**Chapter 9: Flames of Revenge**

1911 Words
The sharp sting of the evening air kissed Azaria's skin as she stood by the expansive window of her penthouse, her gaze fixed on the city lights that glittered below. Her hand tightened around the whiskey tumbler, the amber liquid swirling with the motion, but her mind wasn’t on the drink. It hadn’t been on anything trivial for months. Instead, it clung to the icy thoughts that consumed her, thoughts of Zack, his betrayal, and the wreckage he left in his wake. She let out a slow, deliberate breath. Tonight was the night she would stop hiding from the pain. It was time to act. But not alone. Not anymore. The soft click of a door opening made her turn, her heart rate quickening despite herself. Jaden’s tall, broad-shouldered form appeared in the doorway, his presence familiar and grounding. He had always been a constant in her life, the silent protector in the background, but now... Now, she needed more from him. "Azaria?" Jaden’s voice was low, concerned, as he crossed the room toward her. "You’ve been quiet all day. What’s going on?" Her eyes traced the familiar lines of his face, his dark hair slightly disheveled as if he’d run his hands through it in frustration. She set the glass down, its clink against the table unnaturally loud in the otherwise quiet room. "Sit with me, Jaden," she said softly, gesturing to the couch behind her. His brow furrowed, but he did as she asked, lowering himself into the leather seat, his eyes never leaving her. Azaria sat beside him, close enough to feel his warmth but not touching him. She needed her words to be clear, uninterrupted by anything more than the emotions that threatened to overwhelm her. "I’ve made a decision," she began, her voice calm despite the storm raging inside her. "I’m going after Zack. I’m going to take him down for what he did to me—what he did to us." Jaden’s expression didn’t shift immediately, though she saw the flicker of something dark in his eyes. He leaned back slightly, his arms crossing as he watched her with the intensity of someone bracing for impact. "You mean legally? Or…?" "No," she said, shaking her head. "I’m not talking about courtrooms and settlements. I’m talking about stripping him of everything—his business, reputation, everything he holds dear. I’m going to ruin him the way he ruined me. The way he destroyed us." Jaden’s face hardened, his jaw tight as he clenched his hands. "Azaria," he said slowly, his voice cautious, "I understand why you want revenge. After everything he’s done, he deserves it. But this… Are you sure? It could destroy you in the process." She met his gaze, her heart pounding in her chest, but her resolve was unshakable. "I’ve been destroyed already, Jaden. He took everything from me. I won’t let him walk away from this unscathed. Not anymore." Jaden was silent for a moment, his eyes searching hers. She could see him struggle the internal war between wanting to protect her and the darkness rising in him. "You don’t have to do this alone," he said, his voice rough but firm. "If this is what you want—what you want—I’ll help you. Whatever it takes." Azaria’s heart skipped a beat, a flood of emotions crashing over her all at once—relief, gratitude, and something deeper that she didn’t want to name yet. She had expected him to try and talk her out of it, to reason with her, but instead, he was offering his unwavering support, as he always had. "I don’t want you to get hurt," she whispered, her throat tight. "Zack will fight back. He won’t go down easily." Jaden’s lips twisted into a bitter smile. "Let him try. I’m not afraid of Zack. I’ve watched him get away with too much already." Azaria nodded, her heart pounding with a strange mixture of fear and exhilaration. The thought of dragging Zack down, of watching his perfect life crumble before him, filled her with a cold satisfaction. But, the gravity of what she was planning weighed heavily on her. There would be no going back once they started. "I’ve already started gathering information," she admitted, her voice quiet but steady. "I’ve been following his business dealings, watching for cracks in his empire. He’s made some bad moves recently, and if I can expose them at the right moment…" Jaden nodded, his eyes sharp with understanding. "You need leverage. Something big enough to destroy his credibility, but subtle enough that he doesn’t see it coming." "Exactly," she said, leaning forward, her pulse quickening with the adrenaline of finally sharing her plan. "But I need more. I need something concrete—something that will make it impossible for him to recover." Jaden was silent for a moment, his mind working through the possibilities. Then he reached into his jacket and pulled out his phone, scrolling through his contacts. "I have a few people I can reach out to," he said, his voice low. "Some old friends in finance, others in the media. If there’s anything shady in Zack’s dealings, we’ll find it. And when we do, we’ll make sure the world knows about it." Azaria exhaled, the tension in her chest easing slightly. Having Jaden on her side made the plan feel more real and more achievable. She wasn’t fighting this battle alone anymore. "Thank you," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "I don’t know what I would do without you." Jaden’s eyes softened, and for a moment, the hard edge of revenge melted away, leaving only the warmth of their connection. He reached out, taking her hand in his, his thumb brushing gently over her knuckles. "You’ve always had me, Azaria," he said quietly. "I’m not going anywhere." Her heart ached at the sincerity in his voice, at the loyalty he had shown her time and time again. She hadn’t let herself think too much about Jaden over the past few months, not beyond their friendship and the support he had given her. But now, sitting here with him, the weight of his hand in hers, something inside her shifted. "Jaden…" she began, her voice faltering slightly. She wasn’t sure what she was about to say, but the words seemed to stick in her throat, too tangled with the mess of emotions she had buried for so long. He looked at her, his eyes searching hers as if he already knew what she was struggling to say. But instead of pressing her, he simply squeezed her hand gently and gave her a small, reassuring smile. "We’ll get through this," he said, his voice steady. "One step at a time." Azaria nodded, grateful for the lifeline he offered. She wasn’t ready to confront everything between them just yet—there was still too much pain, too much-unfinished business. But with Jaden by her side, she felt stronger, more capable of facing the storm that was coming. Together, they would take Zack down. And when it was over, maybe—just maybe—they could start to rebuild from the ashes. As the night deepened and the city lights flickered like distant stars, Azaria allowed herself, for the first time in a long while, to hope. Azaria leaned back, her hand still resting in Jaden’s, and let out a breath she didn’t realize she’d been holding. For so long, her world had been a whirlwind of grief and anger, but in Jaden’s presence, a calm washed over her. He had always been her rock, her constant. And now, knowing he was willing to help her exact this revenge, it felt like a weight had lifted off her chest. “I’ve been thinking about what he did,” she said quietly, her gaze shifting to the city below. “It wasn’t just leaving me for her. It wasn’t just about the divorce. It was the lies. The deception. He knew I was pregnant, Jaden. He knew.” Her voice broke, the anger lacing her words. It still felt surreal—Zack’s cold indifference when she told him the news, and how easily he had brushed it aside, already fixated on his new life with Adella. The accident had been the final blow. One that had shattered her body and soul, taking the only piece of hope she had left. Jaden’s grip on her hand tightened, grounding her. "You don’t have to explain, Azaria. You don’t need to justify wanting justice. What he did to you, to your child—he deserves to face the consequences." She met his gaze, her eyes brimming with unshed tears. She hadn’t allowed herself to cry in so long, to be vulnerable. But Jaden’s quiet understanding gave her the space to feel again. “I just want to make sure he doesn’t get to walk away with everything,” she whispered. “He ruined my life and my future. He doesn’t deserve his perfect world with her.” “He won’t,” Jaden replied, his voice firm. “We’ll dismantle it, piece by piece. His reputation, his deals, his relationships—it’s all going to crumble.” For a moment, they sat in silence, letting the weight of their shared mission settle between them. It would be difficult, dangerous even, but Azaria was more determined than ever. There was no room for fear or hesitation anymore. Only focus. “Tell me what you’ve gathered so far,” Jaden said, leaning forward, his expression all business now. “What do we have on him?” Azaria nodded, pulling herself together. “He’s been moving money through offshore accounts. Shady deals with a few foreign investors. There’s also speculation of him funneling company funds into personal accounts—embezzlement. But nothing’s concrete yet. I need proof.” Jaden frowned, his eyes narrowing in thought. “If he’s doing that, we can find a way to trace it. I know a few people who can help track the money flow and dig into his accounts.” Azaria nodded, feeling a spark of hope. “I’ve also been looking into Adella. She’s not as clean as she seems. If we can connect her to something, it’ll weaken his image further. He’s built this entire brand on being the perfect businessman with the perfect life. If the truth comes out…” “It’ll all fall apart,” Jaden finished, his voice carrying a note of satisfaction. She smiled, the darkness that had clouded her thoughts for so long beginning to lift, just slightly. For the first time in months, she didn’t feel like she was drowning in her pain. There was a purpose now, a path forward. “We’ll need to be smart about this,” Jaden added. “No mistakes, no rushing in. We wait until we have enough to destroy him completely.” Azaria nodded in agreement. “No turning back.” Jaden’s gaze softened as he looked at her, his thumb gently brushing the back of her hand. “I’m with you, Azaria. Through all of it.” She looked at him, the weight of his words sinking in. “I know.” And for the first time, since Zack had shattered her world, she truly believed it. She wasn’t alone anymore. Together, they would take Zack down—piece by piece, until there was nothing left of the man who had once held her heart.
