11:53pm
It was a few minutes before mid night when Fate got dropped at home by Julian Thorne and his driver. This was the latest that she had been out of her house since she moved into this town and started working at Valerius House.
“Miss Mason?” Mr Smith who was the security guard on duty called out with a questioning look on his face when she walked up to the entrance of the apartment.
She chuckled, he was as surprised as she was for how late she had been out and even coming back at this time? She did not blame him at all.
“Yes, Mr. Smith it is me."
“Wow, I am surprised to see you out this late.” He said smiling sheepishly.
“I am also surprised sincerely but as it is, I am calling it a day and I will be going on up to my apartment now.”
“Okay, Miss. do you have a good nights rest.”
“Ohh, I intend to. Goodnight and have a good night rest also, Mr Smith.”
With that she walked into the apartment building and then she headed into the elevator which led her slowly, creakily but surely to her apartment room.
Once inside the safety of her room, Fate leaned against the closed door and slid to the floor of the room.
“Me and You. Shopping and finalizing the deal. Tomorrow. 8am.”
Those were Mr. Thorne’s last words after dropping Fate off in front of her apartment building.
“What is happening?”
She asked quietly her question directed at no one in particular as the excitement of everything that was going on slowly enveloped her.
One moment she wanted the world to swallow her the next she was about to start work for one of the major forces in Fashion.
She wished she could share this with someone. Diane might have been such the best sport but since she was an employee for Valerius House, it was not going to be smart to get her involved in such a sensitive situation.
Getting up from the floor, Fate began to undress with one thing on her mind. The next morning.
After showering and changing into her pajamas. She made a mental note to call her mother first thing the next morning.
Before her outing, she would get some Goodluck from her mother. For now, she needed some good luck to be able to sleep immediately.
**********
“Yeah! Get off the bus loser!”
Someone yelled while the others laughed or snickered at Fate as she walked down from the school bus.
It had become a routine nightmare every time she was going home. Fate ignored them but she winced as she was reminded of the bullying she had endured earlier.
Ignoring them was going to be hard she thought wincing after every step that she took.
As the bus drove past her street, Fate looked at the long path ahead. It was flanked by trees and lights and it led to a foot gate on the large wall that separated them.
She could tell her parents about it but what would they do? They were indeed blessed to have the opportunity they had.
After routine “check” with the border guards, Fate walked through the foot gate that led to the community where Fate really belonged to, she could see her home.
She felt relief.
There was a clear classification; the lowly farm workers and the great working elite.
After walking past the farmlands, she got closer to the house, she practiced the best way to mask any pain she felt and hide any scars on her body, her parents did not have to see her hurting.
Before she got to the door, she heard a ping sound coming from her school bag.
Was that what she thought it was? Her phone? But no one ever called.
Before she could think okay anything, her mother stepped out of the front door; the setting sun illuminating the big smile on her face.
“How’s my Fate?”
Her mother said opening her arms.
“I’m okay, mum.” Fate replied returning the smile, and going in for a hug. “How about you? How are you?”
“I’m doing just fine. I just finished making your favorite dish and so I got excited to see that you came home right on time.”
“Really?” Fate said eyes widening in excitement.
“Yes baby.”
“Ohh mama, how did you know I needed this!” Hugging her mother tightly.
“That is because everything happens as Fate will have it!”
Her mother said as they both walked into the house, closing the door behind them.
“Only as Fate will have it!” Fate repeated said, cementing the words that had become a family litany now.
“Will dad be back soon? I miss him.”
“He actually said he will be back earlier than normal today.
So why don’t you to go and take a shower who knows when you come down, he might be back by then.”
“Okay, ma.” Fate said running ahead of her mother past the living room and towards her room.
“I’ll be back in a jiffy!”
The sound of Fate’s alarm clock ringing seemed to break the 4th wall and next thing Fate was awake in her attic apartment room.
Reaching out for the alarm clock, she shut it off before sitting up in her bed quietly for a few minutes as she tried to register her dream and awake fully.
She had not dreamed of her childhood in a very long time, why was she doing so now and why was she feeling as emotionally affected as she was?
She wished she had seen her father in the dream but she had woken up before getting to see him at all. She missed him so much. Fate broke down and cried silently in the dark of her room, letting her emotions run high as she allowed the tears to also relieve her.
“What a dream.”
