Chapter Twenty-Six: Across the Room

1230 Words
The conference hall was loud. Not in a chaotic way, but in a steady, constant hum—voices overlapping, heels clicking against polished floors, the soft clink of coffee cups being set down. Clara adjusted the strap of her bag on her shoulder as she stepped inside, her badge swinging lightly against her blazer. Cole Development Planning Conference. She had attended dozens of events like this before. Panels, presentations, networking. Nothing new. She told herself this was just another day. “Mrs. Cole?” Clara turned and smiled politely. “Yes?” A woman in her thirties extended a hand. “I’m Rachel from the zoning committee. We spoke over email.” “Oh—yes,” Clara said, shaking her hand. “Nice to finally meet you in person.” They exchanged a few words about the schedule, the keynote speaker, the timeline for the afternoon breakout sessions. Clara listened, nodded, and responded where needed. She was present and focused. Until she wasn’t. As Rachel excused herself to greet another delegate, Clara’s eyes drifted across the room without thinking. It was a habit—taking in exits, faces, movement. Then she saw him. Daniel stood near one of the display boards, his back half-turned, speaking to a man Clara didn’t recognize. He looked older. Not drastically, but enough. Broader shoulders. Sharper jaw. His hair was shorter than she remembered, darker at the temples. For a brief second, her mind refused to catch up. No, she thought. This isn’t happening right now. Daniel turned, and their eyes instantly met. The noise around her faded, but not completely. However, it was enough that it felt like the room had shifted, tilted slightly off balance. Clara stopped walking without realizing she had been moving. Daniel froze. Neither of them smiled, and neither of them looked away. It had been five years, and it was total silence, full of unanswered questions. It was a relationship that had ended without an ending. Clara felt her chest tighten. Her fingers curled slightly at her side. Daniel was the first to move. He excused himself from the man he was speaking to and took a few slow steps forward. He didn’t rush, and didn’t hesitate either. “Clara,” he said softly, stopping a few feet away. Her name sounded strange in his voice now. “Daniel,” she replied. “I didn’t know if you’d be here,” he said. “I almost wasn’t,” she answered truthfully. They stood there, surrounded by people who were laughing, talking, exchanging business cards—completely unaware that time had stalled between two people near the center of the room. “You look…” Daniel paused. “You look well.” She gave a small nod. “So do you.” Silence stretched between them. “I heard you were back,” Clara said finally. “Yes,” he replied. “A few months now.” “I heard,” she repeated. “Through work.” “Right.” Another pause. “I didn’t expect this,” Daniel said quietly. “Neither did I,” she admitted. A staff member passed between them, apologizing as she hurried by. The moment didn’t break, but it shifted. Clara became aware again of where they were. “We probably shouldn’t—” she started. “Yes,” Daniel said quickly. “Of course.” They both stepped slightly to the side, out of the main foot traffic, near a tall glass wall that overlooked the city. Daniel cleared his throat. “You’re… married.” Clara stiffened, then nodded. “Yes.” “I saw the announcement,” he said. “I wasn’t sure if it was real at first.” “It is,” she said simply. “To Ethan Cole,” he added. “Yes.” Daniel let out a slow breath. “I’m glad you’re… taken care of.” She studied his face. “That’s an odd thing to say.” “I didn’t mean it that way,” he replied quickly. “I just—” “I know,” she said, softer. “It’s fine." He looked relieved, then uncertain again. “I didn’t reach out to complicate your life,” Daniel said. “Everything on my end is professional.” “I know,” Clara replied. “Ethan told me you spoke.” Daniel’s eyebrows lifted slightly. “He did?" “Yes.” “How is he?” Daniel asked, then added, “I mean—professionally.” She almost smiled. “He’s… thorough.” Daniel huffed out a quiet laugh. “That tracks.” Another silence fell. “I sent you that message,” Daniel said. “A while back.” Clara nodded. “I read it.” “I didn’t know if you would.” “I did,” she said. “I just didn’t reply.” “I noticed.” She crossed her arms loosely. “I didn’t know what to say.” “That makes two of us,” he said. They stood there, both clearly holding back words that had waited years to be spoken. “Why did you leave?” Clara asked suddenly. Daniel blinked, caught off guard. “Here?” “No,” she said. “Back then.” He looked away, jaw tightening. “I was offered a position overseas. One I couldn’t pass up.” “You disappeared,” she said. “No goodbye and no explanation.” “I was scared,” he admitted. “And selfish." She swallowed. “That hurt.” “I know,” he said. “And I’m sorry... I didn’t come back expecting anything from you,” Daniel added. “I swear.” “I believe you,” Clara said. “And I’m not here to cross any lines,” he continued. “You’re married. I respect that.” She nodded. “Thank you.” Across the room, Clara spotted Ethan speaking with two board members. He hadn’t seen them yet. Her chest tightened again. “I should go,” she said. “Yes,” Daniel agreed. “Of course.” She hesitated, then added, “I hope the partnership works out.” “I think it will,” he said. “We both care about the same things. Preservation and purpose. She smiled faintly. “Some things don’t change.” “No,” he said. “They don’t.” They stood there for one last second. “Take care, Clara,” Daniel said. “You too,” she replied. She turned and walked away before either of them could say more. When Clara reached Ethan, he looked up immediately. “Everything okay?” he asked. “Yes,” she said, forcing calm into her voice. “Just spoke with one of the partners.” Ethan studied her face. He didn’t push. “Do you want to leave early?” he asked. She shook her head. “No. I’m fine." They returned to the conference together, side by side. But even as Clara listened to the next presentation, her mind kept drifting back to that moment across the room—two people frozen in time, finally facing what had been left unfinished. And for the first time since Daniel’s name had resurfaced, Clara realized something clearly. Daniel will always be a part of her past, whether she like it or not.
