Chapter 4: The Invitation
After their night out, Lester couldn't shake the feelings he had for Yumi. It was surprising how quickly their friendship had developed. He had never felt this way about someone before. Every time he thought of her, he felt a rush of warmth. The way she smiled, her laughter, and the way she shared stories about her life resonated with him. He found himself daydreaming about her more often than not.
Determined to take a step forward, Lester decided to reach out to her. It felt like the right moment, and he wanted to explore this connection further. He grabbed his phone, took a deep breath, and sent her a text.
Lester: “Hi, how are you? Are you free on Sunday? Let’s have a drink.”
Yumi hesitated at first, her mind immediately recalling her previous relationship with Kevin. The thought of dating another basketball player made her anxious. “I don’t want a basketball player again,” she thought. Yet, there was something about Lester that was different. He wasn’t like Kevin; he genuinely cared and respected her. Still, doubts lingered in the back of her mind.
Just as she was about to put her phone down, another message from Lester popped up, making her chuckle.
Lester: “I promise I’m not like Kevin. I don’t bite! 😄”
She found herself smiling despite her reservations. As Lester continued to message her, his playful banter made her laugh and feel at ease. Eventually, she replied.
Yumi: “Okay, fine! Sunday sounds good.”
As the days passed, Yumi felt a mixture of excitement and anxiety. She wanted to enjoy this outing but worried about the emotions it might stir within her. Could she really open her heart again after what had happened with Kevin?
On Sunday afternoon, they met at Café Firenzo, a cozy spot known for its comforting ambiance and aromatic coffee. The café was filled with warm colors, and soft music played in the background, creating a welcoming atmosphere. When Yumi arrived, she spotted Lester sitting at a corner table, looking relaxed and focused on his phone.
“Hey, you!” Yumi greeted him, her voice brightening the room as she approached.
Lester looked up, his face lighting up with a smile that made Yumi’s heart flutter. “Hey! You made it!” He stood up to greet her, pulling out her chair as she sat down.
As they settled in, they engaged in light chit-chat, sipping on their drinks and enjoying the café’s ambiance. The conversation flowed naturally, and Yumi felt her initial anxiety slip away.
“What do you think about trying that resto bar again?” Lester asked, his eyes twinkling with excitement.
Yumi nodded, feeling a thrill of anticipation. “Yes! I had fun last time. Plus, it’ll be nice to hang out again.”
Lester grinned, clearly pleased. “Great! I can’t wait to see how much you can drink this time,” he joked, and they both laughed.
Their conversation shifted to more personal topics, and Yumi found herself sharing her thoughts on life, her dreams, and what she wanted to do after graduation.
“I’m studying Nursing, and I’d love to work in a hospital or clinic,” Yumi explained, her eyes sparkling with passion. “I want to help people in need, support patients, and be there for families during tough times.”
Lester nodded, genuinely interested. “That’s amazing! It must be fulfilling to help people in such a significant way.”
Yumi smiled, feeling a sense of pride. “It really is. Sometimes it can be challenging, but I know it’s what I want to do.”
Lester leaned in, a curious expression on his face. “What do you see yourself doing after you graduate?”
Yumi took a moment to think. “I’d love to work in pediatrics, helping children and their families. It’s important to create a comfortable environment for them during their healthcare journey.”
“Wow, that’s really inspiring,” Lester said, his admiration clear in his voice. “I think you’ll make a fantastic nurse.”
Yumi felt her cheeks warm at his compliment. “Thanks! I hope so. I just want to make a difference, you know?”
As they continued talking, Yumi felt a deeper connection forming between them. Lester’s laughter was infectious, and the way he made her feel comfortable allowed her to open up more than she expected. They shared stories about their college experiences, and Yumi even told him about the ridiculous things her friends did during their study sessions.
“Oh, you have to tell me more about those crazy study sessions! They sound like a blast,” Lester encouraged, clearly entertained.
Yumi chuckled. “Well, there was this one time when we decided to take a break and ended up having a dance party in the middle of our study group! It was so chaotic, but we laughed so hard that we forgot all about studying.”
“I love that! Sometimes you need those spontaneous moments to balance out the stress,” Lester said, his eyes sparkling. “I think we should have our own dance party sometime—just the two of us.”
Yumi laughed, feeling a warmth spread through her. “I’m not a great dancer, but I’m willing to try if you promise not to judge!”
Lester raised his hands in mock surrender. “I promise! No judgment here. Just good vibes and fun times.”
As their drinks dwindled, Lester glanced at his watch. “Shall we head to the resto bar now? I think they have a great happy hour, and I’m ready for round two!”
“Let’s do it!” Yumi replied, feeling her excitement grow.
They walked to the resto bar together, the conversation flowing easily between them. Yumi felt a lightness in her heart as they talked about everything from school to their favorite movies. She was surprised by how natural it felt to be around him, and it made her forget about the pain of her past.
Once they arrived at the resto bar, they found a cozy spot on the patio, illuminated by string lights that created a warm and inviting atmosphere. The evening air was cool, and the laughter of other patrons filled the background.
“I’ll get the drinks. What do you want?” Lester asked, already scanning the menu.
“I’ll have whatever you’re having!” Yumi replied, feeling adventurous.
Lester chuckled, clearly amused. “I hope you can handle it! I’ll get us both a couple of cocktails.”
As he headed to the bar, Yumi took a moment to appreciate the ambiance around her. The atmosphere was relaxed, and she felt at ease, enjoying the moment.
When Lester returned with their drinks, he raised his glass. “To new friendships and good times!”
“To new friendships!” Yumi echoed, clinking her glass against his.
As they sipped their cocktails, the night unfolded beautifully. They shared stories and laughter, and Yumi felt herself opening up in ways she hadn’t anticipated. With each passing moment, the connection between them grew stronger, and she realized that she was genuinely enjoying herself.
Lester leaned in closer, his expression serious yet warm. “You know, I’m really glad we decided to do this. You’re an amazing person, Yumi, and I really like spending time with you.”
Yumi’s heart raced at his words. She looked into his eyes, searching for sincerity. “I like spending time with you too, Lester. It feels… different. In a good way.”
“Exactly,” he replied, a soft smile on his lips. “You make it easy to be myself around you.”
They talked until the stars began to twinkle overhead, and the atmosphere buzzed with laughter and music. As they enjoyed each other’s company, Yumi realized how much she needed this—someone who made her feel special and cared for.
The night continued, and they shared another round of drinks, and Yumi felt a sense of joy enveloping her. She was starting to believe that maybe she could allow herself to feel something for someone again, despite her past.
Eventually, they left the resto bar, the cool night air wrapping around them. “Want to take a walk?” Lester suggested, gesturing toward the nearby park.
“Sure, that sounds nice,” Yumi agreed, her heart racing with excitement.
As they walked through the park, the conversation continued to flow effortlessly. Yumi felt an undeniable connection growing between them, and every shared laugh and lingering glance deepened her feelings for Lester.
By the time they reached a quiet bench under a large tree, Yumi felt a mix of nervousness and excitement. They sat down, the gentle breeze rustling the leaves above them, creating a peaceful atmosphere.
“Yumi,” Lester began, his voice soft. “I want to be honest with you. I really like you. Not just as a friend, but more than that.”
Yumi’s heart skipped a beat. She hadn’t expected him to say that, but it felt right. “I like you too, Lester. I’ve been hesitant because of my past, but I…”
