**Chapter 8: The Reunion**

1522 Words
Azaria’s days had been filled with meetings, takeovers, and the never-ending hum of business. Hart Empire demanded all of her attention, and in a way, she was grateful for it. It kept her mind occupied, kept the memories of Zack’s betrayal and the loss of their child at bay. But no matter how consumed she became with work, there were still moments—quiet, stolen moments—when the ache in her heart resurfaced. That evening, after another long day of back-to-back negotiations, Azaria found herself in the quiet of her penthouse. The city skyline twinkled before her, but it felt distant, like a world she was part of but could never truly belong to. Despite all her success, the loneliness clung to her. She had built walls around her heart, impenetrable and tall, to keep everyone out. But deep down, she longed for something more—something real. Her phone buzzed on the glass coffee table, and she glanced at it. It was a message from an unknown number. Frowning, she picked it up. Az, it’s Jaden. I’m back in town. Can we meet? Her heart skipped a beat at the sight of his name. Jaden. The name stirred memories—good memories—of a time when life was simpler and happiness wasn’t such a distant dream. Jaden had been her closest friend growing up, her confidant, the one person she could always count on. But after her marriage to Zack, they drifted apart, and Jaden left the country to expand his business empire. She hadn’t seen him in years. For a moment, she hesitated. Could she open that door again? Could she let someone back into her life, especially someone like Jaden? A part of her wanted to keep her distance, to remain in control of her emotions. But another part, the part that had missed him terribly, made her pick up the phone and respond. Yes. Link up. The next evening, Azaria found herself walking into a familiar, upscale restaurant nestled in the heart of the city. The soft lighting and warm ambiance welcomed her in, but it was the sight of Jaden, sitting at a private corner table, that made her pause. He looked different. Older, and more refined, and yet there was something unmistakably familiar about him. His presence radiated confidence, the kind that came with being a self-made multi-billionaire, but his smile was still the same—warm, genuine, and comforting. Jaden stood as she approached, his eyes lighting up with recognition and affection. “Az,” he greeted, his voice soft yet filled with warmth. “You look as stunning as ever.” Azaria felt a flutter in her chest, something she hadn’t felt in a long time. She smiled, feeling a little lighter than she had in months. “And you, Jaden, you look… different,” she teased lightly, though her eyes betrayed the emotion stirring inside her. “It’s been too long.” They embraced, and for the first time in what felt like forever, Azaria felt a sense of peace. Jaden held her tightly for just a second longer than necessary, and when they pulled back, he was still smiling, but there was a seriousness in his eyes. “Please sit,” he suggested, gesturing toward the table. As they settled into their seats, the weight of the years that had passed between them seemed to lift, replaced by the familiar comfort of their old friendship. “So,” Jaden began, his tone light but curious. “How have you been, really? I’ve read all about Hart Empire’s incredible growth. You’ve become quite the powerhouse, Az.” Azaria let out a small laugh, though there was a trace of sadness in it. “Business is thriving, yes. But you know how it is. Success doesn’t always equate to happiness.” Jaden studied her closely, his sharp eyes missing nothing. “No, it doesn’t. And I know there’s more to your story than the headlines reveal.” She sighed, glancing down at her glass of wine. “It’s been… difficult. The divorce with Zack—well, I’m sure you’ve heard about that, too.” His jaw tightened ever so slightly at the mention of Zack’s name, but he nodded. “I have. I’m sorry, Az. You deserved so much better.” Azaria swallowed hard, pushing back the emotions that threatened to surface. “It’s not just the divorce, Jaden. I lost my child—my child didn’t even get the chance to see the light of day.” There was a long pause as Jaden absorbed her words. His eyes softened, filled with compassion and sadness for her. “Az, I’m so sorry. I didn’t know. I can’t imagine how hard that must have been.” “It was,” she admitted, her voice trembling slightly. “It still is. But I’ve learned to live with it, to move forward. I had no choice.” Jaden reached across the table, his hand covering hers. “You’ve always been strong, Az. But you don’t have to be strong all the time. You don’t have to go through this alone.” His touch was warm and reassuring, and for the first time in what felt like an eternity, Azaria allowed herself to feel vulnerable. She met his gaze, her defenses lowering just a little. “You were always there for me,” she whispered. “Even when I pushed you away.” Jaden’s smile was soft, and understanding. “I never held it against you. I knew you were trying to make things work with Zack. But I’ve always been here, Az. You didn’t notice.” The sincerity in his voice stirred something deep within her, something she hadn’t felt in years. Jaden had always been her rock, even when she didn’t realize it. And now, here he was, offering her the support she desperately needed. “Why did you come back?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Jaden hesitated for a moment as if weighing his words carefully. “I came back because… I missed you, Az. I’ve missed you for a long time. And when I heard about what happened, I couldn’t stay away any longer, I felt maybe you’ll need a shoulder to rely on.” Azaria’s heart pounded in her chest. She had always known there was something between them—something unspoken, simmering beneath the surface. But she had never let herself fully acknowledge it, not when she had been married to Zack. But now, everything was different. “And now that you’re here?” she asked, her voice steady but filled with curiosity. Jaden leaned forward slightly, his gaze locking with hers. “Now that I’m here, I want to be by your side, Az. In whatever way you’ll let me. Whether as a friend, or… more. But I’m not going to push you. I’ll always respect your space.” Azaria’s breath hitched slightly at his words. The offer was clear, and yet it was wrapped in kindness and patience. Jaden wasn’t Zack—he wasn’t the type to force his way into her life. He was giving her the choice, the power to decide what she wanted. For a moment, the weight of the decision hung between them, heavy and unspoken. Azaria could feel the pull toward him, the familiarity of their bond, and yet the fear of opening her heart again kept her hesitant. “I don’t know if I’m ready for anything more,” she admitted, her voice quiet but honest. “I’m still healing.” Jaden smiled gently. “That’s okay, Az. Like I said, I’m here for whatever you need. No pressure. No expectations.” Azaria felt a wave of relief wash over her. It was the answer she needed—the reassurance that she didn’t have to rush, that she could take her time. But more than that, it was the comfort of knowing that Jaden would be there, no matter what. As the evening continued, they talked about everything and nothing. The conversation flowed easily, just like it always had when they were younger. For the first time in months, Azaria felt at ease, like she could breathe again. When the night finally came to an end, and they stood outside the restaurant under the glow of the city lights, Jaden pulled her into a gentle hug. “Take your time, Az,” he whispered against her hair. “I’ll be waiting.” Azaria closed her eyes, savoring the warmth of his embrace. For the first time since the storm of her divorce and the loss of her child, she felt like she wasn’t alone. Jaden was here. And maybe, just maybe, this was the beginning of something new—something that could heal the wounds of her past. As she watched him walk away, a small smile tugged at her lips. The reunion with Jaden had been exactly what she needed. Whether as a friend or something more, he was part of her life again. And for the first time in a long while, Azaria felt hope.
