell if I was going to find out, at least not yet, I already had something to focus on. “You might want to stop that, I see Mom coming this way.” I stood up from the chair as I said that to my brother. “What?! Where!?!?” I heard the chair scraping the floor and turned around to see Dominic dumping the girl on the floor in a hurry as he tried to get away from her. “What the f**k, Dominic?” The girl screeched. But my brother’s wild eyes were looking for our mother and when he understood what I had done, his fierce blue eyes focused on me. “You little s**t!!” I laughed and flipped a finger at him as I went to chase my query. I caught Kiara before she would've disappeared into the girl’s washroom. Without saying a word, I caught her wrist and turned her around. “Dominic, stop—” “Sorry, sweetheart, wrong brother.” “What the hell do you want from me?” Kiara snatched her hand from mine and turned around once again to go. “Listen… I have only two question for you then you can go.” “And, what if I don't want to answer them?” She came closer into my space as she asked that, stabbing her finger into my chest for emphasis. “Well..” I pressed my body to hers as I replied, “For now, I’m a little busy with your best friend. But, later, maybe…” “And, what do we have here?” A voice drawled from behind us. I knew that voice and I also heard the edge in those words as Dominic came closer and leaned back against the wall, taking in the close proximity between Kiara and me as he eyed us. “I was just asking your girlfriend some questions.” “I am not his girlfriend.” “She's not my girlfriend.” They both replied simultaneously. Then Kiara scoffed and said heatedly, “As if I’d ever give you a chance to be, dipshit.” “You—" “Children…” I stopped them from going on any further, not wanting to be caught in their foreplay. “Do you know why Brenna is absent today?” Kiara’s eyes lost some of the fire and almost turned sad as she said, “Why? Do you want to torture her some more?” “Kiara, answer him.” Dominic said before I could. I could see the battle raging inside her to yell back at my brother or to submit to him. Interesting, it seemed this one got a backbone. She settled on, “I don’t know. What is your next question?” “Fine. Give me her address.” TO BE CONTINUED...
