Chapter 2: The Beginning of Friendship
Days turned into weeks, and Yumi found herself thinking about Lester more than she expected. The memory of their encounter lingered, a small flicker of warmth in her otherwise introverted life. She noticed him around campus, often surrounded by friends, his laughter echoing through the hallways. Despite the distance, it was comforting to know that they shared a moment, however brief.
Meanwhile, Yumi continued to spend her time buried in her books, but the idea of getting to know Lester better tugged at her heart. She began to join some campus activities, hoping that she might run into him again. But fate had its own plans. As the semester progressed, Yumi’s social circle began to overlap with Lester’s.
One afternoon, Yumi found herself at a gathering organized by a mutual friend. She was sitting quietly in a corner, nursing a drink when she saw Lester enter the room. He scanned the crowd before his eyes landed on her, and a smile broke across his face.
“Hey, Yumi! Fancy seeing you here,” he called out, making his way over.
“Hi, Lester,” she replied, trying to contain her excitement. “How’s the season going?”
“Pretty good, actually. We’re in a winning streak!” he said, his eyes shining with enthusiasm. “You should come to one of our games sometime!”
Yumi felt a surge of anxiety at the thought of attending a loud sports event, but she didn’t want to disappoint him. “Sure, I’ll try to make it,” she said, hoping her voice didn’t betray her apprehension.
As they talked, Yumi learned more about his life—the pressures of being a student-athlete, the late-night practices, and the camaraderie he shared with his teammates. She listened intently, impressed by his dedication.
However, as their friendship blossomed, Yumi was still in a relationship with Kevin, a teammate of Lester’s. Kevin was charming but erratic, often too focused on partying and drinking. Yumi had hoped things would improve, but as the weeks went by, Kevin’s true nature began to emerge.
Yumi often found herself feeling neglected and unsure. She tried to discuss her concerns with Kevin, but he dismissed her worries, insisting that she was overreacting. The disconnect grew, and Yumi started to confide in Lester about her struggles, finding solace in their friendship.
“Relationships can be tough,” Lester said one evening, his tone serious. “You deserve someone who truly appreciates you, Yumi.”
His words resonated deeply with her. It was refreshing to talk to someone who cared, someone who genuinely listened. But she was torn; she didn’t want to jeopardize her friendship with Lester, especially since he was one of Kevin’s teammates.
Weeks passed, and the tension in Yumi’s relationship reached a boiling point. One fateful night, as they attended a party together, Yumi saw Kevin flirting with another girl. The realization hit her like a ton of bricks, and she felt her heart sink. She watched as he danced with her, his carefree demeanor contrasting sharply with her own feelings of betrayal.
That night, Yumi confronted Kevin, her voice trembling with hurt. “Why are you doing this? I thought we were in this together!”
Kevin merely shrugged, his expression nonchalant. “Chill out, babe. We’re just having fun.”
That was the moment she knew. Their relationship was toxic. Yumi ended things that night, her heart heavy but resolute. She felt a sense of liberation, but also fear of what lay ahead.
