49. Hope and fear

  Egan   “I’ve noticed that your little bump was bigger than I expected, but I simply imagined that Egan’s baby was as big as him,” Marion observed.  I looked again at the screen, at the black and white outline of two moving babies I was still astonished, holding Alma's hand as if to not let her go. My own heartbeat was accelerating, as my mind swirled in a haze. I could hardly listen to the doctor’s words about the babies’ heartbeats.  Alma was carrying twins. I couldn’t believe it, all the joy that I could feel for this double miracle, was overthrown by fear. This pregnancy would be even harder for Alma than we imagined before, she could suffer, be in pain, she could… I was afraid for her before, guilt was eating me up, but now I was terrified. I was to be the cause of her demise.
