“It’s not true,” she said. Her voice came out flatter than she intended.
“I know.” Lily said it immediately, without hesitation, and something in the speed of it should have been comforting and instead landed strangely too fast, maybe, or too certain, though Zara couldn’t have said why it registered at all. “I know it’s not true. I just didn’t want you finding out from, like, a stranger in the dining hall.”
