Ava’s POV
“Miss Moore, it is a good thing that you quickly gathered the funds for Euclid’s treatment, any longer and his condition would’ve deteriorated. It will take us a few months to get his body prepared for the final surgery. Before then, we shall perform other procedures for him. He will remain at the hospital throughout this period. Be rest assured, he will be well taken care of, okay? You’re free to visit him and accompany him during his stay…” The doctor went on to explain other things to me but I was barely listening. My head was hazy as I sat there.
‘I’m about to get married.’ I internally spoke to myself as thought about the recent turn of events. My father was going to have me marry someone I didn’t even know. And he was impatient about this matter. Apparently, I was going to get my certificate tomorrow with my future husband. It was all so sudden. My father told me that the other party was desperate. For some reason, I knew it definitely wasn’t my groom who was desperate.
I didn’t know who my groom was yet. I didn’t have the time to ask my father after he gave me the money.
I would get the useful information soon enough. It was only a matter of time.
After a long talk with the doctor, I went to the ward where Euclid was staying. I managed to get him a single room. I knew he would prefer his own little space than rooming with other children. I also worried that the gloomy air in the other rooms would affect him.
“Ava!” Euclid weakly called out when I walked into the room. I paused and looked at him. My eyes watered at the sight of him weakly leaning on his bed. I hated the sight of the IV attached to him.
“Hey.” I softly said before I walked up to him and comfortably sat in bed with him. I pulled him into my arms as I tried to explain my situation to him. I struggled to explain it to him. I didn’t want him to feel burdened.
Euclid stared at me for a moment before softly nodded, accepting everything I had said. The sight made me almost cry. He was too calm for a child. Most kids would throw a tantrum, yet he remained obedient. I felt like I had failed Cloris.
“L Conglomerate?!” I exclaimed when I saw a simple rundown of who I was marrying. I was still finding it hard to adjust to the situation. My heart was stifled knowing that Daniel was currently frolicking with Mia at that moment.
“Yes. Now, do you know the gravity of the situation? You must not make a mistake tomorrow.” My father said, sternly.
Yes. L Conglomerate was a business empire that had hands in every industry. They were much more wealthy than my father.
I silently nodded and took in the information in my hand. After I was done, I finally understood why my father wanted me to marry this particular person. He could not bear to have such a person be married to his beloved daughter.
I was going to marry William Lewis.
William Lewis was the thirty-five-year-old son of a billionaire.
A tempting offer, if only William was in a good position in his home.
William, unlike his younger brother, he was basically a waste. All his investments and the businesses under his name had gone bankrupt. He was a gloomy man without bearing.
His father, Benjamin wanted him to be married. Perhaps his children would satisfy him instead.
My father, Henry, wanted to use this chance to build a relationship with Benjamin, possibly climbing the social ladder.
I was just a mere pawn. But I had no other choice but to be used. All for the sake of survival.
The Lewis family Mansion was huge. It felt like a castle. Seeing their home was a huge reminder of how rich they were. Yet, their oldest son was bankrupt.
Being there was a strange experience for me. It wasn’t exactly nice. I didn’t enjoy the scrutinizing gaze every residence of that mansion gave me.
The servants looked at me with pity.
I met William’s mother and brother. Camila and Lucas Lewis. Camila looked at me with disgust and didn’t respond to my greetings. Lucas didn’t even spare me a glance.
Benjamin Lewis was more welcoming. He wasn’t enthusiastic about my arrival but he wasn’t hostile. He simply looked at my appearance and said: “good enough.”
I felt insulted. Nevertheless, there was nothing I could do about it. I remained silent.
Soon after, William arrived. He was a bit different than I expected but not too far off.
William was a very tall man. He had brown hair with strong facial features. He had a cold and gloomy aura around him. It made me shiver. His strong pitch black eyes carried a certain emotion that I couldn’t decipher. He stood tall with elegance. For some reason, he didn’t seem like the useless person people made him out to be. He was insanely handsome.
William barely spoke to me and it made me a bit anxious. His silence was nerve-wracking. We were to go to the Marriage Registry Office together. It was a marriage without celebration.
During the registration process, I felt the urge to run. I didn’t want to spend my life like this. It was too stifling. But I had no choice.
At the end of the registration, I numbly walked out with William.
Leaving the registry office, I still felt strange. It all felt unreal. I had really just married a total stranger. What a wonderful life I was living.
I didn’t even see signs of Daniel. He had completely forgotten about me. I wasn’t sure how to feel about that.
“Get in,” William said bluntly. He was expressionless as he opened the passenger door for me. He was across the road, holding the door open.
I sighed and began to make my way there. This was my new reality.
After all, this was merely a business transaction. I wondered what I would tell Euclid once he was out of the hospital.
As I was crossing the road, a screeching sound reached my ears. From my peripherals, I could make out a blue sports car racing towards me.
My mind went blank and I froze up.
Next, I felt my body take a fall, I wasn’t completely sure. There was a mixture of sounds. Screams, screeches, sirens, and finally, a loud thump.
All I knew was that my entire body hurt.
I was lying on the ground with strong but limp arms wrapped around my body.
There was a crushing weight on my body with a strange-smelling liquid seeping into my clothes.
It was blood. But it wasn’t mine. I felt pain but it didn’t seem serious enough for it to be blood. The voices droned out.
I opened my eyes to see the figure that was lying on top of me. And there he was.
My new husband was lying on top of me with his eyes closed. He looked strangely at peace. Perhaps it would’ve made a beautiful picture…
If his face and body weren’t bloodied and his legs weren’t facing the wrong direction.
