Ethan Blackwood stood in front of the bathroom mirror, staring at the mysterious rune on his wrist, his brows furrowed. This strange mark had been there since his "time travel," like an unsolvable puzzle.
"Alright, buddy," he said to his reflection, "you're not just a time traveler now, but a time traveler with a mysterious tattoo. Pretty cool, huh?"
Just then, his smartwatch lit up, showing an incoming call from Jake.
"Hey, Jake," Ethan answered, "What's up? Did Sarah Chen change her mind again?"
"No, not that," Jake's voice sounded excited, "But dude, you need to come to the office right away. I've got an amazing discovery to show you!"
Ethan raised an eyebrow, "More amazing than discovering our coffee machine is actually a Transformer?"
Jake laughed, "Ha ha, very funny. Seriously, Ethan, this is about our AI project. You've got to see it for yourself."
"Alright, alright," Ethan said, "Give me 15 minutes. I hope this discovery is worth sacrificing my breakfast omelet."
After hanging up, Ethan quickly got dressed and prepared to leave. But just as he reached for his keys, the rune on his wrist suddenly emitted a faint blue light.
"Whoa," Ethan exclaimed, "Are we playing Avatar here? Or did I accidentally activate some alien tracking device?"
He examined the rune closely, but the glow had already faded. Ethan shrugged, deciding to put this matter aside for now. After all, in Silicon Valley, the next round of funding was probably more pressing than a mysterious rune.
Arriving at the office, Ethan found Jake pacing back and forth in the conference room, looking both excited and nervous.
"Alright, Jake," Ethan walked in, "What earth-shattering discovery made you skip your morning yoga class?"
Jake turned around, his eyes gleaming with fervor, "Ethan, remember that crazy idea we discussed? About creating an AI that can predict human emotions?"
Ethan nodded, "Of course. That's the project we... boldly envisioned in front of Sarah Chen."
"Well," Jake took a deep breath, "I think I've found a way to make it happen."
Ethan raised his eyebrows, "Really? How? Did you secretly clone a psychologist?"
Jake shook his head, smiling, "No, even crazier. Have you heard of quantum entanglement?"
Ethan's heart suddenly raced. He unconsciously touched the rune on his wrist, "Uh, maybe a bit. Why?"
Jake opened his laptop, "Look at this. I've discovered that if we can use the principles of quantum computing to create an 'emotional qubit,' theoretically, we could achieve instant emotion recognition and prediction."
Ethan leaned in closer to the screen, looking at the complex formulas and charts Jake was showing. Suddenly, he noticed that one of the symbols was strikingly similar to the rune on his wrist.
"This... this is incredible, Jake," Ethan tried to hide his shock, "But is this technology really possible?"
Jake nodded, "Theoretically, yes. But we need a special kind of quantum processor that doesn't exist on the market yet."
Just then, Ethan's wrist started to feel warm again. He looked down and saw the rune glowing with a faint blue light once more.
"Uh, Jake," Ethan hesitated, "If I told you I might know where to find such a processor, would you believe me?"
Jake looked at him in surprise, "What? Ethan, are you joking? This technology shouldn't even exist yet."
Ethan took a deep breath, deciding to take a risk, "Jake, I need to tell you something. But you have to promise that no matter how crazy it sounds, you'll believe me."
Jake furrowed his brow, "Okay, shoot."
"I... I'm from the future," Ethan said, "To be precise, five years from now. And this," he stretched out his wrist, showing the glowing rune, "might be the key we need."
Jake stared at Ethan's wrist, then at his face, and burst out laughing, "Okay, Ethan, you win. This is definitely the craziest joke I've ever heard. Have you been binge-watching sci-fi movies?"
Ethan sighed, "I knew you wouldn't believe me. Alright, let me tell you some things that only someone from the future would know. For instance, three months from now, f*******: will face a crisis due to a massive data leak."
Jake's smile gradually faded, "Wait, are you serious?"
"And," Ethan continued, "next spring, a new type of coronavirus will spread globally, causing a massive economic recession."
Jake's face turned pale, "Ethan, how did you..."
Just then, the rune on Ethan's wrist suddenly burst into a bright light, enveloping the entire room in a blue glow.
"Whoa!" Jake jumped, "What the hell is that?"
As the light gradually faded, Ethan looked at the dumbfounded Jake and smiled helplessly, "Looks like we have a lot to talk about."
Over the next few hours, Ethan explained in detail his "time travel" experience and the origin of the mysterious rune on his wrist.
"So," Jake tried to digest all this information, "you're saying this rune might be some kind of advanced quantum technology?"
Ethan nodded, "That's right. And I think it might be the key to realizing our AI project."
Jake rubbed his hands excitedly, "Awesome! We've got a CEO from the future and a mysterious quantum device. Silicon Valley, prepare to meet your new overlords!"
Ethan shook his head, smiling, "Calm down, buddy. We still don't know exactly what this rune can do. And we need to be careful. Changing the past could have unpredictable consequences."
"You're right," Jake pondered, "So what do we do now?"
Ethan thought for a moment, "First, we need to find someone to help us study this rune. But it has to be someone we can completely trust."
Jake's eyes suddenly lit up, "I know who can help us! An old friend of mine from MIT, Olivia Zhang. She's a quantum physics expert, and super reliable."
Ethan's heart suddenly raced, "Olivia Zhang? What... what does she look like?"
Jake looked at Ethan, slightly confused, "Uh, black hair, big eyes, always wears a red coat. Why? Do you know her?"
Ethan tried to stay calm, "No, I don't. It's just... the name sounds familiar."
"Alright," Jake said, "I'll email her right now."
As Jake bent down to compose the email, Ethan's phone suddenly vibrated. He took it out and saw a message from an unknown number:
"Be careful, Ethan. Some encounters are destined to change everything. - W"
Ethan stared at this mysterious message, his mind full of questions and anticipation. He knew that with Olivia joining, his time-space adventure would enter a whole new phase. And that future he once lost might just be hidden in this mysterious rune on his wrist.
"Hey, Ethan," Jake's voice interrupted his thoughts, "What are you thinking about? You look like you've seen a ghost."
Ethan forced a smile, "Nothing. Just wondering how crazy our next adventure will be."
Jake said excitedly, "It's going to be super crazy! I mean, time travel, mysterious runes, future tech... we're literally living in a sci-fi movie!"
"Yeah," Ethan murmured, "A sci-fi movie where we don't know the ending yet."
After sending the email, Jake looked up at Ethan, "Alright, the email's sent. Let's hope Olivia replies soon."
Ethan nodded, trying to calm the turmoil in his heart. Olivia, this name stirred up countless memories in his mind. In his "previous life," she was not just his partner, but the woman he loved deeply. But now, everything was back to square one.
"Hey, Earth to Ethan," Jake waved his hand in front of Ethan, "You zoned out again. Is this a side effect of time travel?"
Ethan gave a wry smile, "Maybe. Or maybe this damn rune is messing with my brain. Seriously, Jake, don't you think our situation is completely absurd?"
Jake shrugged, "Compared to the weird juice combinations I try every morning, this is nothing. Speaking of which, want to try my latest invention, 'Quantum Pineapple Celery Juice'?"
Ethan made a disgusted face, "No, thanks. I'd rather drink Silicon Valley's latest 'Smart Water'. You know, that stuff claims to increase your IQ."
"Ha!" Jake laughed, "What's next? Energy bars that turn you into a superhero?"
Just as the two were joking around, Ethan's phone suddenly rang. It was an unknown number.
"Hello?" Ethan answered.
"Is this Ethan Blackwood?" a deep voice came through.
Ethan frowned, "Yes, it is. Who is this?"
"Who I am is not important," the voice said, "What's important is the rune on your wrist. It's far more dangerous than you imagine."
Ethan's heart raced, "Who are you? How do you know about the rune?"
"Listen, Mr. Blackwood," the voice continued, "You're playing with forces you don't understand. If you're not careful, you might trigger a time-space catastrophe."
"Time-space catastrophe?" Ethan repeated, catching Jake's attention.
"That's right," the mysterious person said, "Every decision you make, every change, could create a butterfly effect. And that rune, it's a double-edged sword."
Ethan took a deep breath, "So what should I do?"
"Find Dr. Winters," the mysterious person said, "He's the only one who can help you. But be careful, you're not the only one looking for him."
The call suddenly ended. Ethan stared blankly at his phone screen.
"What's wrong?" Jake asked, his face showing concern, "Who was that?"
Ethan shook his head, "I don't know. But Jake, it looks like we're in a much bigger mess than we thought."
He told Jake about the contents of the call.
"Wow," Jake whistled, "This sounds like something straight out of The Matrix. So, are we going to look for this mysterious Dr. Winters now?"
Ethan thought for a moment, "No, let's wait for Olivia's reply first. We need more information before we act."
Just then, Jake's computer made a "ding" sound.
"Speak of the devil!" Jake said excitedly, "It's Olivia's reply!"
The two huddled around the computer, quickly scanning the email.
"Great!" Jake cheered, "Olivia says she's interested in our project and can come to Silicon Valley tomorrow!"
Ethan's heart started racing again. Tomorrow, he would see Olivia again. But this time, she would be a complete stranger to him.
"Uh, Ethan?" Jake's voice interrupted his thoughts, "You don't look so good. Need a glass of my 'Quantum Pineapple Celery Juice' to perk you up?"
Ethan rolled his eyes, "Only if you want to see me throw up my breakfast all over our quantum processor."
Jake burst out laughing, "Alright, alright. How about just a coffee then?"
"That's more like it," Ethan said, following Jake to the break room.
Over the next few hours, the two busied themselves preparing for tomorrow's meeting with Olivia. Ethan tried to focus, but his thoughts kept drifting to the mysterious phone call and the impending reunion.
